Some over-65s need protein drinks to build up muscle 集まり lost through ageing, 熟考する/考慮する finds
- The 全世界の protein market?is 始める,決める to be 価値(がある) £25billion by 2028, 人物/姿/数字s show
Once the 保存する of bodybuilders wanting to 本体,大部分/ばら積みの up, protein shakes have recently grown in 人気 ― even の中で those who will never see the inside of a gym.
人物/姿/数字s 解放(する)d in May showed that the 全世界の protein market would be 価値(がある) £25billion by 2028 ― up from £16billion in 2021, while in the UK, 7 per cent of Britons ― and 39 per cent of those who 演習d more than a once a week ― used sport 栄養 製品s such as protein shakes, によれば Mintel 研究 in 2017.
Some use these 製品s in the belief that they will help build muscle (although 専門家s say they won’t do this without 演習), others as a way to 改善する their diet. But questions hang over them: how much 利益 do they really bring, for instance, and should they carry a health 警告?
This was the suggestion raised by a 検死官 during the 最近の 検死 into the death of Rohan Godhania, 16, from Ealing, West London. He fell ill after drinking a protein shake on August 15, 2020, and tragically died three days later having 苦しむd ‘irreversible brain 損失’.
The shake brought on a rare genetic 条件, ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) 欠陥/不足, which 妨げるs the bre akdown of ammonia (a by-製品 of the 決裂/故障 of protein). This 原因(となる)s the ammonia to build up to lethal levels in the bloodstream, 主要な to brain swelling.

検死官 Tom Osborne told the 検死: ‘My 予選 見解(をとる) about them is that I せねばならない 令状 to one of the regulatory 当局 that some sort of 警告 せねばならない be put on the 一括ing of these drinks because, although OTC is a rare 条件, it can have harmful 影響s if someone drinks [one].’
There is little 疑問 that protein is 決定的な for good health. The 団体/死体 breaks it 負かす/撃墜する into the amino 酸性のs needed to build muscles and 独房s.
Protein is also 必須の for the smooth working of the 免疫の system. But it is readily 利用できる in many foods and most people get enough (men need around 56g p er day; and women, around 46g per day), 含むing vegetarians and vegans. As an example, there’s around 34g of protein in a 140g 部分 of farmed salmon, 5.7g in 100g of Greek yoghurt, 加える 28g in 100g tin of マグロ.
Protein 砕くs ― which you mix with milk or water ― or the ready-to-drink 見解/翻訳/版s typically 含む/封じ込める 20-30g protein per serving. Many also 含む/封じ込める creatine, a 補足(する) that can 上げる 業績/成果 and 増加する muscle 集まり by encouraging water uptake into muscles, 同様に as ビタミンs, minerals and flavourings.
While it is always より望ましい to get nutrients from food, protein shakes do have their uses, によれば dietitian Priya Tew.
‘Protein shakes can be useful for those who are 演習ing a lot, such as professional 競技者s and those with extra protein needs, 含むing those with poor appetite or who are fighting off illness,’ she says. Another group who may 利益 from them is the over-65s, as 熟考する/考慮するs such as one by the University of Sheffield in 2020 示唆する as many as 85 per cent don’t get enough protein.
‘We often see a 拒絶する/低下する in muscle 集まり and strength as people age which can 衝撃 their physical 機能(する)/行事 and 影響する/感情 their health, says Marcela Fiuza, a specialist dietitian in metabolic health and ageing. ‘While many older people can get 適する 量s of protein in their diet, there are some who struggle. A lot of older people, 特に over-70s, don’t 消費する the 最小限 protein 必要物/必要条件s, so a protein 補足(する) can be helpful.’
Indeed, the dietary protein needs for older people have recently been 改訂するd 上向きs by the Prot-Age 熟考する/考慮する Group, an international organisation 任命するd by the European Union of Geriatric 薬/医学 Society.
The new 推薦s are that さもなければ healthy people over the age of 65 should now get 1-1.2g of protein per キロ of 団体/死体 負わせる; this might be higher for people who are ill.
But can you have too much of a good thing?
‘Protein is a コンビナート/複合体 分子,’ says Linia Patel, a specialist sports dietitian based in London and a spokesperson for the British Dietetic 協会.
This was the suggestion raised by a 検死官 during the 最近の 検死 into the death of Rohan Godhania (centre), 16, from Ealing, West London
‘So in order for the 団体/死体 to break it 負かす/撃墜する into amino 酸性のs, your 肝臓 and 腎臓s have to do lots of work.
‘That’s no problem if you have a healthy 肝臓 and 腎臓s but it could 原因(となる) problems if you を煩う 肝臓 or 腎臓 病気. You may need to 限界 your protein intake to 妨げる 損失 to these 組織/臓器s.’
Those who do choose to take protein shakes have many to choose from which 変化させる in 質 and price ― and 成分s.
Some have high levels of protein, sugar and salt, 同様に as a 範囲 of additives 含むing preservatives. ‘As a general 支配する, 選ぶ for 製品s with 極小の 成分s,’ says Linia Patel.
‘Ideally, you should also be choosing a protein 砕く that has いっそう少なく than 5g of sugar per serving [特に if your goal is fat loss or better 全体にわたる health],’ she says. ‘I am a big fan of unflavoured protein 砕くs as they don’t come with 追加するd sugar or sweeteners.’
