STEPHEN POLLARD: We aren't in the 1950s. And bringing 支援する 国家の Service is not going to magically take us 支援する there
For many of its 支持者s, the idea harks 支援する to an idealised 1950s ? those 愛国的な halcyon days when you could leave your 前線 door 打ち明けるd, the police cycled around nabbing petty 犯罪のs and old maids drank warm beer.
But we aren’t in the 1950s. And bringing 支援する 国家の Service is not going to magically take us 支援する there.
The problems young people 直面する today are the same problems we all 直面する ? 罪，犯罪, 麻薬s, the economy, family 決裂／故障 and so on. 取り組む those, and you 取り組む the 問題／発行する of young people who feel they have no 目的.
A 国家の volunteering 計画／陰謀 is certainly a sensible idea. And we have one ? the 国家の 国民 Service, 始める，決める up by Lord Cameron in 2010. In 2019 its 予算 was £158.6million. Today it’s £50.3million, 削除するd by the same Rishi Sunak who is now 説 he will spend £2.5billion on a compulsory 計画／陰謀.
支持者s of Mr Sunak’s 計画／陰謀 特記する／引用する イスラエル and some Nordic countries where there are forms of 国家の Service. But we are nothing like イスラエル. As the 現在の 軍の 操作／手術 in Gaza shows, イスラエル is a country which 直面するs a 永久の existential and テロリスト 脅し and where 国家の 安全 is the most important 問題／発行する by a mile. No other 問題／発行する comes の近くに.

And army service in a tiny country like イスラエル is not really about building character or 国家の 身元 ? those are by-製品s. Army service is the only way to 支える its defence ? and it carries on long into adulthood.
The likes of Norway and Finland are not worthwhile comparisons either. Nordic countries have a very different approach to 明言する／公表する 支配（する）／統制する. Their 国民s 受託する 明言する／公表する diktats in so many areas, where we Britons 見解（をとる） the 明言する／公表する with scepticism.
In that vein, one can only imagine what will happen when the first hapless army 新採用する breaks a 脚 on an 強襲，強姦 course. It will be a lawyers’ 大当り. I can already see the class 活動／戦闘 控訴 ぼんやり現れるing.
Joining the 武装した 軍隊s will not be compulsory under Mr Sunak’s 計画（する）. But によれば the 総理大臣, it will be 義務的な for young people to give up one 週末 a month for volunteering (though the 概念 of ‘compulsory volunteering’ is a little puzzling).
I am left wondering what it is about the young that so many people in 力／強力にする appear to dislike? It was under this 政府, don’t forget, that so many young people were 軍隊d to 行方不明になる school and stay 閉じ込める／刑務所d up at home during lockdown ーするために 保護する the 年輩の.
Now the 計画（する） is to tell them they have too many 解放する／自由な 週末s and they need to do what the 政府 tells them with their spare time.
As one mother of an 18-year-old 刑務所，拘置所 officer 地位，任命するd on social マスコミ yesterday: ‘It’s a 堅い 職業, and 含むs working every other 週末 and some nights. Rishi Sunak thinks she should also give up one of her remaining 解放する／自由な 週末s each month to “volunteer”?’
Mr Sunak’s bombshell 計画（する） to bring 支援する 国家の Service is a dismal misfire. It will do little to shore up our underfunded 武装した 軍隊s and it won’t paper over the 割れ目s in our fractured society.
