Steroid jabs used to 扱う／治療する 共同の 苦痛 could be doing more 害（を与える） than good

After she wrenched her 権利 shoulder when she slipped きれいにする her にわか雨, Abigail Drummond was in pretty bad 苦痛.

'It was excruciating,' 解任するs the 60-year-old former model. An X-ray 設立する no broken bones, but when the 苦痛 固執するd, she decided to use her 私的な healthcare to have a more 詳細（に述べる）d MRI ざっと目を通す.

This showed two tendons in her shoulder were 不正に torn and another 厳しく 損失d. All the doctor 申し込む／申し出d was a steroid 注射 ― a 治療 used to 減ずる inflammation.

Yet now, six weeks after the 事故, not only has the 注射 供給するd little 救済, but Abigail has been told that she 現実に needs 外科 ― yet she has to wait because of the steroid jab.?

The 注射 may also have 減ずるd the chance of the 操作／手術 存在 successful, 同様に as 増加するing the 危険 of her developing an 感染.

'To say I was appalled would be an 絶対の understatement,' says Abigail from East London. 'My shoulder movement is so 制限するd I can't 停止する my arm or even 運動. Now I'm in a 肉親，親類d of limbo.'

Steroid 注射s are 一般的に given for chronic painful shoulders 同様に as other aches and 苦痛s such as arthritic 膝s.

The 注射s 含む／封じ込める a corticosteroid, which 減少（する）s 苦痛 by 減ずるing inflammation. While they do work for many, there is good 証拠 to show that in some circumstances they can 原因（となる） more 害（を与える） than good.

Just this month, a 熟考する／考慮する published in Arthroscopy: The 定期刊行物 of Arthroscopic & 関係のある 外科 設立する that 患者s who received 注射s 事前の to surgical 修理s to the rotator cuff ― a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder ― were more likely to を受ける 改正 外科 (repeat 外科 to 修理 an earlier 操作／手術).

This followed 研究 現在のd at a 会合 of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports 薬／医学 in New Orleans last year that 明らかにする／漏らすd those who have 注射s いっそう少なく than six months before a 修理 to the rotator cuff may have 増加するd 危険 of 改正 外科.

'The problem with steroid 注射s is that they inhibit the 独房s that can help 修理 損失d tissue and therefore may 弱める tendons and muscles,' says Tony Kochhar, a 顧問 orthopaedic 外科医 at London 橋（渡しをする） Hospital, and a professor of sports science at the University of Greenwich.?

'All of which can 妨げる 傷をいやす／和解させるing and 影響する／感情 success 率s of surgical 修理. That's why they shouldn't be 治めるd without thinking about the bigger picture.'

The steroids in the jab also 抑える the 地元の 免疫の 返答, 追加するs Professor Kochhar.

Indeed, 研究 published in the 定期刊行物 of Shoulder and 肘 外科 in 2016 設立する there was a 重要な 増加する in 地位，任命する-operative 感染 in 患者s who had a steroid 注射 three months before a shoulder arthroscopy (keyhole 外科 used to 診断する and 扱う／治療する problems with 共同のs) and arthroplasty (共同の 交替／補充).

But their use hasn't just been called into question with shoulders. A 2016 熟考する／考慮する in the 定期刊行物 of the American 医療の 協会 設立する that steroid 注射s 治めるd every three months were no better than a placebo for 緩和するing 膝 苦痛 in 患者s with osteoarthritis. Yet often these 注射s are 申し込む／申し出d before any について言及する of 外科.

'If someone needs a 膝 交替／補充 but has a steroid 注射 first, it is advisable to 延期する 外科 for six months to 減ずる the 危険 of 感染,' says Daniel Cohen, a 顧問 orthopaedic 外科医 at The 王室の Oldham Hospital and BMI The Highfield Hospital.?

'And 一般に with 外科, the longer you wait for the 操作／手術 the いっそう少なく successful the 結果.

'Steroid 注射s do have their place,' 追加するs Mr Cohen. But if, for example, someone had fallen and was in 苦痛, they shouldn't have an 注射 after 区s.

'That's because without a 徹底的な examination and appropriate 調査, such as a ざっと目を通す, a steroid 注射 may mask symptoms 要求するing surgical 介入 原因（となる）ing a 延期する in 治療 and 潜在的に 影響する／感情ing the long-称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語 結果, ' 追加するs Mr Cohen.

'The problem is these 注射s can be given too readily.'

Professor Kochhar says steroid jabs can 供給する short-称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語 anti-inflammatory 苦痛 救済 as an adjunct to physiotherapy, to help make the 演習s more achievable, or in 事例／患者s where 外科 would not be considered.

However, he says 患者s should be given the 十分な プロの／賛成のs and 反対／詐欺s, as many will understandably choose an 注射 over an 操作／手術. 'But an 注射 should not be seen as having no after-影響s.?

Many people seem to think that 'if the 注射 doesn't work I can still have 外科 with no detrimental 影響', but this is often not the 事例／患者,' he says.

Abigail now wishes she'd known more before having her steroid 注射.

It was only when she discussed her 状況／情勢 with another doctor who was 扱う／治療するing her for a 支援する problem that she was told she should have been referred to a shoulder specialist, as this 肉親，親類d of 損失 usually needs 外科.

She must now wait months for her 操作／手術 and knows the chance of it working is 減ずるd because she had the jab. 'I'm livid,' she says. 'I just don't want anyone else to think the いわゆる quick 直す／買収する，八百長をする is really what it 約束s to be.'
