Psychologist Emma Kenny 爆破s 'celebrity-washing' that makes mental health 問題／発行するs seem 'sexy' as she opens up about how her father took his own life after a 戦う／戦い with 不景気

One of the UK's 主要な TV psychologists has 攻撃する，衝突する out at the 'marketing' of mental health - as she 解除するs the lid on her own experiences growing up with a parent with a mental illness.

Emma Kenny, who 定期的に appears on television and is 居住（者） therapist on ITV's This Morning, also called for a change in the way we approach mental health 問題／発行するs, 説: 'We've medicated the whole Western world and we've never been as unhappy.'

Kenny's comments feature in the new 一連の podcast My Family, Mental Illness and Me produced by charity Our Time, which supports children who have parents with mental illnesses.??

One in 10 children are living with an adult who has 厳しい mental health difficulties, によれば 人物／姿／数字s from the Office of the Children's Commissioner, and Our Time 申し込む／申し出s support and education around the 問題／発行する.

During her episode, 予定 to 空気／公表する on December 7th, Kenny recounts the traumatic moment her father, who had 苦しむd from psychotic 不景気, took his own life.

'I went to his house one day, having had this real 勧める to just go,' she says. She had been caring for her father, but 手配中の，お尋ね者 to take her son out for lunch, she tells host Dr Pamela Jenkins, a public 政策 研究員 who herself grew up with a parent 戦う／戦いing mental illness.

'All of a sudden I had this really uncomfortable feeling and I just dropped my son home and I dashed to my dad's. I can remember running through the gate and shouting him.'

She ran into the house where she 設立する her father hanging himself in the garage, she says. 'By the time I got to the garage and 削減（する） him 負かす／撃墜する, I was so hysterical. I couldn't resuscitate him because I wasn't in the mind space for it.'

She 述べるs the 状況／情勢 as a 'cataclysmic 大災害 where 最終的に I didn't save him', 説: 'that's something that's been really difficult to come to 条件 with, but also something that I've had to.'

Kenny 述べるs how the 外傷／ショック left her feeling suicidal, and said while mental health is 定期的に talked about in society, there is a 'sexiness' to the way it is marketed that's not always helpful.

'Honestly, don't even start with my bugbears of every other celebrity coming out with ADHD or autism,' she says.

'Because that makes it 許容できる, 権利? 反して the true nature of some of these 問題／発行するs is not that somebody's just struggling with social 苦悩. They're 取引，協定ing with this extreme 条件 that is 深く，強烈に 苦しめるing for them and problematic.

'It blows my mind how we 肉親，親類d of celebrity wash a lot of these things and it's so untenable and unreachable for people who are 現実に 取引，協定ing with the reality of that stuff.'

She says: 'We don't really have people in the 圧力（をかける） with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder', 追加するing: 'There's a sexiness to mental health now. It's been marketed in a sexy way. You know, 'Victoria's Secret model, who also has ADHD', 'this TV presenter who's also autistic'.'

Kenny 主張するs she's not 'having a go' at those people, 追加するing: 'But let's not put you in the same 部類 as somebody who genuinely is struggling on a day to day basis enormously.'

Dubbing it a 'marketing 策略', she goes on: 'The more sexy we make it, the more 許容できる it is for us to look at. But it's not 現実に how it feels for the person who's 取引，協定ing with it.'

Kenny also points out the difference between 'real 苦悩 and real 不景気' and what is often portrayed - 説 the 条件 are often used to 述べる 'natural' feelings like 存在 uncomfortable or sad.

'現実に with real 苦悩 and 不景気, you often don't want to get out of bed,' she says. 'Everything terrifies you. You feel massively 圧倒するd…

'You've got to be a 軍人 because genuinely it's like stepping through the most incredible mud and trying to swim to wherever we're going because it's so painful.'

She later 追加するs: 'It's not generalised 苦悩 disorder when you can't go to a party without feeling a bit uncomfortable… That's 現実に やめる human.'

'When it's real 苦悩, it's like you feel like everything かもしれない is going to be a 大災害 and the world could end any minute, 権利?

'We talk about 苦悩 and 不景気, but we don't talk about what it really is for people who really を煩う it. And what is really normal where people think they're 苦しむing from it, but they're not 苦しむing from it at all. They're just normal human 存在s in a 井戸／弁護士席 adjusted 明言する／公表する feeling things like nervousness or sadness, because life is sad at times and life is 刺激するing of 神経s at other times.

'But when it comes 負かす／撃墜する to the more 厳しい reality of mental illness… we don't have that really in 前線 of us. We don't have people who people relate to as going 'oh, 現実に, I didn't get out of bed for four weeks'.

Kenny also 攻撃する，衝突する out at the way mental health is medicated, and called for changes to the way 問題／発行するs are approached.

'Don't even get me started on the way that we medicate,' she tells the podcast. 'We've just medicated the whole Western world and we've never been as unhappy.

'And I'm like, 'when are we gonna wake up and be like, 井戸／弁護士席, maybe that's because we're doing it wrong?' Maybe that's because the actual things that need to change are not with the person's 内部の chemistry.

'Maybe the person who's anxious and depressed isn't 現実に broken at all. Maybe th ey're just 反応するing to a world around them that isn't working. Maybe it's because they're feeling 孤立するd because they've not got a community. Maybe it's because they feel like they've been brought up through a system which made them feel like a 失敗 because they weren't academic. But 現実に, they're brilliant in so many different areas, but they're just not 手段d on those areas.

'Maybe if we could start helping people see that the very things that need to change are 外部の, not 内部の to some degree, those individuals would find it easier.'
