STEPHEN GLOVER: He showed guts in 直面するing 負かす/撃墜する Nicola Sturgeon, but backtracked on fracking - and he still won't 削減(する) 税金s. So when will the REAL Rishi Sunak stand up?
How I 元気づけるd when Rishi Sunak 召喚するd the courage to tell Nicola Sturgeon to think again about her ill-裁判官d Gender 承認 改革(する) 法案.
The Scottish 国家主義者 First 大臣 and her 同盟(する)s evidently believe that they are at liberty to promulgate whatever 法律s they like north of the 国境 as though Scotland were an 独立した・無所属 fiefdom. Such are the 危険,危なくするs of devolution.
This is the first time since devolution began its lethal work of prising apart the 部隊d Kingdom that the 政府 in Westminster has dared to invoke the Scotland 行為/法令/行動する to challenge idiotic 法律制定 brewed in Edinburgh.
The 法案 makes it easier for putative transgender people to 得る 公式の/役人 gender 承認 証明書s, 含むing by 減ずるing waiting times, 除去するing the need for a 医療の diagnosis and bringing 負かす/撃墜する the 最小限 age from 18 to 16.
Mr Sunak is not going to be (刑事)被告 by most Scottish people of 干渉 in their 事件/事情/状勢s for the simple 推論する/理由 that the 大多数 of them probably agree with his 保留(地)/予約s about the 法案
But the 政府 argues that the 法律制定 飛行機で行くs in the 直面する of equality 法律s that 適用する to the whole of the 部隊d Kingdom. The 最高裁判所 will have to 支配する who is 訂正する ― Westminster or Edinburgh.
As I say, my 即座の and 圧倒的な 返答 was: Good for Rishi! にもかかわらず the (人命などを)奪う,主張するs of his critics in the Tory Party that he often blows with the 勝つ/広く一帯に広がるing 勝利,勝つd, here he was 論証するing 原則, and not shirking a fight.
And yet, within a day of his making a stand, the 政府 発表するd that it will 延長する a 禁止(する) on ‘転換 therapy’ in England and むちの跡s to 含む those who wish to change their gender. This 逆転するs a 政策 可決する・採択するd by Boris Johnson.
Almost no one 疑問s that 転換 therapy 適用するd to children who say they are gay is coercive, 同様に as 効果のない/無能な, and should be proscribed by the 政府.
But many sensible people think the 政府’s planned 法案 could ensnare parents who 簡単に want to discuss with their children their 願望(する) to change gender.
The equalities 大臣, Kemi Badenoch, 報道によれば believes that it is feasible to でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れる 法律制定 which won’t 妨げる parents and teachers from pointing out to children the irreversible consequences of taking 確かな 麻薬s or を受けるing 外科.

The Scottish 国家主義者 First 大臣 and her 同盟(する)s evidently believe that they are at liberty to promulgate whatever 法律s they like north of the 国境 as though Scotland were an 独立した・無所属 fiefdom. Such are the 危険,危なくするs of devolution
But parents who 単に want to discuss the 問題/発行する with their children in a 静める way may be 脅すd of 存在 代表するd by 選挙運動者s as intrusive いじめ(る)s, and could 落ちる foul of the 法律, notwithstanding the 政府’s 保証/確信s.
Wouldn’t it be far better to leave things as they are? Very few children who are considering changing sex are 支配するd to 転換 therapy. The traffic seems to be almost 完全に in the opposite direction, with doctors and others いつかs pressurising children to go ahead without the consequences 存在 適切に 重さを計るd.
So I am mystified that, while having the guts to …に反対する Nicola Sturgeon ― 効果的に supporting women who don’t want their ‘安全な spaces’ 侵略するd by transgender people who 宣言する themselves to be women ― Rishi Sunak should also 危険 干渉するing in the 権利s and 義務s of parents.
A true Tory would not do so. A true Tory has 約束 in the ability of most parents, and children who may be troubled, to discuss these 問題/発行するs in their own way without the 明言する/公表する poking its nose into their 事件/事情/状勢s.
Needless to say, the illiberal Scots Nats do things 異なって. In 2020 they passed a hate 罪,犯罪s 法案, which criminalised speech みなすd 有能な of ‘stirring up 憎悪’ against groups of people with ‘保護するd 特徴’.
Such speech 含むs conversations over the privacy of the kitchen (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する. People could fa ce 起訴 for 割れ目ing the wrong joke about 無能にするd or trans 問題/発行するs, or conceivably even 存在 rude about the egregious Nicola Sturgeon.
The Hate 罪,犯罪 and Public Order (Scotland) 法案 is on ice at the moment, even though it has received 王室の Assent, because police and the 司法の north of the 国境 can’t work out how to 適用する it. Here is another piece of crass 法律制定 which Westminster should have had the courage to 拒否権, but didn’t.
支援する to Rishi, and the 明らかな contradiction between his standing up to Sturgeon’s Gender 承認 改革(する) 法案 and his embracing 法律制定 which could 干渉する with the 権利s of parents to discuss 問題/発行するs with their children.
Even though I 賞賛するd the PM on the first count, it occurs to me that he wasn’t taking a 抱擁する political 危険 since, によれば opinion 投票s, more Scots …に反対する 面s of Sturgeon’s 法案 than support them.
Mr Sunak is not going to be (刑事)被告 by most Scottish people of 干渉 in their 事件/事情/状勢s for the simple 推論する/理由 that the 大多数 of them probably agree with his 保留(地)/予約s about the 法案.
Am I 存在 不公平な to Rishi? Maybe a bit. Let’s give him the 利益 of the 疑問, and congratulate him for taking the 権利 course even if he wasn’t 危険ing a tremendous 量 by doing so.
Yet there undoubtedly remains a problem. Our 総理大臣 is an enigma. His critics say that he is as wet as a newly landed trout, and 事実上 a 社会主義者. His defenders say, no, he’s admittedly a pragmatist, but economically he is 現実に ‘乾燥した,日照りの’, and a 強健な Tory in all sorts of ways.
Which is it? We can make a 簡潔な/要約する スピードを出す/記録につける. On the 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 of wetness and zigzagging, there was his abandonment of fracking as soon as he became 総理大臣, にもかかわらず his 是認 of it during the Tory leadership (選挙などの)運動をする last summer, as long as it enjoyed 地元の support.
So far as 課税 is 関心d, there almost certainly won’t be any 削減(する)s in Jeremy 追跡(する)’s spring 予算. From this April, this country will have the highest ever 税金s in 平時(の), and the longer this continues to be the 事例/患者, the more difficult it will be for Mr Sunak to defend his Tory 信任状.
In 主張するing on 最小限 service levels in parts of the public 部門, the PM has done better, though the 法律を制定する 過程 may take so long that the 現在の wave of strikes will have finished by the time a new 法案 is passed. It should have been done earlier.
The unelected Lords will …に反対する the 法案, as they will the 計画(する) to 修正する, 廃止する and 取って代わる some 4,000 pieces of EU 法律 that were 保持するd on the 法令 調書をとる/予約する after Brexit. Some Tories joined 労働 in harrying the 政府 over its 提案s during a ありふれたs 審議 yesterday.
Just as it is difficult to reconcile the 総理大臣 who …に反対するd Sturgeon with the man who 計画(する)s to 適用する a 禁止(する) on 転換 therapy in transgender 事例/患者s, so it’s hard to discern much consistency in Mr Sunak’s approach. いつかs he 削減(する)s and runs, occasionally he tacks, and once in a while he chooses to fight.
To be fair, his ambiguity over transgender 問題/発行するs is dwarfed by the 混乱 of 労働. Its leader, Sir Keir Starmer, has 表明するd 保留(地)/予約s about 面s of Nicola Sturgeon’s 法案, but yesterday …に反対するd the 政府 封鎖するing it.
一方/合間, Rosie Duffield, a feminist backbench 労働 MP, has (刑事)被告 Sir Keir of ignoring her after she was jeered by party 同僚s in the ありふれたs for criticising the 法案.
In more ways than one, 労働 is 攻撃を受けやすい. The truth is that we could do with いっそう少なく of the 管理の Rishi Sunak, and much more of the 政治家,政治屋 who gives 調印するs of having some solid Tory beliefs. Will th e real 総理大臣 ever stand up to be counted?
