(頭が)ひょいと動く Willis: Nostalgia can't hide the fact Headingley needs to 解除する its game

by BOB WILLIS

Headingley 持つ/拘留するs happy memories for me, but I would have been delighted if cricket had abandoned the ground long ago.

I will be 支援する there today bathing, like everybody else, in the nostalgia of what England 達成するd against the Aussies in 1981. But we have to 直面する the 冷淡な fact that Headingley is on 裁判,公判 again.

Its status as an international 発生地 is not under 脅し, but it has to defend itself against the recurring 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s that it is the most unattractive, rowdiest and least batsman-friendly 発生地 on the country's 実験(する) 回路・連盟.

This is the first 実験(する) played there since the 悪名高い Western Terrace was bulldozed and 取って代わるd by a new banking, which at least 供給するs decent seating and easier 接近. It may not be the finest piece of 冒険的な architecture in the land, but I'm hoping it will solve some of the problems.

率直に, the old structure wasn't fit for human habitation. Those long 列/漕ぐ/騒動s of (法廷の)裁判s were jammed so の近くに together that people were 軍隊d to shuffle pints of lager, 流出/こぼすing most of it over their 隣人s on the way.

Yorkshire have done what they can to 改善する the ground but, because they don't own it, there are obvious difficulties. It's crazy these days to try to develop a modern stadium that is hemmed in by houses and 事実上 impossible to reach by car.

I know Yorkshire tried to move to a greenfield 場所/位置 at Wakefield but that fell through. It has left them stuck in Headingley and they have no 代案/選択肢 but to bite the 弾丸 and make what 改良s they can.

It's unbelievable that, when the 郡 支配するd the roost in the Twenties and Thirties, somebody at the club did not have the nous to make sure they bought a ground of their own.

They may not be the wealthiest 郡 now but they certainly were then. You can only suppose that, because of the 競争 between cities like 物陰/風下d, Bradford and Sheffield, they could not agree where the ir (警察,軍隊などの)本部 should be.

They've paid for that neglect. They must look at the 素晴らしい 開発 of Trent 橋(渡しをする) and wonder what might have been. Instead, they've been left to make changes piecemeal. Some of the 施設s for fans are still pre-war.

I think we will see いっそう少なく rowdyism now. The trouble at Edgbaston, Headingley and Trent 橋(渡しをする) during the Pakistan 小旅行する taught cricket a lot about stewarding. I think there has been a 確かな overreaction during the Australian 小旅行する. Clubs have realised that 安全 has to be sensible and いっそう少なく 目だつ. Cricket does not need the bouncers they 雇う at football matches.

I'm 楽観的な, then, that Headingley will be better this time - though I'm not so sure about the wicket.

For something like 25 years it has not been. Year after year I remember turning up for a 実験(する) to hear the old groundsman Keith Boyce 約束ing: 'It's going to be a belter.' By lunch, we were usually about 91 for seven.

No 事柄 which groundsman they've 任命するd or which 国/地域 専門家 they've 協議するd, nothing has changed. Whenever the sun goes in the batsman is in trouble. It certainly handicapped Yorkshire's own batsmen when they decided to play the 大多数 of home matches at Headingley. Imagine how much better a player Michael Vaughan would be if he could bat 定期的に on the flat pitches at Taunton or The Oval.

I'm told this 実験(する) will be played on a pitch already used for a 郡 match. This alarms me - 特に as a 確かな S.K. 警告する is の中で the 対立.
