DANIEL HANNAN: Here's what Starmer must do now to see off America's 関税 脅し - and help our economy 急に上がる

The 長,指導者 犠牲者s of Donald Trump's new 関税s will be Americans. The 大統領's 25 per cent 徴収する on all 輸入するd cars, to sit と一緒に those on steel and aluminium, will 必然的に result in price rises.

Most 明白に, 輸入するd cars will become more expensive. But so will American 乗り物s as their 製造業者s will no longer need to worry about 競争.

The sheer self-害(を与える)ing folly of this 政策 should be obvious ? and you don't have to take my word for it. One of Trump's rather more distinguished 前任者s, Ronald Reagan, put it succinctly in his 週刊誌 無線で通信する 演説(する)/住所 to the nation in 1985.

'Instead of 保護貿易主義, we should call it "destructionism",' said the 広大な/多数の/重要な 税金-cutting 共和国の/共和党の. 'Homegrown 産業s start relying on 政府 保護 in the form of high 関税s. They stop competing and stop making the innovative 管理/経営 and 科学技術の changes they need to 後継する in world markets.'

To make 事柄s worse, as prices rise in showrooms, American 消費者s will have いっそう少なく to spend on other things, 害(を与える)ing the whole economy.

Ironically, given his 現在の 役割 as Trump's 長,指導者 cheerleader, Elon Musk explained it beautifully when he was interviewed by the American podcaster Joe Rogan の直前に the 大統領's 就任(式)/開始.

It was, 解任するd the co-創立者 of Tesla, only 競争 from Germany and Japan that had 救助(する)d US 自動車 companies from their torpor in the 1970s. 直面するd with superior models from abroad, they were 軍隊d to up their game.

The worst possible 返答 to Trump's 行為/法令/行動する of 経済的な masochism would be to replicate it ourselves. If someone chops off his finger, you don't 報復する by lopping off one of your own.

Unfortunately, politics and 経済的なs are two different beasts. Although 自由貿易 is one of the few ideas which every mainstream 経済学者 supports, 合理的な/理性的な arguments count for little when a country feels disrespected.

Canada is in the middle of an 選挙運動. I have no 疑問 that the leaders of both the 保守的な and 自由主義の parties there understand that 関税s will impoverish Canadians, but they can't afford to look weak in the 直面する of Trump's 侵略.

So they will 結局最後にはーなる 課すing a harmful 政策 ? tit-for-tat 関税s on American cars ? rather than 推論する/理由 with 投票者s whose 血 is up.

Something 類似の, I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う, will happen in the EU, which 報復するd against Trump's 決定/判定勝ち(する) to 課す steel and aluminium 関税s in February by introducing its own, to the detriment of its construction 労働者s, car 製造業者s, 電気の 器具-製造者s and 鉄道s.

So far, to his credit, Keir Starmer has 避けるd that mistake. Instead of going for cheap 賞賛 by 課すing 関税s of his own, which would have put up prices for British 商売/仕事s and British 労働者s, he 演習d 警告を与える.

Rather than begin a self-mutilating escalation, we need to get the 徴収するs 解除するd. The way to do that is to start the 貿易(する) 会談 that Trump 提案するd when he met Starmer in the Oval Office a month ago.

Although Trump's 関税s will おもに 傷つける American 消費者s, they will also 損失 British car 製造業者s. The US accounts for 18 per cent of our car 輸出(する)s by 容積/容量 and 27 per cent by value (our transatlantic cousins are drawn to our pricier モーターs: Jaguars; Aston ツバメs; Bentleys, and so on).

Plainly, it is in the 利益/興味 of both countries to 解除する those 制限s. How to do it? By 確実にするing that all 関税s are 一時停止するd while our 貿易(する) 会談 get under way.

In 交流, Britain should 申し込む/申し出, while 会談 proceed, to 一時停止する the idiotic 10 per cent 関税 on US cars that we 相続するd from the EU ? or, at the very least, to 削減(する) it to the US 率 of 2.5 per cent.

The 交渉s themselves should be both 緊急の and ambitious. British 保護貿易論者s and Europhile nostalgists have somehow 納得させるd themselves that the 会談 are all about chlorinated chicken and hormone-扱う/治療するd beef.

In fact, there is no prospect of any 重要な 容積/容量s of US chicken reaching our markets. The 経済的なs just don't work. In any 事例/患者, Washington is not asking us to alter our food safety 支配するs. What it wants ? very reasonably ? is to be 許すd to sell its goods here when they 従う with our 法律s.

Since we are nowhere 近づく self-十分なこと in beef, there can be no serious argument against 許すing US 輸入するs, when they come without growth hormones, to compete with those from Ireland and フラン.

Food, though the most emotive part of any 貿易(する) 会談, is a ごくわずかの part of our 貿易(する). The real 伸び(る)s for our two countries are in 除去するing 関税s on 製造(する)d goods, in the 相互の 承認 of professional 信任状, and in 財政上の services, tech, AI, 製薬のs and defence 調達.

The US is not just our largest market ? it is larger than our second, third and fourt h-largest markets (Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands) 連合させるd.

A lot of the work has already been done. By the end of Trump's first 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語, nearly two thirds of the US-UK 貿易(する) 一時期/支部s were at or の近くに to 完成. We should get on and 結論する the 取引,協定 before Trump's 中間選挙s at the end of next year.

If Starmer can get a 取引,協定 over the line, he will see both the British economy and his personal ratings 急に上がる. And you know what? He will deserve it.
