There is something about Gemma Collins's use ― or misuse, as some have categorised it ― of the word 'hermaphrodite' that makes me warm to this self-styled Essex 'Del-Girl'.

In a frank and at times rather heart-breaking episode of the Daily Mail's Everything I Know About Me podcast, the reality TV 星／主役にする 会談 about a time in her 早期に 20s when she fell 妊娠している by her stockbroker boyfriend.

She 述べるs how he was いっそう少なく than thrilled at the news. (She later 設立する out he was having an 事件／事情／状勢 with a hairdresser called Clare, even though she and this man were living together.)

'I went to the doctor's ― I can remember going on my own '原因（となる） he just wasn't about,' she explains. 'They said to me, 'Oh, your baby could be, from looking at it…' Is it called a thalidomide? No ― a hermaphrodite, a hermaphrodite ― I mean, you can imagine, I didn't know what the word was, I had to look it up.

'I'd never been taught about hermaphrodites ― didn't know what they were, didn't know they 存在するd!'

Gemma Collins's success and longevity has been a topic of 審議 ever since, in 2011, she burst の上に our TV 審査するs in the second 一連の ITV's The Only Way Is Essex (Towie)

The doctors advised her to have a termination, and she went ahead, 解任するing how after the 操作／手術 her boyfriend just sat watching the TV series 24. 'I can remember thinking, I've just had an abortion, you're downstairs watching 24, you 絶対の piece of sh**'.

必然的に critics have 焦点（を合わせる）d on her use of the word 'hermaphrodite', pointing out, somewhat sanctimoniously, that the 受託するd 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語 is 'intersex'.

No 疑問 some will also question her 決定／判定勝ち（する） to have a termination altogether (she has since had several more), and others still may 選ぶ up on her misuse of the 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語 'thalidomide'.

Indeed, that entire passage is so unconsciously un-woke it's a 奇蹟 she hasn't already been carted off by the PC police.

But if you take the time to listen to her talking, it's （疑いを）晴らす that 非，不，無 of what she says is ーするつもりであるd to 感情を害する／違反する. It is 簡単に her account of events as she remembers them, warts and all. It may be shocking in parts, and 欠如（する）ing in the 肉親，親類d of finesse of self-検閲 that we are used to from those in the public 注目する，もくろむ ―but it is also authentic and relatable in a way that is ますます rare these days.

Collins's success and longevity in the 商売／仕事 has been a topic of 審議 ever since, in 2011, she burst の上に our TV 審査するs in the second 一連の ITV's The Only Way Is Essex (Towie).

But I don't find her 人気 that surprising at all. Yes, she's coarse, yes she's mouthy, yes she gets her thalidomides mixed up with her hermaphrodites. But at the end of the day she has something that so many of her 悪賢い, size 8, 最高の-primped 相当するものs don't have: she is real.

In a world of endless filters, where people are for ever trying to be someone they're not, 脅すd of 説 what they think for 恐れる of 存在 characterised as bigots, her rawness feels culturally 破壊分子, 解放するing even.

Her 無（不）能 and 不本意 to disguise the いっそう少なく salubrious 面s of her personality （判決などを）下すs her 突然に attractive as a person, even though outwardly she 欠如（する）s many of the 受託するd せいにするs.

She is greedy, ambitious, ignorant, 攻撃を受けやすい ― and she doesn't try to hide any of it. She has a level of self-knowledge that is both refreshing and 説得力のある.

She reminds me, in a way, of fellow reality TV 星／主役にする Jade Goody. Another one who was reviled for her 欠如（する） of refinement, who was ridiculed for her 明らかな ignorance ― appearing on Big Brother in 2002, she thought Cambridge was in London, and when someone pointed out it was in East Anglia, she assumed that was somewhere outside t he UK, and referred to it as 'East Angular'.?

When Jade ran the London マラソン, she 崩壊（する）d, later 自白するing that she didn't 'really understand miles'.

Collins, 43, is a more sophisticated 見解／翻訳／版 of Goody (who tragically died 老年の 27 from cervical 癌 in 2009) ― but they are essentially 削減（する） from the same cloth.

They are both women who have transcended their perceived position in life, who have confounded society's perceptions of what they せねばならない be, who have made something of themselves while staying true to who they are.

They are also the 肉親，親類d of women who attract a lot of misogynistic 批評, 正確に because they fail to 従う with the first 支配する of 存在 女性（の） in a patriarchal society, which is to know their place. There's an earthiness there, a 欠如（する） of physical shame which runs 反対する to what so many of us are taught to feel about our 団体／死体s, which, while at times やめる shocking, is also admirable.

W 女／おっせかい屋 I think of someone like Collins, with her raw honesty and unbridled lust for the finer things in life, I am reminded of that wonderful literary 創造, Chaucer's the Wife of Bath.?

Strong, 独立した・無所属, raunchy, outrageous, voracious ― the Wife and Collins 株 many 類似の 質s. And just as the Wife shocks and excites her fellow 巡礼者s in equal 手段, so Collins does the same to modern audiences.

Collins even opened up on Towie about her 追求（する），探索（する） for a 'designer vagina', an echo of the Wife's gleeful 言及／関連 to her 'Bele chose'. Six centuries may separate the two, but that bold 女性（の） spirit remains.

And, like the Wife, no 事柄 how outrageous Collins may be, what comes across most of all in this podcast is her 本物の warmth and 親切. She's got a tongue on her and she doesn't 苦しむ fools 喜んで (特に when it comes to that ex-boyfriend and his hairdresser girlfriend, and some of her former 同僚s on Towie), but she is never mean for the sake of it.

Above all, she owns her failings and 収容する／認めるs to her cock-ups.

She never feels sorry for herself, either, like so many self-indulgent celebrities do these days ― ev en though she might have good 推論する／理由 to. Even when talking about her termination, she manages to find some humour in the 不明瞭.

'I always get the giggles when something's bad,' she says.

That approach 延長するs to other things, too: she has no time for snowflakery. One of my favourite moments is when she's talking about how important her work ethic is to her, and how she can't understand why people would prefer to stay at home than get a 職業.

'We are living in a society today where people don't want to work. It's so bizarre,' she says. '削減（する） all the 利益. There should be a lot more people out there working. Don't even get me started on that.

'Since the pandemic people are 感情を害する／違反するd if they've got to go into the office? Get a 支配する! This is life. Go to work. Get up if you're able-団体／死体d, and go and get a 職業.' I couldn't agree more.
