This was the start of a string of suicidal thoughts that has seen the A-level student 消費するd by a 破滅的な mental health 戦う／戦い.

Just a year earlier Yael, from Edgware, North London, was put on the powerful and 一般的に 定める／命ずるd 喘息 麻薬 montelukast after 存在 診断するd with 喘息 and hayfever.

Yael's mother Le'at, 41, a graphic designer, said: 'My husband and I noticed Yael becoming more anxious. She developed a 恐れる of 会合 people, of speaking to people, and didn't want to go to school.

'She was a normal, 有望な, bubbly girl and had never shown any 調印するs of mental health problems before.'

A CUT-PRICE PILL WITH DEVASTATING EFFECTS

Over the past months, 報告（する）／憶測s in this newspaper have 明らかにする／漏らすd the shocking （死傷者）数 that montelukast is having on the mental health of hundreds of 苦しんでいる人s.

In 返答, dozens of readers have been in touch with 類似の stories about 破滅的な 味方する 影響s, which 含む hallucinations, night terrors and suicidal thoughts.

Montelukast has been 利用できる since 1998 and is given to 患者s ? 含むing children ? whose 喘息 cannot be controlled by steroid inhalers, the usual 治療.

The 麻薬, also known by the brand 指名する Singulair, 作品 by 封鎖するing 化学製品s 解放（する）d by the 団体／死体 that 原因（となる） the 航空路s to swell and constrict during an 喘息 attack.

It has been proven to save lives, and for the 大多数 of 患者s there are few, if any, 味方する 影響s. The most ありふれた is drowsiness, so for this 推論する／理由 the 薬／医学 must be taken at night before bed.

Yet a 最近の 熟考する／考慮する in the European Respiratory 定期刊行物 設立する one in eight children developed 'neuropsychiatric 逆の 麻薬 reactions' which were 'definitely or probably 関係のある' to the 麻薬.

And last week, this newspaper carried the 悲劇の story of talented rugby player and 法律 student James Burke from 物陰／風下d, who hanged himself at home in April 2017, 老年の 21, after 苦しむing years of 苦悩 and 不景気.

The 麻薬, first made by American 会社／堅い MSD, has been 利用できる since 1998. They sold it under the brand 指名する Singulair.?

As a result of the price 減少（する）, in 2016, 定める／命ずるing 監視者 the 国家の 学校／設ける for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) 問題／発行するd 指導／手引 recommending doctors 申し込む／申し出 the 麻薬 広範囲にわたって ? a move that has saved the NHS almost £50 million, with GPs and specialists only 定める／命ずるing the generic 見解／翻訳／版s, によれば 公式の／役人 人物／姿／数字s.

In 2018 there were almost three million prescriptions for the 麻薬 on the NHS in England alone.

In the US, labels on montelukast have a 警告 about mood changes. There is no 類似の 警告 on the 麻薬 in Britain but suicidal thinking, nightmares, insomnia, 苦悩, 積極的な behaviour and 不景気 are 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）d as very rare or uncommon 味方する 影響s (在庫／株 image)

However, 患者s will have 多重の prescriptions over a year, and there is no 公式の／役人 data on 正確に／まさに how many children are on montelukast.

In the US, labels on the 麻薬 carry a 警告 about mood changes.

There is no 類似の 警告 on the 麻薬 in Britain, although suicidal thinking, nightmares, insomnia, 苦悩, 積極的な behaviour and 不景気 are 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）d as very rare or uncommon 味方する 影響s in 患者 ちらしs 含む／封じ込めるd in boxes of the 薬／医学.

In the wake of our r eports, last night the 薬／医学s And Healthcare 製品s Regulatory 機関, which is 責任がある 麻薬 safety in the UK, 確認するd an update 'as a 事柄 of 優先' which will be 完全にするd in August.

The new ちらし will read: '患者s should be aware that... behaviour and mood 関係のある changes have been 報告（する）／憶測d in adults, adolescents and children with montelukast.?

If you or your child develop(s) such symptoms while taking montelukast, 協議する a doctor.'

The 団体／死体 also 確認するd there have been 654 psychiatric reactions to montelukast 報告（する）／憶測d to it by the public since 1998, 458 of which are considered 'serious', 含むing three deaths.

Dr Ian Balfour-Lynn, a 顧問 in paediatric respiratory 薬／医学 at the 王室の Brompton Hospital in London, says the mental 衝撃 of the 麻薬 is 井戸／弁護士席-known.

THE HAPPY CHILD 世界保健機構 ENDED UP SECTIONED

Annabelle Miller's stepdaughter Amelia, 18, 'is not the person she was' after 存在 定める／命ずるd montelukast two years ago for her chronic 喘息.

Annabelle, 59, an NHS 交渉者 for 製薬の companies from London, says Amelia has tried to commit 自殺 at least 15 times, has been sectioned and kicked out of two schools.

She says: 'There is no question that this is a very 効果的な 麻薬. Amel ia had terrible 喘息 and this definitely 改善するd it. But after my 有望な, happy, intelligent daughter was put on montelukast when she was 16, she progressively developed mental health problems. Our daughter has gone from 存在 a happy child to 存在 sectioned for repeated 自殺 試みる／企てるs.'

Amelia was taken off montelukast after an 試みる／企てるd overdose.

Her distraught stepmother continued: 'She has 繰り返して run away and taken overdoses, imagines dead people, hears 発言する／表明するs and becomes 積極的な and difficult to を取り引きする.'?

Annabelle wants all GPs to 警告する about the possible 味方する 影響s of montelukast before 定める／命ずるing it. She says she wasn't told.

Dr Daniel Hawcutt, a 上級の lecturer in paediatric pharmacology at the University of Liverpool, said: 'If you give montelukast to children with 喘息, you do get an 改良.

Dr Balfour-Lynn says: 'This 麻薬 can be 効果的な and important, 特に in young children who 辞退する to use inhalers or find them uncomfortable. It is the only 選択 we have. Suicidal thoughts are a known 味方する 影響 but only in very, very rare 事例／患者s. As long as parents are 警告するd about the 可能性のある 味方する 影響s, the 利益s of the 麻薬 outweigh the 危険s.'

COULD DRUG HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE BRAIN?

In 2017, Dutch 研究員s 示唆するd that the 麻薬 may, as an unintended 影響, inhibit the 生産／産物 of the brain 化学製品s serotonin and noradrenalin, both known to 影響する／感情 mood.

麻薬 専門家 Professor Simon Maxwell, at the University of Edinburgh, says: 'We know that a lot of 薬／医学s get into the brain and are associated with changes in mood, いつかs 本気で.'

There is a known link between 喘息 ? 関わりなく what 医薬 is taken ? and psychiatric illnesses.?

A review of 非常に／多数の 熟考する／考慮するs published in 2015 結論するd: 'Asthmatics may be at an 増加するd 危険 of suicidal behaviour across all ages.

'The 可能性 of 喘息 医薬s 悪化させるing suicidal behaviour is still 不明瞭な, and more 研究 is needed in this area.'

Prof Maxwell says: '不景気 and psychological problems are 公正に／かなり ありふれた. 喘息 may be linked to these problems anyway, まず第一に／本来 because it is a chronic 病気 that negatively 衝撃s ? to a greater or lesser extent ? on what would さもなければ be, in many 事例／患者s, young, active, healthy lives.'

Yael Borger, however, has no 疑問 it was the 麻薬 that 原因（となる）d her anguish. She says: 'I know the 麻薬 has had a 抱擁する 衝撃 on me. I want others to be aware of what it can do to you.'
