New ultrasound images show how babies of mothers who smoke during pregnancy touch their mouths and 直面するs much more than babies of 非，不，無-smoking mothers.

Doctors have long 勧めるd 妊娠している women to give up cigarettes because they 高くする，増す the 危険 of premature birth, respiratory problems and even cot death.

Now 研究員s believe they can show the 影響s of smoking on babies in the womb - and use the images to encourage mothers who are struggling to give up.

Image shows the 4-D ultrasound ざっと目を通す of two foetuses at 32 weeks gestation, one whose mother was a smoker (最高の，を越す) and the other carried by a 非，不，無-smoker (底（に届く）). The foetus carried by the smoker touches its 直面する and mouth much more, 示すing its 開発 is 延期するd

As part of the 熟考する／考慮する, Dr Nadja Reissland, of Durham University, used 4-D ultrasound ざっと目を通す images to 記録，記録的な／記録する thousands of tiny movements in the womb.

She 監視するd 20 mothers …に出席するing the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, four of whom smoked an 普通の／平均（する） of 14 cigarettes a day.

After 熟考する／考慮するing their ざっと目を通すs at 24, 28, 32 and 36 weeks, she （悪事，秘密などを）発見するd that foetuses whose mothers smoked continued to show 意味ありげに higher 率s of mouth movement and self-touching than those carried by 非，不，無-smokers.

Foetuses usually move their mouths and touch themselves いっそう少なく as they 伸び（る） more 支配（する）／統制する the closer they get to birth, she explained.

The 操縦する 熟考する／考慮する, which Dr Reissland hopes to 拡大する with a bigger 見本, 設立する babies carried by smoking mothers may have 延期するd 開発 of the central nervous system.

Dr Reissland said: 'A larger 熟考する／考慮する is needed to 確認する these results and to 調査／捜査する 明確な／細部 影響s, 含むing the interaction of maternal 強調する／ストレス and smoking.'

She believed that ビデオs of the difference in pre-birth 開発 could help mothers give up smoking.

But she was against demonising mothers and called for more support for them to give up.

現在／一般に, 12 per cent of 妊娠している women in the UK smoke but the 率 is over 20 per cent in 確かな areas in the North East.

All the babies in her 熟考する／考慮する were born healthy, and were of normal size and 負わせる.

Dr Reissland, who has an 専門的知識 in 熟考する／考慮するing foetal 開発, thanked the mothers who took part in her 熟考する／考慮する, 特に those who smoked.

'I'm really 感謝する, they did a good thing,' she said. 'These are speci al people and they overcame the stigma to help others.'
