Can dinner made from TINNED food taste as good as fresh? Mother creates three 'unappetising looking' dishes for 72p - so will her children and husband 位置/汚点/見つけ出す the difference?
- Mieka Smiles, 34, made three meals using just tinned 成分s
- She was 奮起させるd by chef and canned food 選挙運動者, Jack Monroe?
- Husband Christopher 正確に guessed all three were made from cans?
- Children Harriet, 3, and George, 5, didn't think much of the meals?
- All meals cost いっそう少なく than 35p a 長,率いる, with fish cakes at just 18p a 長,率いる?
Chef-on-a-shoestring Jack Munroe recently wowed foodies with meals made 完全に out of canned food.
Not only did the cook fool diners on BBC Two 文書の Inside The Factory?into thinking the dishes were made from fresh 成分s, they were also astonishingly cheap ? with fishcakes coming in at just 17p per 長,率いる.
Jack ? also a food writer ? feels that canned food is often passed over 予定 to 'snobbery', and if chosen wisely they can 申し込む/申し出 up an 豊富 of ビタミンs and minerals.?

Mieka Smiles, pictured here with three-year-old daughter Harriet, tried cooking meals just using canned 成分s, with mixed results
So Teeside 新聞記者/雑誌記者 and mother-of-two Mieka Smiles, 34, followed Jack's example and tried to create three meals using only tinned foods - and 実験(する)d if her family could taste the difference...
THE EXPERIMENT?
'Tinned bacon?! Who on earth would buy tinned bacon?', asked an appalled fellow shopper.
But rather than 株ing her disgust, I scavenged to see what other canned delights I could 位置/汚点/見つけ出す in the tinned food aisle at my nearest Tesco.

An aisle of canned food at Tesco supermarket. An appalled fellow shopper asked mother-of-two Mieka: 'Who would buy tinned bacon?'
Chef Jack Munroe, who specialises in cooking meals on a tight 予算, had 奮起させるd me to check out the canned 申し込む/申し出ing after an impressive segment of Inside The Factory on BBC Two.
As a working mum I'm often a bit stretched for time ? and always up for saving a bit of cash - so I decided to see if I could make a couple of family meals in the same way Jack had done on the show: 完全に from canned goods.
It's a canned utopia in Tesco: burgers, beef, and bacon.

Mieka bought tinned tomato soup, 巨大な hot dogs, new potatoes in water, sliced mushrooms in water - before cheating by 追加するing fresh cheddar cheese - for her hot dog hotpot at just 35p a 長,率いる

Mieka bought canned whole green beans, sweetcorn, new potatoes in water and mackerel for her mackerel fish cakes, which cost just 18p a 長,率いる
But what on earth was I going to make for my fussy family, 含むing my three-year-old Harriet, five-year-old George and 35-year-old husband Christopher?
After frantic Googling, I decide to have a go, like Jack, at fish cakes - but using mackerel instead of sardines.
I also find an 平易な recipe for corned beef hash and, to try and tempt the kids, I 得る,とらえる some hot dogs for a 肉親,親類d of toddler's sausage hotpot.
We all 示すd the foods out of five for taste, 贈呈, and I also gave 示すs for 緩和する of prep, price of 成分s - and 明らかにする/漏らす the price per 長,率いる.
I also 追加するd a bit of ambiguity to the 実験 and asked Chris to guess which dish I have used fresh 成分s for.
Please 公式文書,認める, given the recipes have been ひどく adapted from 初めのs, all 成分 量s are approximate, as are all costs.

Mieka bought canned corned beef, new potatoes in water, sweetcorn and baked beans in tomato sauce to make a corned beef hash for just 30p a 長,率いる

With a squeeze of lemon, these mackerel fish cakes would be delicious if served up with some fresh veg or salad
MACKEREL FISH CAKES
As I lump the tinned potatoes out into the pan, I feel worried.
How on earth is a truly uninspiring tower of value-範囲 tinned foods going to translate into an edible, fresh-tasting meal?
I warm through the potatoes for five minutes and they easily mash. I 追加する in a knob of butter, 同様に as salt and pepper.

The tinned new potatoes easily mash after 存在 warmed through for Mieka's mackerel fish cakes recipe
Next, I 追加する chopped green beans, pop in sweetcorn and 追加する the mackerel ? that I've shredded - into the mix.
I warm the pan and pop in a good glug of olive oil.?After they've been 形態/調整d into patties I pop them in to lightly fry one by one, five minutes on each 味方する.
They are golden brown - certainly starting to look the part. But will they taste it?
The kids, unfortunately, won't go 近づく them. Even with 賄賂s of choccy for dessert.
'They're 承認する, them,' says Chris ? but 正確に guesses that they have been made with tinned 製品s.?
The main 消極的な was that they weren't as 'formed' 同様に as they could have been ? 治療(薬)d by breadcrumbs or half an hour in the fridge before frying off perhaps?

Mieka's kids, Harriet, 3, and George, 5, wouldn't eat the mackerel fish cakes made out of value 範囲 tinned foods

Mieka's husband Christopher, 35, pictured eating the mackerel fish cakes, guessed the fish cakes had been made with tinned 製品s but said 'they're okay, them'

Mieka's corned beef hash was the tastiest dish she 用意が出来ている using tinned 成分s, and cost 30p a 長,率いる
CORNED BEEF HASH
Another meal, another pile of tins that I just cannot see transforming into something tasty.
And when I finally manage to open my first-ever can of corned beef, I'm even more panicked. Yuck.
But I persevere, warming through the potatoes and lightly 鎮圧するing them before 追加するing a knob of butter, salt and pepper.
I then '準備する' the corned beef by cutting it into small squares.
I lightly mix the corned beef and sweetcorn into the potatoes and fry it all off with olive oil, before 追加するing in the baked beans.

Mieke is pleasantly surprised by her corned beef hash dish, 率ing it 17 out of 20. It goes 負かす/撃墜する a 扱う/治療する with her family, too
It all gets carefully spooned into a casserole dish and put on a medium to high heat in the oven for half an hour, checking to make sure the 最高の,を越す doesn't 燃やす.
And, I have to say, once it's taken out of the oven it smells delicious.?I'm shocked.
The kids 注目する,もくろむ it with 疑惑 and I struggle to get them to eat more than a couple of spoonfuls.
But Chris and I both really enjoy it, 特に with a 味方する serving of baked beans. However, he once again 正確に guesses that 非,不,無 of the 成分s are fresh.
Rather than a 予算 meal to 耐える, it's one to enjoy ? and one that I'll make again.

KIDS' HOT DOG HOTPOT?
In a somewhat desperate 試みる/企てる to try and get the kids to eat at least one of the canned food meals, I 明らかにする a recipe for an '平易な' hot dog casserole.
However, there's no canned pasta, no canned onions and no canned cheese. I 恐れる my adaptation is going to be a bit of a struggle.
I decide that I will cheat - ever so わずかに - with a ぱらぱら雨ing of cheese on 最高の,を越す of my 疑わしい 申し込む/申し出ing.

Mieka cheats わずかに with her hot dog hotpot by ぱらぱら雨ing cheese on 最高の,を越す - but it doesn't help 事柄s as this dish from canned 成分s is the worst of the three
I slice the potatoesm 同様に as the hot dog sausages, and place into a casserole dish. However, when I read that the sausages are 現実に made from some 肉親,親類d of 改革(する)d chicken, I gag a little. Yuck.
To 追加する a bit of moisture to the dish, I use a canned tomato soup and then ぱらぱら雨 my cheese before popping into the oven for 20 minutes (praying it magically morphs int o something not やめる so 悲劇の).
I had planned to pop in some canned mushrooms ? for at least some 肉親,親類d of nutritional value ? but feel 確かな it would have just made it even more grim; and that's 説 something.

The tinned hot dog sausages Mieka used for her casserole dish were 現実に made from 改革(する)d chicken. The finished dish cost just 35p a 長,率いる - but Mieka won't be making it again after 率ing it 12 out of 20
When I take it out it looks tasty in a way that might 控訴,上告 to a massively hungover student. But even on a bit of a '扱う/治療する night' it's not something that I'd be serving up to my little ones ? or anyone really.
However... Surprise, surprise. The について言及する of hot dogs piques my little boy George's 利益/興味 and he digs in to taste one. But it's not up to his usual hot dog 基準, it seems.
I feel a bit crestfallen at the 絶対の mess-up that was hot dog hotpot. But although I certify it as 全く inedible, Chris reckons it's not - but 収容する/認めるs he couldn't stretch to eating the sausages.
One again, he knows ? as would anyone who'd ever tasted food ? that it had all come from a can. The 判決??絶対 horrible.
VERDICT
I didn't feel 完全に 確信して that I could pull this off.
And I suppose I didn't - Chris 正確に guessing that all three meals were made 完全に from canned goods, にもかかわらず me 最初 主張するing at least one hadn't been to throw him off the scent.
But, にもかかわらず not fooling him, the 実験 will have an 衝撃 on how I cook family meals.

Mieka's husband Christopher, pictured here with daughter Harriet and son George, guessed 正確に that all three meals were made from tinned 成分s
Both the fish cakes and the hash are definitely meals that I will 追加する to my repertoire - but not before 追加するing a few 非,不,無-canned tweaks.?Fresh onions would have 利益d both dishes, for example.
However, the last meal (if you can even call it that) was proof that 試みる/企てるing to make meals 完全に out of canned foods can also be impractical, unhealthy and unequivocally unappetising - 特に if someone with very little experience has thrown it together.
Leftovers, anyone?

Mieka will 追加する two of the three dishes she cooked using just tinned 成分s to her repertoire - but will 追加する fresh onions next time
EXPERT'S VERDICT
Dietitian and public health nutritionist for Fuse and Durham University, Amelia Ashwell Lake, argues that canned food can be a 価値のある 在庫/株 cupboard 資源.
