She had a tumour growing in a 胆汁 導管 in her 肝臓, although it would take another four months of going 支援する and 前へ/外へ to the doctor's before she would get a diagnosis.

'The moment they told us she had 癌, she broke 負かす/撃墜する,' says Liam, now 30.

'It was such a 抱擁する shock.

'I tried my best not to cry, too - I 手配中の,お尋ね者 to be strong for her.'

胆汁 導管 癌, or cholangiocarcinoma, is on the rise. In 2010, 1,832 people were 診断するd with it and 1,720 died from it in England. Three years later, 1,965 were 診断するd with it and 2,161 died from it.

'人物/姿/数字s are rising quickly and 意味ありげに,' says Professor Simon Taylor-Robinson, a 顧問 肝臓 specialist and 研究員 at 皇室の College, London.

'支援する in 1968, there were より小数の than 40 事例/患者s a year.

'This is not just 予定 to us getting better at 診断するing it - but we do not know why.'

Today, Liam is struggling to make sense of what happened.?

'I felt so helpless - there was this woman who I 手配中の,お尋ね者 to spend the next 40, 50 or so years with, who was now gone, and there was nothing I could do to save her.

'For three hours after she passed on, I sat there talking to her, apologising for not 存在 able to save her.'

専門家s and charities are calling for more 研究 into and for 増加するd 認識/意識性 of this silent 殺し屋 の中で both the public and 医療の profession.

The 胆汁 導管s are tiny, 支店-like tubes that connect the 肝臓 to the small intestine.

WHEN CANCER DEVELOPS?

As a tumour grows across a 導管, 胆汁 salts that would 普通は be sent to the small intestine build up in the 団体/死体 and get deposited under the 肌, 原因(となる)ing irritation and itching.

'We know that (危険などに)さらす to 確かな 化学製品s produced as a by-製品 of waste incineration may be associated with this 癌 - it has also been associated with 産業の spillage,' says Professor Taylor-Robinson.

Yet why incidences of the 癌 should be 増加するing at such a 率 remains a puzzle.

'It is becoming more ありふれた - the U.S., Japan, Australia, everywhere,' says Professor Taylor-Robinson.

Although it is most ありふれた in the over-60s, the 病気 is becoming ますます frequently seen across all age groups.

'We have heard of children as young as 12 developing it,' says Helen Morement, the 長,指導者 (n)役員/(a)執行力のある of AMMF, the cholangiocarcinoma charity. She believes greater 認識/意識性 could 改善する the prognosis for those unlucky enough to develop the 病気 - at the moment, only 5 per cent are alive five years after diagnosis.

'If people are 繰り返して coming 支援する and 前へ/外へ to the doctor feeling 一般に unwell, we would like doctors to consider 肝臓 機能(する)/行事 実験(する)s, which can help 警報 them to this 病気.'

研究 is under way to develop 血 or urine 実験(する)s that may 選ぶ up the 病気 earlier, and to 改善する imaging techniques to help 位置/汚点/見つけ出す these small tumours.

Lucy went to her GP three times about her itching 肌 before she was referred for an ultra sound.

'By then, her tummy 傷つける and her 肌 was unbearably itchy and yellow,' says Liam.

'They thought she might have 胆石s, but couldn't see anything on the ultrasound - so they referred her 支援する to the GP.'

Then, in late August, by which time she had been 解雇(する)d for taking so much time off sick, she complained of a 強化するing across the chest - referred 苦痛 from the 肝臓 as it turned out - and Liam took her to A&E at Dewsbury hospital, where they did 肝臓 機能(する)/行事 実験(する)s.

'The results were insane,' says Liam. 'Her bilirubin level was 395 - it should be 17.'

They kept her in hospital under 観察 for more than three weeks, but doctors still could not work out what was wrong.

In September, she was moved to St James's Hospital in 物陰/風下d, where she saw five different 顧問s before a ざっと目を通す showed a blockage in her left 胆汁 導管.?

Finally, in October 2013, they were told Lucy had 胆汁 導管 癌.

'I was 持つ/拘留するing her 手渡す as they talked to us, and as soon as they used the word '癌' Lucy broke 負かす/撃墜する and cried into my shoulder.'

The 癌 was too 前進するd for 外科. All they could 申し込む/申し出 was chemotherapy, which Lucy started in the first week of November.

'She was really 確信して that this would work; not once did she discuss the 可能性 of dying,' says Liam.

She and Liam got married in October 2014 - Lucy was 中途の through her chemotherapy treatament - and Liam treasures the memories of the day.

However, two days before Christmas that year, Lucy fainted and was 急ぐd 支援する to hospital in an 救急車.

She was bleeding internally because the tumour was squeezing a vein in her 肝臓. She and Liam were told there was no more they could do to stop the 癌.

'It was the worst thing I have ever heard in my life,' says Liam.

two days after Valentine's Day last year, Lucy went 支援する into hospital to have the vein bypassed, but she never woke up from the anaesthetic and died, 老年の 29, on February 20.

A year on, Liam has bad days and good days.

'No one can really empathise - but I wouldn't want people to feel the way I feel,' he says.

'I just want greater 認識/意識性 of this 病気 and to 妨げる any more people 苦しむing the way Lucy and I did.'
