As hundreds of Britons die needlessly from melanomas every year... Why are so many deadly 肌 癌s caught late?

Just a few weeks before their marriage in July 1999, Terry and Joann Wheeldon each 調書をとる／予約するd six 開会／開廷／会期s on a sunbed, ‘to get a bit of colour for our wedding’.
It was a 決定／判定勝ち（する） that would have 破滅的な consequences for the couple and their two daughters.
‘Terry never used sunbeds 普通は, or even went in the sun,’ 解任するs Joann.
He stopped after his fourth 開会／開廷／会期 when he noticed a red blister on his stomach.?

His GP said it was nothing to worry about, but in fact it was the first 調印する of a malignant melanoma ― a deadly 肌 癌 that is easily cured if caught 早期に.
Oblivious to this, the couple, from Prestwich, Manchester, got on with their lives and raising their daughters, Morgan and Demi.?
Terry worked as a forklift トラックで運ぶ driver, while Joann, a school dinner lady, 熟考する／考慮するd to become a teaching assistant.
But Terry’s blister never went away, and over the next five years it slowly turned into a small brown mole. He went 支援する to the doctor on several occasions, but each time was told it was 罰金.
By June 2005, the mole ― now larger, misshapen and darker in colour ― had started to itch.?
Finally, Terry was referred to a dermatologist, who ordered a 生体検査.
It was five months before the 生体検査 was carried out. Then （機の）カム the shocking news that it was a malignant melanoma.
An 操作／手術 to 除去する and 実験（する） more tissue appeared to show that the melanoma had been caught in time.
But four years later, in April 2010, Terry spotted a pea-sized lump 近づく the 場所／位置 of his 初めの mole and a CT ざっと目を通す 明らかにする／漏らすd seven small tumours in his 肺s.
He had just 16 months left to live. During that time, he developed tumours in his neck, armpits and groin, and by June 2011 a ざっと目を通す 設立する five in his brain.

Terry decided against having 放射線療法 to 長引かせる his life.
‘He went for 質 of life,’ says Joann. ‘It was a really 勇敢に立ち向かう 決定／判定勝ち（する）, and it was the 権利 one.?
'It was 拷問 living with that 時限爆弾, but he was so 肯定的な and 決定するd not to let melanoma 廃虚 the last months he had with his family.’
Terry 始める，決める about putting together memory boxes for his daughters, then 15 and 16, and 令状ing cards for their 18th and 21st birthdays.
Five months later, when the end （機の）カム, it was quick.?
One morning he was struck by a 厳しい 頭痛. He fell into a 昏睡 and three days later, on November 17, 2011, 48-year-old Ter ry passed away 平和的に, surrounded by loved ones.
That year, Terry was one of 1,167 men and 832 women who died from malignant melanoma.?
The 癌 forms in the melanocytes, the 独房s that produce melanin, the pigment that colours 肌.
The main 危険 factor is （危険などに）さらす to ultra-violet light, either from the sun or sunbeds, and people who are fair-skinned and have a lot of moles or freckles are in more danger.

At first, a melanoma is on the surface of the 肌 and can be easily 削減（する） out.?
But 除去 is the only cure ― which is why 早期に diagnosis is 決定的な. Caught 早期に enough, melanoma has one of the highest 生き残り 率s of all 癌s.
If a melanoma grows deeper, the cancerous 独房s can reach the bloodstream and spread to 組織／臓器s such as the lymph （分泌する為の）腺s, 肺s and brain.
Once it has spread, melanoma does not 答える／応じる 井戸／弁護士席 to chemotherapy. Some, like Terry, live with the 病気 for years. Others die frighteningly quickly.
Every year, hundreds of men and women are losing their lives needlessly to a 病気 that could have been beaten if 扱う／治療するd 早期に.
‘What is 特に depressing about melanoma is it’s all about 早期に diagnosis,’ says Chris Bower, 顧問 dermatologist at the 王室の Devon & Exeter Hospital.
‘Other 癌s you might be able to cure with 放射線療法 and chemotherapy; with melanoma you can’t,’ says Mr Bower.
So why isn’t more 存在 done to （悪事，秘密などを）発見する melanoma sooner?

In fact, last summer, Public Health England ran a six-week 操縦する （選挙などの）運動をする in the South-West that caught many 事例／患者s 十分に 早期に to save lives, Good Health has learned.?
The 重要な message of the Be （疑いを）晴らす On 癌 （選挙などの）運動をする was that ‘a change to a mole isn’t the only 調印する of 肌 癌’, and anyone who spotted ‘any unusual or 執拗な changes’ to their 肌 was 勧めるd to visit their GP.
This is a broader message than 癌 研究 UK’s 認識／意識性 （選挙などの）運動をする, which has 焦点（を合わせる）d on the ‘ABCD’ message, 製図／抽選 attention to moles that are becoming Asymmetrical, developing 不規律な 国境s, having more than one shade or Colour, or a 直径 larger than 6mm.
The new message was welcomed by 専門家s.?
‘More than 50 per cent of melanomas 現実に arise from normal 肌 and not from a mole,’ says Stephen Kownacki, a GP and 議長，司会を務める of the 最初の／主要な Care Dermatology Society.
And the message got through. ‘We saw a 限定された 増加する in the number of referrals,’ says Mr Bower, whose dermatology department at the 王室の Devon & Exeter Hospital was one of several centres in Somerset, Cornwall and Devon covered by the （選挙などの）運動をする.
During July, at the 高さ of the （選挙などの）運動をする, the number of referrals to his department rose from the usual 600 to 1,000.?
Centres in Taunton, Torbay, Barnstaple, Truro and Plymouth also experienced a 40 to 45 per cent 増加する in 緊急の referrals from GPs.
Mr Bower said it was ‘reasonable’ to 結論する that a 国家の （選挙などの）運動をする would see a 類似の 増加する in referrals ― and lives saved.?
‘Three years on, we still find it hard to go to Terry’s 残り／休憩（する）ing place knowing that if he had not used a sunbed, or if his mole had been 除去するd at the beginning, he would still be here,’ said Joann

The British 協会 of Dermatologists (BAD) says the profession is so woefully understaffed that dermatology centres would be 圧倒するd.
‘We have a 国家の 全労働人口 危機,’ says David Eedy, 大統領，／社長 of the 協会 and a 顧問 dermatologist at Craigavon Area Hospital in Northern Ireland.
It is 概算の there are around 740 dermatology 顧問s 国家的に, compared with the 900 最小限 recommended by the 王室の College of 内科医s.
It’s not that there aren’t 十分な 医療の 卒業生（する）s who want to go into dermatology ― there are seven applicants for every 訓練生 地位，任命する.
But the number of training places for each speciality is 直す／買収する，八百長をするd 毎年 by Health Education England and, says Mr Eedy, dermatology is a neglected specialty, 押し進めるd aside in favour of more 政治上 極度の慎重さを要する 問題／発行するs, such as the need for more GPs.
A 報告（する）／憶測 last year by the 王室の College of 内科医s 公式文書，認めるd that ‘despit e 存在 a popular specialty, with high 需要・要求する for training places’, only 55 per cent of advertised dermatology 顧問 地位，任命するs had been filled in 2013-14, ‘予定 to the 不足 of 訓練生s’.
If the 操縦する were rolled out across the country, says Mr Eedy, ‘my reaction would have to be, 井戸／弁護士席, we welcome anything that stops people 存在 killed.?
'I wouldn’t want anyone to go through what we have been through,' said Joann
'But at the 支援する of my mind I’d be thinking, please give me the 全労働人口 to do it because there aren’t enough of us.’
The extent of the staffing 危機 was brought home to Dame Sally Davies, the 長，指導者 医療の Officer, when she ran a セミナー for dermatologists in October 2013.
In a letter seen by Good Health, Dame Sally wrote to tell Ian Cumming, 長，指導者 (n)役員／(a)執行力のある of Health Education England (HEE), that she was ‘horrified’ to discover ‘this is a profession in real 危機’.
< font style="font-size:1.2em">Even the recommended number of 900 顧問s, which if 達成するd would give a 割合 of one 顧問 for every 62,500 people, was hopelessly 不十分な.
‘If we really 手配中の，お尋ね者 to get this 権利,’ wrote Dame Sally, ‘we would probably have 6,000 顧問s’ ― 概略で 同等（の） to the 割合 of dermatologists to 患者s in countries such as Italy, Germany, フラン and the U.S. (フラン has one dermatologist for every 120,000 people: Britain has one for every 200,000, says the BAD.)
A 広報担当者 for Health Education England said that last year it had （売買）手数料，委託（する）／委員会／権限d 177 dermatology training places and would do so again next year.?
This would ‘continue the 普通の／平均（する） 3.5 per cent growth per 年 in the 顧問 全労働人口 in line with the 28 per cent growth in the eight years to 2013’.
But the BAD 解任するd this as ‘weasel words’, and 主張するd Health Education England had ‘continually 削減（する） numbers’.?
Indeed, HEE’s own 全労働人口 計画（する） shows it planned to 現実に 新採用する only 57 dermatologists in 2014/15.
There is no arguing with the way dermatology departments struggled to 対処する during last year’s Be （疑いを）晴らす On 癌 （選挙などの）運動をする in the South-West.?
Good Health has learned that at the 頂点（に達する） of the （選挙などの）運動をする several dermatology 部隊s were 軍隊d to の近くに their doors to all but the most serious 事例／患者s, turning away 患者s with other 肌 条件s.
（選挙などの）運動をする or no （選挙などの）運動をする, Joann Wheeldon 勧めるs anyone with the slightest 疑惑 that somethi ng might be wrong to visit their GP without 延期する.
Since Terry’s death, she has worked as a counsellor, through her own website, Life After Melanoma, and with the charity Melanoma UK, and says she is 絶えず surprised by how little people understand about the danger of 肌 癌.
‘Three years on, we still find it hard to go to Terry’s 残り／休憩（する）ing place knowing that if he had not used a sunbed, or if his mole had been 除去するd at the beginning, he would still be here,’ she says.
‘It is 破滅的な to know a mole killed my husband and robbed us of our dreams. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through what we have been through.’
