This is no time for schadenfreude: Germany’s car 危機 and 悪意のある new 国家主義 is a perfect 嵐/襲撃する and it terrifies me says 最高の,を越す Oxford academic

If a week is a long time in politics, a month is an 時代. The 津波 of 犯罪の 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s and class-活動/戦闘 控訴s now 押し寄せる/沼地ing Volkswagen was hardly on the horizon this time last week.

But think 支援する to the end of August. Then (ドイツなどの)首相/(大学の)学長 Angela Merkel bestrode the EU like a colossus and was 尊敬(する)・点d around the world. Seventy years after Hitler, Merkel seemed to have solved what Henry Kissinger called Germany’s age-old problem ? ‘Too big for Europe, too small for the world’.

A few weeks ago, Germany’s (ドイツなどの)首相/(大学の)学長 since 2005 seemed to have 達成するd the leadership of Europe by 同意, which her 前任者s had tried to 得る,とらえる by 軍隊. Her economy was the world’s number one 輸出業者. Even her footballers were world 支持する/優勝者s.

At home, Merkel had 押し進めるd through painful 改革(する)s to re-energise German 産業 to get on 最高の,を越す of the world. Abroad she had taken the EU by the scruff of the neck and sorted out the euro 危機, but also 行為/法令/行動するd as Europe’s spokesperson in the 危機 with Putin’s Russia over ウクライナ共和国.

Merkel’s finest hour (機の)カム a month ago when she 布告するd that her 見解/翻訳/版 of Germany had an open door to 難民s from around the world. Hitler’s Germany was truly dead and buried. Merkel’s ‘come-one, come-all’ 招待 was ーするつもりであるd to shame the 残り/休憩(する) of us into に引き続いて the New Germany’s foreigner-friendly lead.

But Merkel has had no time to bask in her glory. For a start, no 準備s had 現実に been made to house so many newcomers. Germany has even had to 輸入する テントs from America.

But nothing matched the sudden shock to Germany’s 輸出(する)-led economy, which had ridden out the world 経済的な 危機, when it was 攻撃する,衝突する by one of its own making. Eleven million VW cars now seemed ‘jerry-built’ junk.

Until last week it was ありふれた to hear that the miraculous にわか景気 years of the ‘Wirtschaftswunder’ in 戦後の West Germany were repeating themselves in Merkel’s 部隊d Germany. Then (機の)カム VW’s ‘Wirtschafts-失敗’.

Caught 現行犯で fiddling the 環境の 実験(する)s leaves Germany’s biggest 輸出業者 teetering on the brink of 財政上の 災害.

But this is no time for schadenfreude. These dr amatic and unsettling 開発s in Germany have the makings of a perfect 嵐/襲撃する that terrifies me.

After 10年間s of 僕主主義 in a 地位,任命する-Hitler Germany, these 成分s of 集まり 移民/移住 and the car 産業 スキャンダル 脅す to 急落(する),激減(する) the country into an 経済的な and 失業 危機.

There is an alarming 可能性のある for destabilising Germany and fostering the rise in dangerous 国家主義 that 脅すs to 土台を崩す the ‘Good Germany’ that has been built up in the 70 years since 1945.

In reality, hard times have been creeping up on the German economy before VW’s self-(打撃,刑罰などを)与えるd 負傷させるs. But they broke into the open at the moment Merkel was 追加するing hundreds of thousands to Germany’s expensive 福利事業 法案.

Merkel’s finest hour (機の)カム a month ago when she 布告するd that her 見解/翻訳/版 of Germany had an open door to 難民s from around the world

As often is th e 事例/患者 in 悲劇, Merkel’s problems today 茎・取り除く from her past success. With her 大蔵大臣, Wolfgang Sch?uble, she 課すd 緊縮 throughout the eurozone.

Making Greece swallow an even more bitter pill in July than Athens had been 申し込む/申し出d in January was 単に the harshest example of Berlin’s unyielding 姿勢. But by 押し進めるing 負かす/撃墜する on big countries like Italy, Spain, even フラン, Germany has been 達成するing her 目的(とする)s for the euro at the expense of her own 輸出(する)s.

With their economies in the doldrums, more and more Europeans in the eurozone have been cutting 支援する. Big-ticket items like German cars are not 取って代わるd nearly as often. Worse still, German 輸出(する)s to both Russia and 中国 are 縮むing. The tit-for-tat 許可/制裁s between Russia and the EU over the Ukrainian 危機 have 攻撃する,衝突する German 商売/仕事 hard.

Fat-cat ロシアのs can’t afford as many Mercs, or even BMWs, as before and the big ロシアの oil and gas companies aren’t 許すd to buy sophisticated 製品s from the likes of Siemens.

中国’s 減産/沈滞 is even more ominous for Germany. Until yesterday, 中国’s new rich snapped up 高級な 製品s from Germany but like the insecure 豊富な in the eurozone, they are 静かに 強化するing their belts.

Losing ground in 輸出(する) markets has 追加するd to German big 商売/仕事’s 支配するs about Merkel’s turn に向かって a green eco-economy. The (ドイツなどの)首相/(大学の)学長 押し進めるd through 廃止するing 核の 力/強力にする in Germany, but electricity prices are 急に上がるing to make renewables 支払う/賃金.

Rising energy costs, an 輸出(する) 下降 and now a reputational 災害 for the country’s 首相 brand have all put Germany on 辛勝する/優位. What 危険s making these 経済的な problems 有毒な is that they are brewing as Germany takes on the costs of a wave of 移民/移住 not seen since 1945.

After Hitler’s 敗北・負かす, West Germany 吸収するd ten million Germans who fled from the 共産主義者s. That was not 平易な but the new arrivals were 始める,決める to work in a 労働 集中的な economy. Today, Germany’s high-tech economy is short of 技術d 労働 and her 全住民 is 始める,決める to 縮む はっきりと. But are 第三世界 migrants, often unskilled, even 無学の, the answer to that problem?

Angela Merkel seemed supremely 確信して that they would be a boon when the migrant wave 殺到するd in August. Then the (ドイツなどの)首相/(大学の)学長 talked blithely about her country taking in 800,000 in its stride, year on year.

After 10年間s of watching the Germans waltz past us in every field ? 含むing our 国家の game ? you’d have to have a heart of 石/投石する not to gloat for a moment. But anyone with a brain can see that a Germany on the 激しく揺するs is not good for us either

Her strict 財政上の 政策s meant that Berlin had the cash in reserve to cover the 住宅, education, health and other costs of so many arrivals. Even before VW 攻撃する,衝突する the 衝撃を和らげるものs, Merkel was d emanding that the 残り/休憩(する) of the EU 株 the migrant 重荷(を負わせる). Her poorer Eastern 隣人s 欠如(する)d the cash to take on the costs. Berlin seemed to be 需要・要求するing they 支払う/賃金 the price for its moral 姿勢 now its 経済的な woes were 開始するing.

Germany is too important a 貿易(する)ing partner and too の近くに a 隣人 to indulge in schadenfreude. Some Tory eurosceptics see this as the moment for David Cameron to 押し進める hard for EU 改革(する) while Merkel is weak.

Maybe, but the 存在 of the EU itself is suddenly in play. Merkel’s high-手渡すd approach to so many 問題/発行するs has 疎遠にするd many other EU leaders. But while they agree on disliking 存在 bossed around from Berlin, they have no ありふれた 解答s.

At the same time, the 規模 of Germany’s problems seems to be reawakening the slumbering dragon of German 国家主義.

Stirrings of discontent were first felt in old East Germany. にもかかわらず losing four million people since 再統一, there was no enthusiasm for welcoming a wave of イスラム教徒 migrants.

The danger now is that Germany’s ‘Welcome to 難民s’ will turn terribly sour. With that, Germany’s 評判 as a stable 僕主主義 at the heart of Europe could curdle quickly as her political 設立 is (名声などを)汚すd by 失敗 after 失敗.

The end of Angela Merkel’s glory days is not just Germany’ s problem. Her self-(打撃,刑罰などを)与えるd crises will be our problem too.
