Keeping Doctor Who in the family: How Former Time Lord Peter Davison's granddaughter also has an ex-Doctor - David Tennant - for a father...

When he was still The Doctor, he could sort out any problem in the universe with a flick of his sonic screwdriver. But now, David Tennant has to do things the hard way ? 含むing changing the nappies of his three-month-old daughter, Olive. How is he 対処するing?

‘Very 井戸/弁護士席, 明らかに ? at least, up to a point,’ says Peter Davison, 60, a former Doctor himself and father of David’s fianc?e, actress Georgia Moffett, 26.

‘I asked Georgia whether David changed his daughter’s nappies and she said, “Yes, but it takes him forever.” Which either means he’s genuinely trying to do them 適切に but taking his time about it, or is doing them so slowly Georgia will 結局 get annoyed and say, “Forget it, I’ll do them myself.”

‘I suppose he could be like one of those men who breaks all the plates while washing up, in the hope somebody else will do it for them. But I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う that David is just trying to change the nappies 適切に because he’s a good dad. I think he’s besotted with his daughter.’

The same might be said of Peter and his granddaughter. We 会合,会う to discuss his new 役割 in TV 演劇 法律 & Order: UK. But he can’t resist the 適切な時期 to talk about Olive, a halfsister for Ty, the nine-year-old son Georgia gave birth to when she was only 17.

‘She’s gorgeous,’ says Peter, who is about to be seen as Henry Sharpe, the new Director of the 栄冠を与える 起訴 Service, in 法律 & Order: UK. ‘Olive more than makes up for the fact that 存在 a grandfather is a 調印する you’re getting old.’

If becoming a grandparent when he was barely into his 50s (機の)カム as a bit of a shock, one might imagine having another Time Lord as the father of one’s granddaughter must have been a surprise too. But Peter 同意しないs.

‘It was no 広大な/多数の/重要な shock Georgia followed her mother (US actress Sandra Dickinson) and me into 事実上の/代理. Georgia had always 手配中の,お尋ね者 to 行為/法令/行動する, she’s been successful at it, and she happened to get a part on Doctor Who, as The Doctor’s cloned daughter Jenn y. David and Georgia became friends on the show, and it went from there.

‘I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う that, crucially, Georgia wasn’t overawed by David. He’s a really nice guy, but a lot of people are 脅迫してさせるd by actors who’ve played The Doctor. I’ve been asked to 提起する/ポーズをとる for photos with fans who’ve been shaking beside me, just because I played The Doctor.

men have played The Doctor since the show began in 1963.

Eight of them are still alive.

‘I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う that goes on too with David, who, like me, is 脅迫してさせるing without doing anything to 脅迫してさせる. Georgia was able to get over that, partly because she’s strong and 勇敢な, and partly because she grew up around an actor who played The Doctor. She was never fazed by 会合 TV actors when she was a child ? it’s second nature to her.’

Georgia and David will marry at some point during the next 12 months, though Peter 推定する/予想するs they’ll 選ぶ for a 従来の, un-showbizzy 儀式. ‘I very much 疑問 they’ll have a Doctor Who 主題d wedding, for example,’ says Peter, almost shuddering at the prospect. ‘I don’t think that’s their “thing.”’

Just having two Doctors in の近くに proximity will be enough to make the occasion stand out from the usual nuptials. 以前, when David was still playing the time traveller, Peter 明らかにする/漏らすd the starstudded line-up at a Sunday lunch 集会 that had taken place at the home of Doctor Who 生産者 Steven Moffat.

‘の中で those there were me, my wife Elizabeth, David, Georgia, my two sons and, of course, Steven himself. Halfway through the meal, my son Joel, who was about eight then, 麻薬を吸うd up, ‘Dad, should I hang a 調印する on the 前線 door 説, knock if you want an autograph?’ He was 権利 ? there would have been Doctor Who fans 列ing 一連の会議、交渉/完成する the 封鎖する if they’d known we were all there.’

There’s no 疑問 Peter is delighted to have welcomed David to his family. The 40-year-old actor was in his good 調書をとる/予約するs from the off, 明らかにする/漏らすing that Peter had been his favourite Doctor while growing up in Scotland in the 1980s. His 事実上の/代理 talents, too, 明確に impressed his 未来 father-in-法律.

‘David 利益d from the 前進するs in 科学(工学)技術 there have been since my time in the 早期に 1980s, when the programme’s 始める,決めるs used to wobble about but, that said, I thought he did a fantastic 職業. It was sad when he decided to move on from the 役割.’

事実上の/代理 王朝: Peter Davison as Doctor Who in the 早期に 1980s

Peter ? who racked up 70 episodes as The Doctor between 1981 and 1984 and went on to 星/主役にする in TV 演劇s such as A Very Peculiar Practice and At Home With The Braithwaites ? chuckles at the idea of him 存在 the 長,率いる of an 事実上の/代理 王朝 to 競争相手 the Redgraves or the Foxes. But it’s 急速な/放蕩な becoming a reality.

His daughter, and the mother of his daughter, both 行為/法令/行動する, as does his 未来 son-in-法律. Even his sons by his wife Elizabeth Morton ? Louis, 11, and Joel, nine ? play the piano and have 成し遂げるd on 行う/開催する/段階 at school, while their mother was a 正規の/正選手 in TV shows such as ITV sitcom Watching and period 演劇 Jeeves And Wooster in the 1990s.

Even Peter’s grandson Ty has done some 事実上の/代理, at Sandra Dickinson’s theatre school in London. ‘存在 one of the originators of an 事実上の/代理 王朝 certainly is a nice thought,’ grins Peter, ‘although it’s the idea of me somehow 存在 this 年上の 政治家, the 長,率いる of such a 王朝, that I’m not so keen on.’

I looked up and caught sight of myself in a large, 十分な-length mirror, it wasn’t a pretty sight and I thought, 'God, I’m not as young as I thought I was'

調印するs of his 前進するing years, he says, are everywhere. There’s his 役割 as Professor Callahan, the 上級の member of the cast of W est End musical 合法的に Blonde, a part he’ll play until at least October. And, of course, there’s his character in 法律 & Order: UK, a man who has かなりの importance and gravitas within the English 合法的な system.

Surely having a couple of young sons must keep him feeling youthful, though? ‘They do. As do walks with our miniature schnauzer, Stanley ? and 開会/開廷/会期s with my newly acquired skipping rope!

‘But ageing is 必然的な. For years, I thought I looked younger than I was and then I caught sight of myself on TV, with more of a receding hairline than I thought I had, and a bit more of a 二塁打 chin. Though the real wake-up call happened in a nightclub in 物陰/風下d, when I was filming At Home With The Braithwaites for ITV around ten years ago. I was strutting my stuff on the dance 床に打ち倒す when I looked up and caught sight of myself in a large, 十分な-length mirror. It wasn’t a pretty sight and I thought, “God, I’m not as young as I thought I was.”

‘That was a shock, although, finally, I feel comfortable playing someone as 円熟した as Henry in 法律 & Order: UK. Entering the “esteemed lawyer” 段階 of my career is 現実に やめる enjoyable.’

Peter 否定するs he struggles to 対処する with 存在 an older father. The problems he has keeping his boys in check are ありふれた to all parents, he reckons, rather than 明確な/細部 to him. ‘I lay 負かす/撃墜する the 法律 and do my fair 株 of shouting, but I’m 明確に not an 脅迫してさせるing 人物/姿/数字 to them. I may be about to play a man on TV with a lot of 当局, but if you’ve seen me trying to get my sons to do their homework, you’ll know there’s a big difference between the character and the actor playing him.

‘And I don’t think it’s because I’m an older dad. Georgia, when she was growing up and I was still in my 30s and 40s, used to 包む me around her little finger.’ All of this 示唆するs Peter would be unwise to pass on his parenting 技術s to his 未来 son-in-法律.

‘I 港/避難所’t done so yet, and I won’t. I remember resenting it when Sandra’s parents tried to pass it on to me, when Georgia was born. If you’re from the older 世代, your advice is either out of date, you’ve forgotten it or it comes across as patronising. ‘Anyway, David seems to be doing a good 職業 without any input from me.’

Peter 星/主役にするs in 法律 & Order: UK from Monday 11 July on ITV1 at 9pm.
