Now 努力する/競う to 確実にする 司法(官) is fully served?

Hon Mr JUSTICE TREACY

信頼できる: The Mail congratulates Mr 司法(官) Treacy for his understanding of how this 事例/患者 has 侵入するd the nation's 良心

Many, 含むing this paper, would argue that 最小限 刑務所,拘置所 条件 of 14 and 15 years are not nearly 罰 enough for any 殺人 ? let alone a 罪,犯罪 as ‘terrible and evil’ as the 人種差別主義者 殺人,大当り of Stephen Lawrence.

But nobody can 公正に/かなり 非難する Mr 司法(官) Treacy for the 関税s he 手渡すd 負かす/撃墜する to Gary Dobson and David Norris. He was constrained by the 法律 as laid 負かす/撃墜する by 議会 and, had they been adults when they committed the 殺人, he would have given them at least 30 years.

Indeed, the Mail congratulates the 裁判官, not only on going as far as the 宣告,判決ing 支配するs 許す, but on his 徹底的な しっかり掴む of the way in which this 事例/患者 has shaken the nation’s 良心 and roused its かわき for 司法(官).

As he spelt out yesterday, however, that かわき is not 満足させるd yet.
For although this has been a glorious week for 司法(官), only two of Stephen’s 殺し屋s have so far been held to account for their 罪,犯罪. Three other 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うs 指名するd by the Mail nearly 15 years ago remain at liberty, while a fourth may also have been 伴う/関わるd.

Indeed, we still don’t know which ギャング(団) member (打撃,刑罰などを)与えるd the 致命的な 負傷させる.
Since Tuesday’s 判決s, 政治家,政治屋s and police have been eager to 保証する us that the 調査 will go on.

Says Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe: ‘The other people 伴う/関わるd in the 殺人 of Stephen Lawrence should not 残り/休憩(する) easily in their beds.’

He must 努力する/競う for as long as it takes to 確実にする these are not empty words.

This paper does not underestimate the difficulty of 明らかにするing reliable new 証拠 relating to a 罪,犯罪 committed nearly 19 years ago. But then for more than a 10年間, few believed that anybody would be brought to 司法(官) at all.

This week, the police 証明するd triumphantly what they can 達成する with enough 焦点(を合わせる) and 決意.

They must go on 証明するing it, until all Stephen’s 殺し屋s are behi nd 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業s.

A deadly danger

Let nobody be under any illusion about the (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限 on 補助装置d Dying, 議長,司会を務めるd by former Lord (ドイツなどの)首相/(大学の)学長, Charles Falconer.

にもかかわらず its 公式の/役人-looking 指名する, this is not a public 団体/死体. Nor is it as 独立した・無所属 or 客観的な as it sounds.

Indeed, it is 基金d by author Sir Terry Pratchett, an Alzheimer’s 苦しんでいる人, and 実業家 Bernard 吊りくさび, both 主要な 支持者s of 補助装置d 自殺.

As for Lord Falconer, who 選ぶd its other ten members, he 本人自身で led an 試みる/企てる to bring in an 補助装置d dying 法案 in the Lords three years ago.

So before the (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限 even began its 審議s, it was 高度に likely to favour bringing in a 法律 that would 許す doctors to help kill their 患者s.

One ちらりと見ること at its 報告(する)/憶測, however, should 警告する how fraught with difficulty and danger any such 法律制定 would be.

Public support: Sir Terry Pratchett, who believes in people with dementia being euthanised when they ask for it, is the Commission's banker

疑わしい: The (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限 on 補助装置d Dying is led by Lord Falconer and part 基金d by Sir Terry Pratchett - both known 支持者s of 安楽死

Under its 冷気/寒がらせるing 推薦s, a 患者 would be する権利を与えるd to 援助 in committing 自殺 if two GPs certified that he or she had いっそう少なく than a year to live.

As with a 雇う 購入(する) 協定, there would then be a two-week ‘冷静な/正味のing off’ period, before the doctor 定める/命ずるd the 毒(薬) (or ‘医薬’, as the (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限 euphemistically calls it).

But aren’t doctors often wildly wrong about life 見込み? And why should a life be thought いっそう少なく sacred because it is 推定する/予想するd to end 自然に within a year?

Yes, there will be agonising 事例/患者s in which the 当局 should show mercy. But that happens now.

If 補助装置ing 自殺 is made 合法的な, isn’t the danger that it will become 決まりきった仕事?

Dignity in Dying (以前は the Voluntary 安楽死 Society) hopes the 報告(する)/憶測 will ‘form the 創立/基礎 for 法律を制定する change’. This paper prays that it won’t.
