JENNI MURRAY: Demise of the 地区 nurse has left me so 脅すd of getting old

I remember so 明確に the 救済 I felt when, nearly 20 years ago, I was 定める/命ずるd special 注射s to 鎮圧する the nausea during my 地位,任命する-breast chemotherapy. I wasn't 特に old ― in my 中央の-50s ― but the arrival of the 地区 nurse to 注入する me, rather than having to do it myself, was wonderful.

We lived in a remote part of the countryside, 12 miles from the GP 外科. I felt a little 有罪の about her long 旅行 to help me.

'Not to worry,' she said. 'All part of the service.'

So, when my 79-year-old 隣人 (機の)カム home after her 膝 交替/補充, in so much 苦痛 she could barely walk but couldn't get her GP to visit for love nor money, I said: 'Get the 地区 nurse to come and give you some help. You can't just rely on your husband. He's 83, for goodness sake! You need professional help.'

She tried. Only to be told there is no longer such a thing as a 地区 nurse.

This week Age UK 最高潮の場面d 'the human 危機 広げるing behind の近くにd doors'. Its review 明らかにする/漏らすd that, since 2017-18, 36,000 より小数の old people have received long-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 care from their 地元の 当局 because the number of 地区 nursing 地位,任命するs has been 削除するd.

Age UK says almost a million 緊急 hospital admissions could be 避けるd each year if 年輩の people received better care at home. And that's what we want. My 隣人 doesn't want to be stuck in hospital, 封鎖するing a bed and losing 信用/信任 in her ability to get around ― and neither do I. I'm 罰金 now, but at 73 who knows what the 遠くない将来 may 持つ/拘留する?

Age UK's 統計(学) are terrifying. Poor 準備/条項 of services in the community means health problems go unnoticed until they mushroom into major 問題/発行するs.

Many hospital admissions come within 30 days of 以前 存在 発射する/解雇するd. My 隣人 is 予定 a hip 交替/補充 in 新規加入 to her 膝. How will she 回復する without proper home-based care after she's 発射する/解雇するd? Will she, as so many are, 結局最後にはーなる 支援する in hospital, losing her mental sharpness and mobility, 罠にかける on a 区 with no hope of returning home.

If you think I'm 存在 alarmist, between 13,000 and 14,000 older 患者s considered medically fit for 発射する/解雇する were 立ち往生させるd in hospital on any given day last winter.

Around 1.6 million of us, 老年の 65 and ov er, have care needs which are not 存在 met. How do you get up each day, struggling to get to the bathroom, unable to dress, trying and failing to make breakfast, knowing there's only an 平等に 貧困の partner to give you a 手渡す?

追加する to that the 恐れる, 苦しむd by 45 per cent of us, that we won't get to see our GP when we need him or her. What happened to the doctors who considered it their 義務 to make a home visit when necessary?

The 報告(する)/憶測 has also looked at the 出席 of us 年輩の folk at what I still stubbornly call '死傷者' ― 4.8 million older people went to A&E in 2021-22. Some of these will be people like me. I spent Sunday night at the walk-in centre of our 地元の small hospital, Finchley 記念の. The cat had, deliberately I think, knocked a very 激しい ashtray off the kitchen 反対する and it landed on my foot.

After nearly a week of 存在 in a lot of 苦痛, I noticed a small 削減(する) was becoming septic. At the walk-in, a clean-up, a dressing and a prescription for 抗生物質s solved it.

The service was 広大な/多数の/重要な, but a 地区 nurse could easily have done it at home and taken some 圧力 off A&E. Age UK is not without hope. The charity wants the country to switch from our over-依存 on hospitals to a 原則 of 'home first' ― a 'レーザー 焦点(を合わせる)' on 早期に 介入 with better 接近 to doctors, nurses and physiotherapists.

There are, they say, 微光s of hope in parts of the country where 活動/戦闘 is 存在 taken to 上げる community care, but far more needs to be done. It should not be a postcode 宝くじ when it comes to 落ちるs services and hospital-at-home 率先s. It should be the 権利 of every 年輩の person to know that after their long years of working for the 利益 of the community, the community should be there to 利益 them.

The Department of Health and Social Care says it is going to spend up to £700 million on adult social care 改革(する) over the next two years.

It sounds like a lot, but whatever 投資 has already been spent on the 年輩の is 率直に not in 証拠 where I live.

I know healthcare is hugely expensive. New and sophisticated 治療s for the 病気s that trouble us do not come cheap. But いつかs, 支援する to Basics is the best 解答. A familiar 地区 nurse who'll pop 一連の会議、交渉/完成する, check you're 承認する and look after you at home would put my mind at 残り/休憩(する) for my 未来.

Without him or her, the coming years are pretty scary. The way it used to be, please, would be such a 慰安 for so many.

Georgia May's Girl Guide style?

Georgia May Jagger, daughter of Mick, has discovered Burberry in a big way. I always thought the brand was just good for raincoats, but there she was modelling a bikini, skirt, socks and Wellington boots.

Georgia May must have been a Girl Guide: motto for everything, 含むing the British 天候 ― Be 用意が出来ている.

Aren't Terfs 価値(がある) 保護するing??

Trans woman Sarah Jane パン職人, who served 30 years for 殺人未遂 and 誘拐する, is 拍手喝采する at a Trans Pride 決起大会/結集させる for shouting: 'If you see a Terf, punch them in the 直面する.'

最初, no 返答 from the po lice. They're now reviewing the 事例/患者, but (人命などを)奪う,主張するd パン職人's words weren't a hate 罪,犯罪 as 'Terfs' are not covered by the Equality 法律.

Terf, let me remind the police, stands for trans-排除 過激な feminist, a 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 used by trans 行動主義者s to 侮辱 women who 同意しない with them; a 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 we 拒絶する.

A lavish party at the Prada Caffe in Harrods, a £2,100 designer handbag, then a trip to Disneyland with 花火s at the magical 城. If that's what Harper Beckham got for her 12th birthday, the mind boggles as to what will be laid on for her 18th!?

Weakest link? That'll be the train to Glasgow

To Glasgow by train on Thursday for a rec ording of The Weakest Link.

夜通し in a hotel. A 5.30am start, then got the 1.30pm train 支援する, hoping to be home by 5pm.

Long stop before Milton Keynes. Muffled (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) over tannoy about signal problems. Train returned to Rugby, where tannoy advised 乗客s to 長,率いる to Birmingham or Coventry as an 代案/選択肢 大勝する.

Lots of people got off in a panic. Twenty minutes later, another muffled 指示/教授/教育 to stay put as signal problems solved.

Glad I'd had no energy to move, but why didn't anyone speak to us 直面する-to-直面する? Arrived at Euston exhausted at 8.15pm. So much for the train taking the 緊張する . . .
