Of all the outlandish get-ups at this year's Met 祝祭 ― the fashion 産業's 同等（の） of the Oscars ― perhaps the most emblematic of how far up its own fundament it has disappeared was the sight of supermodel Cara Delevingne turning up topless save for a couple of nipple-saucers and a lick of gold 団体／死体 paint.

No 疑問 ーするつもりであるd to make her look 'edgy', it felt nothing to do with fashion or style per se, but just another desperate 試みる／企てる to stand out from the （人が）群がる.

And there were plenty more.

Kylie Jenner in a disastrously misconceived 'wedding gown', worn with backwards-直面するing baseball cap and 隠す; Katy Perry in what looked like a 衣装 あわてて 組み立てる／集結するd from the 残りの人，物d 貯蔵所 in John 吊りくさび haberdashery; the model Winnie Harlow dressed as a 5 ft snowflake.

But the prize for shameless attention-捜し出すing goes, as ever, to Kim Kardashian, in Marilyn Monroe's famous 床に打ち倒す-length, flesh-coloured sequin dress, the one she wore to sing happy birthday to 大統領 John F. Kennedy in 1962.

On Monroe, the dress shimmered with 性の prom ise, 明らかにする／漏らすing ― as one commentator put it at the time ― far more than it 隠すd; on Kardashian it was distinctly underwhelming, the 肉親，親類d of thing you might find for £79.99 in TK Maxx's occasion-wear section.

And there's a 推論する／理由 for that. Monroe was a 本物の talent ― a true 星／主役にする from the real golden 時代 of Hollywood.

Kardashian, by contrast, is a surgically 高めるd, poundshop replica, a 立方（体）の zirconia to Monroe's diamond. Marilyn brought that dress to life because she was so authentic; Kardashian killed it because she's nothing but a 偽の.

And that's the problem with modern celebrity culture, and w hy events such as the Met Ball and the Oscars have all but lost their meaning.

Where once they 供給するd a tantalising glimpse of a rarefied world, a chance to see さもなければ elusive 星／主役にするs in the flesh, in today's social マスコミ age they're just another marketing 適切な時期.

The whole 通貨 of fame has become so 平価を切り下げるd, and the Met 祝祭 is part of that. Touted as the most 排除的 soiree on the 惑星, in fact, it's just all the usual 嫌疑者，容疑者／疑うs competing for attention.

And, like all over-特権d 泡s, the 大多数 of the 関係者s have almost 無 self-認識／意識性 or 関係 with reality, no sense of how ridiculous they look, or how 侮辱ing their extravagance can seem.

The Oscars at least celebrate something creative.

But the Met Ball, brainchild of American Vogue editor Anna Wintour, is nothing more than a meaningless 演習 in let-them-eat-cakeism.

Its 単独の 目的 appears to be showing off for the sake of it, revelling in extravagance, laughing in the 直面する of the 残り／休憩（する） of the world. One that, in these very challenging times ― when インフレーション and the cost of living are 急に上がるing across the globe, and a world war is on the 瀬戸際 of breaking out ― smacks of トン-deaf arrogance.

Perhaps if the dresses were elegant, breathtaking examples of craftsmanship, a welcome sunburst of glamour in a grey world, we could 許す the lavish self-indulgence of this tacky 事件／事情／状勢.

But who could かもしれない find this parade of overpriced, unimpressive 創造s remotely 奮起させるing? There is a difference between 供給するing a bit of much-needed light 救済 and 単に 押すing your 特権 負かす／撃墜する everyone's throat.

And this 貧困の bunch of half-dressed attention-探検者s is the last thing the world needs.

A daytime TV 演劇?

I'm やめる relieved the 総理大臣 didn't すぐに know which 'Lorraine' Susanna Reid was referring to in her interview with him yesterday morning.

Brilliant as Lorraine (Kelly, for it was she) is, I would much prefer a PM who isn't intimately familiar with the daytime TV schedules.

Bet all his civil servants working from home know who she is, though: what else are you going to watch when you're puffing along on your Peloton during office hours?

I can't say I 非難する Anne Robinson for 屈服するing out of Countdown. I'm sure Rachel Riley is lovely, but she's awfully perky.

It must be exhausting 株ing a show with her. Still, if Channel 4 needs a grumpy old 捕らえる、獲得する to 取って代わる the Queen of Mean...

HRT and the betrayal of women

There's no mystery to the 不足 of HRT. As Mariella Frostrup pointed out on my Mail+ podcast last week, the number of women taking hormone 交替／補充 therapy over the past few years has 二塁打d.

That's in large part thanks to the overturning of two 欠陥d 熟考する／考慮するs from the 早期に Noughties linking HRT with an elevated 危険 of breast 癌, heart attack and 一打／打撃. But we're still not やめる there.
