We're pawly like our pets: From debilitating tummy troubles to 癌, 会合,会う the women who are so in tune with their dogs they 株 the SAME illnesses
- Crohn's 病気 苦しんでいる人 Lauren May, 30, has dog Luna 苦しむing with IBD
- Sheila Walker, 60, and Yorkshire Terrier Banna are 戦う/戦いing 癌 together
- 専門家s said owners and pets may 株 respiratory?病気 予定 to 環境
They know when you’re sad and need a cuddle. They 株 your darkest and happiest moments, your home, your sofa and your life.
No wonder dogs have the 評判 for 存在 man’s ― and woman’s ― best friend.
Now there’s another way in which the 社債 between humans and their canines is 存在 強化するd. In their illnesses.
As our lives overlap, breathing the same 空気/公表する and 存在 支配するd to the same changing 強調する/ストレス levels, we are 株ing the same 病気s ― with uncanny 平行のs.
It’s something Lauren May discovered with her beloved cocker spaniel, Lula. Lauren, 30, a part-time accounts 行政官/管理者 from Bristol, has been 戦う/戦いing Crohn’s 病気, a 厳しい form of inflammatory bowel 病気 (IBD), since she was 12.

Emily Palmer, 21, from Wiltshire, and her nine-year-old pug Teddy both を煩う gastritis
In 最近の years Lula has been with her beloved ‘Mummy’ through every 哀れな ゆらめく-up and was ready with a 防備を堅める/強化するing nuzzle as Lauren recuperated from major 外科 in October 2015.
‘A few months later, as I grew stronger, Lula seemed to go downhill,’ says Lauren. ‘She lost her hair, 負わせる and appetite, and it all seemed so familiar ― that was me, in dog form, when I first fell ill.’
に引き続いて 実験(する)s and an 夜通し stay at the v et’s 外科, Lula was 診断するd with IBD.
‘I was 荒廃させるd and cried in 前線 of the vet, 完全に aghast that my dog could have the same serious 医療の 条件 that has blighted almost 20 years of my life,’ says Lauren, who lives with husband Jordan, 31, a locksmith, and their daughter Ava, two.
‘I’d end ured so much 悲惨 and 苦痛 with IBD and couldn’t 耐える the thought of my gorgeous little dog having to 耐える the same. Even the vet was incredulous at our 株d diagnosis.’
Although it sounds like a thousand-to-one coincidence, ますます pets are having the same 病気s as their owners, with dogs and cats 苦しむing from obesity, 糖尿病, heart 病気, 癌 and 喘息, just like humans.

Lauren May, 30, from Bristol and her cocker spaniel Luna have bowel trouble. Ms May struggles from Crohn's 病気 while Luna has IBD
This was brought into sharp 焦点(を合わせる) recently when Sheila Walker, from 物陰/風下d, 明らかにする/漏らすd how she and her Yorkshire Terrier, Banna, are 戦う/戦いing 癌 together ― in the same parts of their 団体/死体s.
Sheila, 60, had incurable 癌 in her 権利 breast and spine 診断するd in 2015, and a year later Banna was 設立する to also have 癌 in her spine and on the 権利 味方する of her 団体/死体. Sheila said: ‘We’re best friends. She’s my world. We’re going to do this together.
‘It’s やめる weird and strange that we’re on 正確に/まさに the same 旅行 together. We have good days and bad days but we’re always there for each other.’
研究員s are 診察するing the 役割 汚染物s and other 環境の factors play in these mirrored 病気s, while doctors and vets have begun to work together to identify ありふれた 危険 factors such as pesticides, 空気/公表する 汚染物s, cigarette smoke and 世帯 化学製品s. 一方/合間, a 熟考する/考慮する last summer by zoologists at Sweden’s Linkoping University 示唆するd that dogs certainly mirror the 強調する/ストレス levels of their owners.
The 熟考する/考慮する 診察するd levels of 強調する/ストレス hormone cortisol 手段d in hair 見本s taken from owners and their dogs. The results showed ‘重要な の間の-種類 correlations in long-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 強調する/ストレス’.
研究員s 述べるd it as ‘the first time we have seen a long-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 synchronisation in 強調する/ストレス levels between members of two different 種類’.

Sheila Walker, 60, from 物陰/風下d, was 診断するd with 癌 in her 権利 breast and spine in 2015. A year later 心にいだくd pet Bana was also 設立する to have 癌 in her spine and on her 権利 味方する
Nottingham Vet Natalie Scroggie says she has seen pets and owners with mirror illnesses. ‘環境の factors certainly play a part,’ she says, ‘so we see respiratory 病気s such as 喘息 in animals more 一般的に in homes where people smoke.
‘類似して, animals are more 傾向がある to 強調する/ストレス-関係のある instances where there is 強調する/ストレス at home and their owners are also 影響する/感情d ― for example, if there has been a bereavement. It isn’t uncommon to see diabetic owners with diabetic animals, either. Some forms of 糖尿病 in animals are 類似の to type 2 糖尿病 in people and 株 some of the same 危険 factors, such as obesity, 欠如(する) of 演習 and poor diet.’
Lauren May is still perplexed that she and Lula have the same 医療の 条件 but believes it was 運命/宿命 that they are together.
‘I can’t believe that of all the dogs I could have chosen, I 選ぶd one who ended up with IBD,’ Lauren says. ‘But it means I can really empathise with how she’s feeling and look after her with a lot of insight when she’s unwell, giving her plenty of cuddles and 残り/休憩(する).’
Crohn’s 病気 is classed as an ‘invisible’ illness and an autoimmune 病気. During a ゆらめく-up the large bowel becomes ulcerated, making eating excruciatingly painful.
‘At my worst, my 注目する,もくろむs would also be sore, my 肌 爆発するd in psoriasis and my hair started 落ちるing out. I lost 負わせる and would have awful stomach upsets,’ Lauren 明らかにする/漏らすs. ‘There have been countless times when I’ve been on my 膝s in agony at work or in the supermarket.
‘During my teens and 20s I lost a lot of friends because I was 絶えず having to 辞退する social 招待s or 取り消す 手はず/準備 I’d already made.
‘My 負わせる yo-yoed between ゆらめく-ups and I had to have アイロンをかける infusions because my bowel isn’t 有能な of 吸収するing 適する nutrients and ビタミンs from food.
‘I also had to eat a plain diet, mostly consisting of chicken and boiled potatoes. It wasn’t until I was 21 that doctors stopped 解任するing my problems as irritable bowel syndrome and realised there was something more serious going on.’

Elle Sydall, 30, from Manchester, chose dog Pippa before discovering that they both を煩う an underactive 甲状腺 (分泌する為の)腺
Lauren bought Lula as a puppy from a 子孫を作る人, using money gifted to her and her husband when they married in August 2014. ‘My husband 作品 nights as an out-of-hours locksmith and I 猛烈に 手配中の,お尋ね者 the company of a dog when I was flaked out alone and unwell on the sofa,’ she says.
‘I couldn’t believe it when Lula started to 陳列する,発揮する symptoms that I recognised. When the vet 診断するd her 条件, she said to me: “Do you know what IBD is?”
‘Once I’d stopped crying and explained to her that I also have IBD and had recently had major 外科, she was as astonished as I was that Lula has the same 条件.’
Fortunately, Lula’s 条件 is manageable through a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken. But when she feels 貧しく, just like Lauren she loses her appetite and it’s difficult to tempt her to eat or drink.
It is a 類似の story for 数字表示式の content 経営者/支配人 Elle Syddall. She and her dog Pippa both have an underactive 甲状腺 ― and take 同一の 医薬.

Ms Sydall shows the pills herself and her dog Pippa take together every morning
Elle, 30, believes there could have been some sixth sense at play when she and Pippa ‘chose each other’ at a Dogs 信用 centre in Manchester earlier this year.
‘It was love at first sight as this 厳しく overweight but gorgeous miniature schnauzer and terrier cross, with four bald patches and matted fur, waddled over looking like a big teddy 耐える,’ says Elle.
‘We had 初めは spoken about having a puppy but decided we would rather get a dog in need of help and a new home. It’s as if Pippa knew we had something in ありふれた when she (機の)カム waddling over to me that day.
‘Staff told us she’d been neglected by her previous owner, who 許すd her to eat anything, 含むing the children’s food, and only took her for one or two walks a week. They also said the vet had taken some 血 実験(する)s from Pippa and they were waiting for the results 支援する.’
But Elle, who lives with her partner 示す, 37, a telecoms engineer, already had her 疑惑s about what was afflicting her new best friend.
‘I was 診断するd 老年の ten after 伸び(る)ing a lot of 負わせる にもかかわらず 存在 a skinny child. I remember feeling exhausted all the time, and my hair and 肌 存在 dull.
‘Then we saw the exact same symptoms in Pippa. When we first brought her home she was so lethargic, her coat was dull and she was so used to 存在 greedy that she even used to eat the cat’s food, which really shocked me.
‘A few days later, we got a call from the vet to say the 実験(する) results had come 支援する and Pippa had an underactive 甲状腺 ― just like me. She must have been feeling awful.
‘I remember that feeling all too 井戸/弁護士席. But since getting a diagnosis and 医薬, 加える a 決まりきった仕事 where we walk her three times a day and 料金d her a strict diet, she’s like a different dog.
‘And we never forget our 医薬. It’s our morning 決まりきった仕事: Pippa takes her pill and I take 地雷. We’re a team.’

Ms Palmer 持つ/拘留するs pug Teddy 安定した on her (競技場の)トラック一周 (left) while showing his pills, and 抱擁するs him in her 武器 (権利). She noticed a change in the pug in late 2017
Emily Palmer, 21, 株 激烈な/緊急の gastritis ― sudden inflammation or swelling in the lining of the stomach ― with her pug Teddy, who is nine.
Emily’s 条件 was 診断するd three years ago and a year later Teddy’s vet 発表するd that he has the same illness, for which they will both take daily 医薬 無期限に/不明確に.
‘I’ve had Teddy for seven years and by the time 実験(する)s and an endoscopy 明らかにする/漏らすd I had gastritis in 2016, I’d been ill for six months,’ says Emily, who 作品 in marketing and lives with her parents in Wiltshire.
‘It started with chronic tummy 苦痛s and an 激しい 燃やすing sensation in my abdomen. I was 定期的に sick and felt 十分な all the time, even when I hadn’t eaten. It made socialising tricky and pretty much 支配するd out any 招待s to join friends or family for food.
‘When the 苦痛 was at its worst I’d need to 嘘(をつく) 負かす/撃墜する and writhe around to find a position that gave me some 救済. I used hot water 瓶/封じ込めるs 24/7 and was on 苦痛 救済, but nothing touched it.
‘The endoscopy ― a camera 負かす/撃墜する my throat ― 明らかにする/漏らすd that my stomach was red raw and I had gastritis, which I’d never even heard of before.
‘They put me on 医薬 called omeprazole, which I take every morning to 減ずる the 量 of 酸性の in my stomach.’
Emily noticed a change in Teddy in late 2017.
‘He’s not a dog to turn 負かす/撃墜する food and will do anything for a taste of roast chicken on a Sunday,’ she says. ‘If he knows it’s there, you can’t even tempt him away from it with a walk.
‘In the summer he likes to eat apples and plums from the trees in our garden, which I can’t imagine 援助(する)s his digestion, so we’ve tried to put 障壁s around the trees. But he just digs under them and cries until he can reach the fruit.’

Ms May said she was shocked to find out she and her dog 株d the same 条件. Luna ha d always been there for her while she was 苦しむing, Ms May said
Emily 追加するs: ‘So, it was worrying when he lost his appetite and started vomiting. He wasn’t his usual chirpy self, wasn’t jumping around and seemed tired and a bit 負かす/撃墜する.
‘The vet did 血 実験(する)s and looked at his diet to see if there might be a food intolerance ― which 始める,決める alarm bells (犯罪の)一味ing, as it was the same 過程 that I’d been through.
‘結局 the vet said they would try putting him on 酸性の-減ずるing tablets called omeprazole ― the same 麻薬 I take ― which was a shock. Even the vet was taken aback and 述べるd it as a “bizarre coincidence”.’
Like Emily, Teddy takes his tablets (hidden in chicken) daily, and both of them will have to do so 無期限に/不明確に because their symptoms are so 激烈な/緊急の.
‘He and I already had a strong 社債 but it has 深くするd since his diagnosis,’ Emily says.
‘I’m the only one in the house who really understands what he’s going through and 副/悪徳行為 versa, so on days when one or both of us is feeling below par, we curl up on the sofa together.’
