High street pharmacies are on the 'brink' of Êø²õ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë, a damning Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬ into the? 'ÈãȽŪ¤Ê' °µÎÏs teams ľÌ̤¹¤ë »ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ëd today.?
The England-wide Ä´ºº¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë on staffing and °Õµ¤¹þ¤ß¡¿»Îµ¤ in the ÉôÌç has ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë 9 in 10 team members are struggling to Âн褹¤ë with workload ¼ûÍס¦Í׵᤹¤ës.?
Seven in 10 pharmacy owners also Äê´üŪ¤Ë Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬ staff ÉÔÂs, with a tenth ·³Ââd to ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ë °ì»þŪ¤Ë, ¤Ë¤è¤ì¤Ð the Ä´ºº¤¹¤ë by »º¶È ÃÄÂΡ¿»àÂÎ Community Pharmacy England (CPE).??
One owner told MailOnline how he's been so °µÅݤ¹¤ëd he hasn't been able to take a day off in over three years.
Even then, the last break he had was a Áª¤Ó½Ð¤¹¡¿ÆÈ¿È day for the funeral of his 23-year-old son.?
Others has been ¶¯½±¡¤¶¯´¯d, with È¿ÂФ¹¤ës thrown at them or even punched ¤Þ¤Ã¤¿¤ÀÃæ¤Ë rising levels of ´µ¼Ô ¿¯Î¬, with ½ÐÍè»ö/»ö·ïs logged almost every week.?
One owner, Anil Sharma (pictured), told MailOnline he?has been ¶¯½±¡¤¶¯´¯d, punched and? had È¿ÂФ¹¤ës thrown at him ¤Þ¤Ã¤¿¤ÀÃæ¤Ë rising levels of ´µ¼Ô ¿¯Î¬, with ½ÐÍè»ö/»ö·ïs logged almost every week
The England-wide Ä´ºº¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë on staffing and °Õµ¤¹þ¤ß¡¿»Îµ¤ in the ÉôÌç has ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë nine in ten team members are struggling to Âн褹¤ë with workload ¼ûÍס¦Í׵᤹¤ës?
The scathing Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬ comes after it was ÌÀ¤é¤«¤Ë¤¹¤ë¡¿Ï³¤é¤¹d number of pharmacies in England is now at the lowest level in almost 20 years, with an ÉáÄ̤Ρ¿Ê¿¶Ñ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of seven of these ·èÄêŪ¤Ê services ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ëing every week.
There are ¶²¤ì¤ës workplace °µÎÏs and ¿¯Î¬ from ¼ºË¾¤µ¤»¤ëd ´µ¼Ôs could Äɲ乤ë to this ·¹¸þ, Ͷȯ¤¹¤ëing a »ÙÇÛ ±Æ¶Á as remaining pharmacies have to Áª¤Ö up the slack.??
»º¶È leaders labelled the findings '¿¼¤¯¡¤¶¯Îõ¤Ë ´Ø¿´ing' and called on the À¯ÉÜ to ¶ÛµÞ¤Ë ±éÀâ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿½»½ê the ÉôÌç's Á´Ï«Æ¯¿Í¸ý ÉÔÂs and 'ÈãȽŪ¤Ê ´ð¶âing ¶¯À©s'.?
The Pharmacy °µÎÏs Ä´ºº¤¹¤ë for England, Åêɼd more than 900 owners ¡½ Âåɽ¤¹¤ëing more than 6,100 individual Á°Äós in England ¡½ ƱÍͤË? as 2,000 staff.
More than three £´È¾´ü/4ʬ¤Î1s ǧ¤á¤ë the °µÎÏs of their work had ±Æ¶Á¤¹¤ë¡¿´¶¾ðd their mental health.?
More than eight in 10 (86 per cent) said staff ÉÔÂs had resulted in longer waiting times for ´µ¼Ôs getting °åÌô or advice.?
Almost two thirds (62 per cent) also Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬d a Á´Ï«Æ¯¿Í¸ý ÉÔ¡ʹâ¡Ë meant they had also been ·³Ââd to ¸º¤º¤ë the services they ¿½¤·¹þ¤à¡¿¿½¤·½Ð.?
'Community pharmacy staffing °µÎÏs and °Õµ¤¹þ¤ß¡¿»Îµ¤ have reached an ¤«¤Ä¤Æ¤Ê¤¤ low. This is ²¡¤·¿Ê¤á¤ëing ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ös to the brink,' the Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬ ·ëÏÀ¤¹¤ëd.?
One ƿ̾¤Î¡¿ÉÔÌÀ¤Î owner, who has run his pharmacy in Rotherham for seven years, told MailOnline he has only taken one day off this year ¡½ his mother's funeral earlier this month.?
Tragically, the 59-year-old's last day off was in 2021?¡½ the day of his 23-year-old son's funeral.?
On both occasions, he said, he couldn't afford to even take bereavement leave, unable to »Ùʧ¤¦¡¿Ä¶â the high Ψs ¼ûÍס¦Í׵᤹¤ëd by locums.?
He told MailOnline: 'I just want something ÌÔÎõ¤Ë to change. I ¹Á¡¿ÈòÆñ½ê¡Çt even had time to grieve for my son. I¡Çm just on a constant treadmill.?
'I would just love one good night¡Çs sleep, I¡Çd really love that.?
He Äɲ乤ëd: 'I¡Çve had to bounce our costs around on different credit cards to stay afloat. I¡Çve got ¡ ò25,000 ²ÁÃ͡ʤ¬¤¢¤ë¡Ë of ÉéºÄ.?
'¤Ë¤â¤«¤«¤ï¤é¤º things ¸ºß as bad as they are now, there seems to be no Ä´°õ¤¹¤ë of it getting any better.
Anil Sharma (pictured), who runs eight pharmacies across Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Suffolk, said his teams experience this ÍðÍÑ almost every week, but rarely is it Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬d to the police
'I have thought about ½ª·ë but I want to be in a position where my ÂßÉÕ¶âs were paid off before I did that.'
Pharmacy owners are ¸½ºß¡¿°ìÈÌ¤Ë Â¸ºß Åêɼ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ëd by the ¹ñ²È¤Î Pharmacy ¶¨²ñ (NPA) over ²ÄǽÀ¤Î¤¢¤ë 'work-to-»ÙÇÛ¤¹¤ë' ³èư¡¿ÀïÆ® ¤Þ¤Ã¤¿¤ÀÃæ¤Ë a Îó¡¿Á椰¡¿Áûư over ´ð¶âing with the À¯ÉÜ.
Áªµó±¿Æ°¼Ôs say the ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î problems started with the new ¹ñ²È¤Î ·ÀÌó in 2015 ¡½ which ¸ú²ÌŪ¤Ë ºï¸º¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë pharmacies' NHS income °ÕÌ£¤¢¤ê¤²¤Ë and has not been adjusted for ¥¤¥ó¥Õ¥ì¡¼¥·¥ç¥ó or spiralling staff and dzÎÁ expenses.?
The NPA is not a Ëǰסʤ¹¤ë¡Ë union, so any ·ë²Ì of the Åêɼ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë would be ¡Êa¡ËÃé¹ð¤Î¡¿¡Ên¡Ë·ÙÊó.?
But if »Ù±ç¤¹¤ëd, the NPA says the ³èư¡¿ÀïÆ® ¡½ »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë to start before Christmas?¡½ could see pharmacies ³«»Ï for shorter hours or ÀøºßŪ¤Ë ¶¡µë¤¹¤ë ¤è¤ê¾®¿ô¤Î services such as ¶ÛµÞ contraception or ¿È¤ò°ú¤¯ing ²òÊü¤¹¤ë¡¿¼«Í³¤Ê ÇÛã¡¿±éÀâ¡¿½Ð»ºs for °åÌô.?
Yet the ƿ̾¤Î¡¿ÉÔÌÀ¤Î owner told MailOnline he could not afford to »²²Ã¤¹¤ë any ³èư¡¿ÀïÆ®.?
'I can't get by as it is, I can't my income Íî¤Á¤ë in any any ¤½¤Î¾å¤Î,' he said.?
'Pharmacies are way É餫¤¹¡¿·âÄƤ¹¤ë the ¤Ä¤Ä¤¯¡¿¥Ú¥Ã¥¯ing order. We're not even considered important.'???
Another pharmacy owner, °ìÊý¡¿¹ç´Ö, told how he has been ¶¯½±¡¤¶¯´¯d, punched and ev en had °åÌô ÉÓ¡¿Éõ¤¸¹þ¤á¤ës thrown at him ¤Þ¤Ã¤¿¤ÀÃæ¤Ë rising levels of ´µ¼Ô ¿¯Î¬.?
Anil Sharma, who runs eight pharmacies across Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and? Suffolk, said his teams experience? ÍðÍÑ almost every week.
He told MailOnline: 'We¡Çve had two ½ÐÍè»ö/»ö·ïs in the past fortnight alone.
'Mostly it¡Çs people annoyed that their °åÌô is not ready.?
'Ìô¡¿°å³Øs aren¡Çt ready for so many ¿äÏÀ¤¹¤ë¡¿Íýͳs ¡½ you can¡Çt get a ËãÌô or you¡Çre a week behind with dispensing prescriptions because you¡Çve had so many of your staff members leave.
'But people don¡Çt care if they¡Çre ill. They want their °åÌô. We've stopped ¤È¤¸¹þ¤ß¡¿Äó½Ð¤¹¤ëing ½ÐÍè»ö/»ö·ïs to the police.
He explained this was ͽÄê to both the paperwork ȼ¤¦¡¿´Ø¤ï¤ëd and a ·çÇ¡¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of results.??
'We don't have time and we don't take ´µ¼Ôs to Ë¡ÄºÛȽ½ê because they're ´µ¼Ôs, they're ill.'?
µÏ¿¡¤µÏ¿Åª¤Ê¡¿µÏ¿¤¹¤ë levels of staff ÉÔÂs, that have seen him unable to ¿·ºÎÍѤ¹¤ë trained staff for over 18 months, have also seen Mr Sharma and his wife have to work ¡Æ100 hours a week each, ¤¤¤Ä¤«s ÌëÄ̤·¡Ç to ³Î¼Â¤Ë¤¹¤ë the ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ö keeps going.?
He said: 'The pharmacy Á´Ï«Æ¯¿Í¸ý has been decimated to an Á°Îã¤Î¤Ê¤¤ level.
NHS ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ö Services Åö¶É data published in October shows in England just 11,414 community pharmacies remained in the 2022/23 ºâÀ¯¾å¤Î year
'I¡Çve been in pharmacy for 25 years and I¡Çve never known °µÎÏ like this. It¡Çs a perfect Íò¡¿½±·â¤¹¤ë. It¡Çs a ¹ñ²È¤Î ¥¹¥¥ã¥ó¥À¥ë.
'There have been weeks where we've worked through the night to try and keep up to date with the dispensing, so people were waiting too long.
'ºÇ½ªÅª¤Ë it's our ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ö. We put our life Ãù¶â into these ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ös and if we can't keep them afloat, and all the ´µ¼Ôs leave us, then we have no ¾¦Çä¡¿»Å»ö left.
'It's had a Â絬ÌÏ¤Ê ¾×·â on my life.'
Åú¤¨¤ë¡¿±þ¤¸¤ëing to the Ä´ºº¤¹¤ë results, Janet Morrison, Ĺ¡¤»ØƳ¼Ô (n)Ìò°÷¡¿(a)¼¹¹ÔÎϤΤ¢¤ë of CPE, said: 'We are ¿¼¤¯¡¤¶¯Îõ¤Ë ´Ø¿´d about staff wellbeing and the ¾Ã¶ËŪ¤Ê ¾×·â that the ¸½ºß¤Î °µÎÏs are having on both the mental health of the community pharmacy Á´Ï«Æ¯¿Í¸ý and on ´µ¼Ô care.?
'Community pharmacy teams are working Èó¡¤ÉÔ¡¤Ìµ-stop to Êݸ¤ë their ´µ¼Ôs and Ãϸµ¤Î communities, but a Á´Ï«Æ¯¿Í¸ý that is Íî¤Á¤ëing over does not support the ÇÛã¡¿±éÀâ¡¿½Ð»º of ¼Á ´µ¼Ô care.?
'If pharmacy staff are overworked, understaffed, Ǻ¤Þ¤¹d and ľÌ̤¹¤ëing ½ÅÍ×¤Ê ¶¯Ä´¤¹¤ë¡¿¥¹¥È¥ì¥¹, it negatively ±Æ¶Á¤¹¤ë¡¿´¶¾ðs their ability to ²ñ¹ç¡¤²ñ¤¦ ´µ¼Ô needs.
'If we want to make ½½Ê¬¤Ê use of the Î×¾²¤Î µ»½Ñs of community pharmacists and their teams, we must ±éÀâ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿½»½ê these Á´Ï«Æ¯¿Í¸ý ÉÔÂs, ƱÍÍ¤Ë as the ÈãȽŪ¤Ê ´ð¶âing ¶¯À©s and capacity ÌäÂ꡿ȯ¹Ô¤¹¤ës, in the ÉôÌç.'

Paul Rees, ÂçÅýÎÎ of the NPA also told this website: 'This Êó¹ð¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿²±Â¬ rightly ºÇ¹âĬ¤Î¾ìÌÌs the ½ÅÍ×¤Ê workload and Á´Ï«Æ¯¿Í¸ý challenges ľÌ̤¹¤ëing community pharmacy ͽÄê to the ¾×·â of a £±£°Ç¯´Ö of underfunding.
'Pharmacies are having to manage ½ÅÍ×¤Ê higher workloads ͽÄê to Áý²Ã¤¹¤ëd ¼ûÍס¦Í׵᤹¤ë at the same time as navigating ºï¸º¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ës to ´ð¶âing and difficulties in ¿·ºÎÍѤ¹¤ëing.
'This is ²¡¤·¿Ê¤á¤ëing many to the brink, with a µÏ¿¡¤µÏ¿Åª¤Ê¡¿µÏ¿¤¹¤ë number of pharmacies ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ëing just in the last year and others taking ·ãÎõ¤Ê steps to stay open.
'To ±éÀâ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿½»½ê this, the À¯ÉÜ must ¶¡µë¤¹¤ë community pharmacy with a new ´ð¶âing ¼è°ú¡¤¶¨Äê that Ää»ß¡Ê¤µ¤»¤ë¡Ës the ½ª·ës and µö¤¹s pharmacies to Âн褹¤ë with Áý²Ã¤¹¤ës in ¼ûÍס¦Í׵᤹¤ë.'
In August, the NPA also ·Ù¹ð¤¹¤ëd the number of pharmacies in England was now at the lowest level in almost 20 years, with an ÉáÄ̤Ρ¿Ê¿¶Ñ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of seven ¤Î¶á¤¯¤Ëing every week.
More than 1,500 have shut their doors since 2015, leaving just 10,054 open.?
At this Ψ, numbers could Íî¤Á¤ë below 10,000 for the first time since 2005, when there were 9,872, it said.?
