I'd 喜んで take a smoker's 肺s and 危険 癌 - to end the hell of life on the waiting 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)
- Cystic Fibrosis 苦しんでいる人 Poppy Roberts would rather take a smoker's 肺s
- The 23-year-old has been waiting for new 肺s for two years
- Poppy spends two weeks a month in hospital receiving 抗生物質s
- Takes more than 60 医薬s a day, and sleeps with an oxygen mask
IT IS a stark choice: whether to 苦しむ the agonies of the 肺 病気 cystic fibrosis, or 危険 getting 癌 after 受託するing a 寄贈者 肺 from a 激しい smoker.
As The Mail on Sunday 明らかにする/漏らすd last week, doctors want the 肺s of such smokers to be 申し込む/申し出d more 広範囲にわたって to 移植(する) 患者s in a 企て,努力,提案 to 上げる the number of lifesaving 操作/手術s taking place. 現在/一般に, a third of those on the waiting 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) die before 組織/臓器s become 利用できる.
The Cystic Fibrosis 信用 (CFT) argues that にもかかわらず the 癌? 危険, cystic fibrosis 苦しんでいる人s should be given the 選択 of having ‘reconditioned’ 組織/臓器s, which could? come from a smoker or those with other 病気s.
DesperateL Cystic Fibrosis 苦しんでいる人 Poppy Roberts, 23, from Monmouth would rather 危険 with smoker's 肺s after waiting for two years for a 移植(する)
And one CF 患者, Poppy Roberts, is certainly willing to take the 危険 ? because for the 23-year-old, time is running out. The 普通の/平均(する) life 見込み for someone put on the 肺 移植(する) 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) is two years ? the exact time Poppy has been waiting.
‘I’d rather 危険 肺 癌 in five years’ time than stay in my 現在の 状況/情勢,’ she says. ‘I can’t afford to be fussy. I don’t know how long I’ve got left ? it could be six months.’
Poppy, who dreams of a career in fashion, 現在/一般に spends two weeks of every month in hospital receiving intravenous 抗生物質s to 停止(させる) the 感染s attacking her 団体/死体. She? is also reliant on more than 60 different 医薬s a day, and needs to sleep with an oxygen mask at night to help her breathe.
‘権利 now, I don’t have a life,’? says Poppy, from Monmouth. ‘If smokers’ 肺s would give me a? half decent life for a while, I would take them. On bad days it feels as? if I’m 溺死するing as I’m 絶えず gasping for breath.
‘I’m dying but there is a chance I could live longer with a smoker’s 肺s. Isn’t that what life’s about, taking a chance?’
In 2012, 188 肺 移植(する)s were carried out. Yet at any one time there are about 240 people waiting for such an 操作/手術. 最近の 開発s in techniques, いつかs dubbed ‘washing’, mean that today just over a third of 肺 移植(する)s come from 患者s who smoked.
Doctors believe that if 支配するs were relaxed その上の, up to 100 more 肺s a year would become 利用できる. These would be from groups 指定するd ‘sub-optimal’ ? not considered good enough to 寄付する.
選挙運動者s also want the 支配するs regarding age 限界s for 寄贈者s erased, and for 肺s from those with pre-存在するing 医療の 条件s such as 喘息, 糖尿病 and even 肝炎 to be considered viable.
‘ありふれた sense 示唆するs that 肺s from a 寄贈者 who smoked can’t be very healthy, but 熟考する/考慮するs have shown that three-year 生き残り 率s に引き続いて a 肺 移植(する) are 影響を受けない by whether or not the 寄贈者 was a smoker,’ says Andrew Fisher, Professor of Respiratory 移植(する) 薬/医学 at Newcastle University.
‘Some 危険 continues to 存在する, such as 開発 of 肺 癌 in the 寄贈者 肺 of a smoker. Tiny 癌s are not 明白な on 査察 so there is a small chanc e that such a 癌 could be 移植(する)d with the 寄贈者 肺. But this is a very rare occurrence.’
寄付, 寄付: The 普通の/平均(する) waiting 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) for new 肺s is two years
The 普通の/平均(する) 生き残り after a 肺 移植(する) is six years. ‘It is more important to get a 移植(する) 成し遂げるd than worry about 可能性のある 危険s that may or may not happen? 15 years later,’ 追加するs Prof Fisher.
In August 2012, there was shock at the 肺 癌 death of Jennifer Wederell, a 27-year-old CF 患者.
Sixteen months earlier she had undergone a 肺 移植(する) ? she later 設立する out that the 寄贈者 had smoked 20 cigarettes a day throughout their life.
Her widower David, 29, says: ‘We got the 破滅的な news of the 癌 diagnosis in March 2012. Almost as an afterthought, the 顧問 明らかにする/漏らすd that her 肺 寄贈者 had been a smoker. We were incredulous that this hadn’t been について言及するd before her 移植(する).’
にもかかわらず what happened, David still believes other CF 患者s should be given the choice of 受託するing a smoker’s 肺s.
‘I support the CFT in its 追求(する),探索(する) for 延長するd 基準 to 増加する the number of 寄贈者s. But we have to 確実にする the 移植(する) 過程 is transparent. Someone else might have 受託するd a smoker’s 肺s? for a chance of life, but Jennifer wouldn’t have 危険d it.’
Although the number of 患者s 要求するing 移植(する)s 増加するs every year, the 基準 for deciding whether 肺s are suitable for 操作/手術s has changed little in 30 years. 現在/一般に only 20 per cent of the 寄贈者 肺s 利用できる in the UK are used for 移植(する).
‘We don’t try to 説得する someone to take a smoker’s 肺s, but we 申し込む/申し出 them a balanced 見解(をとる) of any 危険s and 許す them to make the 決定/判定勝ち(する),’ says Prof Fisher.
Jennifer was never 許すd that choice and the hospital that 扱う/治療するd her, Harefield, has since apologised and 改訂するd its 政策 on 知らせるing 患者s about the 危険s of 癌.
All 寄贈者 肺s are carefully 査定する/(税金などを)課すd によれば 基準 指導/手引 始める,決める by the International Society for Heart and 肺 Transplantation (ISHLT). 外科医s look at how 井戸/弁護士席 oxygen is getting in to the 血, and carry out a chest X-ray to check for 調印するs of 感染.
During a 寄贈者 操作/手術, they are able to carry out a visual 査定/評価 of the 肺s and (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) about the 寄贈者’s smoking history is always collected from the next of 肉親,親類 by a specialist nurse. ISHLT 支配するs say that 寄贈者s should have smoked no more than one packet? of cigarettes a day for 20 years. Anyone one who has smoked for more than 20 years 落ちるs into the 部類 of a ‘ごくわずかの’ 寄贈者.
A technique called Ex Vivo 肺 Perfusion, which 大(公)使館員s the 肺s to a ventilator that 供給(する)s oxygen and mimics breathing and pumps them with a nutrient fluid, 許すs doctors to その上の 査定する/(税金などを)課す the 業績/成果 of the 肺s.
For Poppy, any 始める,決める of 寄贈者 肺s is better than 非,不,無 at all. ‘Until you are on the waiting 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) you cannot picture what it’s like,’ she says.
‘Given a choice between not having a 移植(する) or receiving the 肺s of a smoker, I’d take my chance for a better life rather than live like this.’
