Watch out! Your choice of summer novel 明らかにする/漏らすs more about you than you think, says psychologist Susan Quilliam

You've covered yourself in sun cream and are relaxing with that blockbuster you 選ぶd up at the airport… But did it ever occur to you that the novel in your 手渡す tells people more about you than your beach-babe bling or designer sunnies.

関係 psychologist Susan Quilliam says that although we 裁判官 first on 外見, it's not 高さ, 負わせる or colour that gives people the first 手がかり(を与える)s to your personality, but the things about us we can change, such as 着せる/賦与するs, hairstyles or indeed the 調書をとる/予約するs we read.

'While 調書をとる/予約する covers will never give you the ins and outs of someone's character,' says Quilliam, 'they will tell you about more general things, such as a woman's 身元 ? singleton, wife, mother ? and, more importantly, her aspirations.'

When it comes to summer reading, though, most of us are 有罪の of meandering off our usual literary 跡をつける and 選ぶing for 平易な entertainment over the 最新の Booker Prize 勝利者. によれば Susan, this is the literary 同等(の) of eating 慰安 food, and doesn't mean that all the brightly coloured bonkbusters and chick lit novels that fill the bookshops and airports during the summer months 申し込む/申し出 a 誤った impression of who their readers are.

Just as you might have a holiday fling with someone you wouldn't give a second ちらりと見ること to 支援する home, so holiday novels tend to be about escapism, though the chances are they'll still 反映する the life 行う/開催する/段階 you're going through, whether it's marriage, motherhood or 離婚. Any man trying to get a 扱う on who you are from the summer blockbuster you're reading will therefore still be able 選ぶ up 手がかり(を与える)s about your personality from its cover, and will most likely be attracted to someone who appears to be going through the same life 行う/開催する/段階 as him. Who knows where a 調書をとる/予約する's cover might lead you?

Here's my 選択 of ten 広大な/多数の/重要な beach reads this summer ? and what they say about you.

Gold Diggers, Tasmina Perry (HarperCollins, £12.99)

What's it about: This is the 肉親,親類d of 80s-style bonkbuster that's 保証(人)d to 注入する your holiday with glamour, as Karin, Erin and Molly 追求する their Mr 権利 ? 億万長者 Adam Gold ? from the beaches of St Barts to the slopes of St Moritz.

What the cover says about you: Quilliam reckons such an aspirational cover 示唆するs the reader's a dreamer and probably a career girl with her sights 始める,決める on the 最高の,を越す.

Man 控訴,上告: This 調書をとる/予約するs says you're ambitious and かもしれない high 維持/整備, so it should attract 類似して aspirational men, though it might 阻止する someone more low 重要な.

Me and Mr Darcy, Alexander Potter (Hodder, £6.99)

What it's about: Bookshop 経営者/支配人 Emily Albright decides to holiday in England by joining a Jane Austen 調書をとる/予約する 小旅行する, but what she gets is a coachful of OAPs, a surly 新聞記者/雑誌記者 and, disconcertingly, Mr Darcy himself, making it the perfect reading romcom.

What the cover says about you: 'The white background featuring a wafer-thin girl couldn't be more girly,' says Quilliam. But the について言及する of Darcy 示唆するs the reader's intelligent 同様に as romantic.

Man 控訴,上告: If he's heard of Darcy at all, it's most likely Ms Austen's 見解/翻訳/版, not Bridget Jones's, so any man drawn by this cover is likely to be bookish.

The Personal Shopper, Carmen Reid (Corgi, £6.99)

What's it about: Personal shopper and 選び出す/独身 mum Annie Valentine is 広大な/多数の/重要な at filling the gaps in her (弁護士の)依頼人s' wardrobes, but can't fill the vacancy in her love life. It's a 満足させるing slice of escapism and more heartwarming than an expensive 一連の会議、交渉/完成する of 小売 therapy.

What it says about you: 'This 叫び声をあげるs fashionista,' says Susan. The pink is girly and frothy, but the 詳細(に述べる) 示唆するs its reader is more stylish than classic.

Man 控訴,上告: The saccharine cover would put most men off, 'except the 肉親,親類d that wants a 井戸/弁護士席-groomed トロフィー wife,' says Quilliam, in which 事例/患者, the pinker and blonder the better.

The School for Husbands, Wendy Holden (Headline Review, £6.99)

What it's about: What does 示す do when his wife walks out, feeling neglected and unloved? He enrols in the school for husbands in a 企て,努力,提案 to 再燃する their romance. Holden's on 最高の,を越す form and will leave every reader wishing her husband/boyfriend would do the same.

What the cover says about you: 'The edgy cover 示唆するs someone 有望な, sassy and in 支配(する)/統制する,' says Quilliam. 'She's also probably older and more 現実主義の about love.'

Man 控訴,上告: The reader of this 調書をとる/予約する has probably had a few 関係s and wants a man who's 円熟した enough to take on a feisty woman who knows her own mind.

The 事故 Man, Tom Cain (Bantam 圧力(をかける), £12.99)

What it's about: What better way to 祝う/追悼する the tenth 周年記念日 of Diana's death than with a 共謀 thriller? It might not be tasteful, but it's morbidly enthralling, and should 控訴,上告 to fans of Dan Brown and his ilk.

What the cover says about you: 'The dark stylized monochrome cover on this is pretty masculine,' says Quilliam, 示唆するing the woman's not a girly girl, and is either 選び出す/独身 or happily settled. She's also likely to be 有望な and 利益/興味d in 現在の 事件/事情/状勢s.

Man 控訴,上告: Men will be able to relate to this cover more than most of the others, so they're probably more likely to take a second look at the reader, thinks Quilliam.

Garden (一定の)期間s, Sarah Addison Allen (Hodder & Stoughton, £12.99)

What it's about: This Chocolat-style southern-fried tale of magical goings on is perfect for those with kooky tastes. In a town remarkable for its inhabitants' strange and spooky ways, the Waverleys' antics stand out more than most and will have you under their (一定の)期間.

What the cover says about you: 'The 黒人/ボイコット cover hints at style, elegance and depth,' says Quilliam, 示唆するing the reader's one sophisticated lady.

Man 控訴,上告: The 黒人/ボイコット cover 暗示するs a darker sexuality which should 控訴,上告 to men, who'll see you as mysterious and 熱烈な rather than romantic.

Fifty is Not a Four Letter Word, Linda Kelsey (Hodder, £6.99)

What it's about: This is Bridget Jones for an older, wiser and decidedly more jaded 世代, as Hope comes to 条件 with turning 50. Her tale of hitting 激しく揺する 底(に届く) and bouncing 支援する makes for a funny, touching and life-断言するing read.

What the cover says about you: 'This is the sexiest cover of all,' says Quilliam. 'You'd 推定する/予想する the reader to be older, and probably going through some sort of life 危機.'

Man 控訴,上告: Men would assume the reader's 円熟した but still 性の, though the について言及する of 'fifty' in the 肩書を与える will probably put off any would-be toyboys.

Bit of a Blur, Alex James (Little Brown, £16.99)

What it's about: This memoir will 控訴,上告 to all Britpopsters, 供給するing you with a tantalising 頂点(に達する) into the inner sanctum of the 90s 激しく揺する'n'roll scene, and since Blur was the posh art-school antidote to Oasis, it also 利益s from 存在 rather 井戸/弁護士席-written.

What the cover says about you: Although the 調書をとる/予約する's contents are edgy, the 風刺漫画 style cover is 公正に/かなり innocent - almost reminiscent of a children's 調書をとる/予約する - 示唆するing that though you're hip, you don't like to shout about it.

Man 控訴,上告: If you're open to a fun, frivolous holiday romance this 調書をとる/予約する will send all the 権利 signals - he'll 推定する you're unshocked by pop-星/主役にする 超過 and are a bit of a party girl. He's also likely to guess that you're attracted to arty, bohemian men so don't be surprised if he tries to serenade you.

The Secret, Rhonda Byrne (Simon & Schuster, £12)

What it's about: If you're mind, 団体/死体, spirit oriented, this self-help 手動式の to 打ち明けるing your hidden 可能性のある and 明らかにする/漏らすing the 法律s of attraction, with its 利益/興味ing if わずかに spurious allusions to Plato, Leonardo and Einstein, will make the ideal beach companion.

What the cover says about you: The sepia-色合いd 地図/計画する on the cover hints at Dan Brown-style mystery and intrigue, 示唆するing the reader has hidden depths and an enquiring mind.

Man 控訴,上告: This cover will definitely get male attention, just don't be surprised if he's disappointed when he finds out the 調書をとる/予約する's all New Age when he's been 推定する/予想するing 活動/戦闘 and adventure.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde (Penguin Popular Classics, £2)

What it's about: Wilde is at his scurilous best in this cautionary tale of vanity and deception. When the glamorous young Dorian wishes his portrait would age rather than him, little does he realize he's kissing goodbye to all that is innocent and good.

What the cover says about you: 'Green is the thinking woman's pink,' says Quilliam, and the combination of penguin logo and classic 肩書を与える shows you're a woman of 実体.

Man 控訴,上告: The fact that you're reading a classic tells him you're an intelligent worldly woman, so he'll be 推定する/予想するing sparkling conversation over and above romance.

団体/死体 Language Secrets, Susan Quilliam (Thorson's £6.99)
