It's a long hard slog for England as bowlers give tourists the 辛勝する／優位 on 開始 day

England began their 実験（する） series in New Zealand with almost 無謀な abandon, 衝突，墜落ing to 167 all out in Dunedin in a flurry of irresponsible 発射s. This time they went to the other extreme, disappearing into their 爆撃するs in the 直面する of disciplined bowling from Brendon McCullum’s over-達成するing underdogs.

So desperate were England not to 手渡す their 対抗者s the 率先 that the first day of their seismic summer turned into something of a damp squib, New Zealand 存在 rewarded for their diligence and 知能 with four prime wickets as England はうd along all day at 正確に／まさに two runs an over.

Certainly anyone at Lord’s who knew little about the game would never have been able to tell which team were 階級d second best in the world and which were a lowly eighth.

As in their home series, New Zealand punched 井戸／弁護士席 above their 負わせる all day and never let England escape a very tight leash.

Perhaps the best description of the first day of this return Investec 実験（する） series was ‘old-fashioned’ as this was how the game used to be before the modern world of Twenty20 and Twitter （判決などを）下すd patience and subtlety almost redundant. Slow it may have been but it was still a fascinating contest.

And it was a contest that, after the first day, would have left McCullum as the happier of the two captains, the late, painfully soft, 解雇／（訴訟の）却下 of Ian Bell before rain and bad light shaved off 10 overs swinging the day New Zealand’s way.

England’s tardiness, with the second new ball 予定 this morning, suddenly looks as if it might be 高くつく／犠牲の大きい with them sitting わずかに uncomfortably now at 160 for four and 大部分は 扶養家族 on the young Yorkshiremen Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow to dig them out of what could become a bit of a 直す／買収する，八百長をする.

What will 関心 Alastair Cook, who would surely have thought long and hard about bowling first, is not the 得点する／非難する／２０ing 率 but the fact that he, Jonathan Trott and Bell all fell after doing the hard work and 設立するing themselves without ever getting on 最高の，を越す of a left-arm 支配するd seam and spin attack.

In truth, a New Zealand 味方する with only three players with previous 実験（する） experience of Lord’s earned that 尊敬（する）・点, their only lapse coming when the 33-year-old ツバメ, a Daniel Vettori clone in his first overseas 実験（する）, was unable to 持つ／拘留する on to a very catchable return chance 申し込む／申し出d by Trott before he had 得点する／非難する／２０d.

It looked as if it would be 高くつく／犠牲の大きい when Trott, who rarely gives a sucker a second chance, began to 位置を示す his metronomic best, failing to be deterred by the 解雇／（訴訟の）却下 of his captain, Cook 落ちるing to left-arm pace again when the excellent Trent Boult 軍隊d an 辛勝する／優位 that was expertly snaffled by BJ Watling.

Yet with tea approaching Trott was squared up by a beauty from Boult, the 選ぶ of the New Zealand attack, and saw Dean Brownlie take an 優れた low catch 飛び込み across second slip. Only 57 runs had come in a middle 開会／開廷／会期 which followed a morning 開会／開廷／会期 of just 56 runs with McCullum, who 主張するd he would have bowled first had he won the 投げ上げる／ボディチェックする, calling all the 発射s.

He watched as Bell played the 発射 of the day, a gorgeous cover 運動 off Wagner that 供給するd a rare moment of fluency, but the classiest member of England’s おもに 正統派の 最高の，を越す six again got himself out in a maddening way.

With the new ball ぼんやり現れるing and clouds 集会 Bell hung out his bat to a wide one from Wagner, preferred here to Doug Bracewell, and 申し込む／申し出d the thinnest of nicks to Watling, who expertly 対処するd all day with the peculiar Lord’ s wobble that has undone many a visiting keepe r on his first 外見 here.

Root and Bairstow, who enjoyed such a 生産力のある 実験（する） against South Africa here last year in Kevin Pietersen’s place, now stand between New Zealand and a position of 最高位 which would again be a 出発 from the script.

But with Lord’s 申し込む／申し出ing swing and the New Zealand left-armers 原因（となる）ing rough outside the 権利-handers off-stumps that Graeme Swann will look to 偉業／利用する, England will be far from despondent just yet. They just know already that they are in for another good 戦う／戦い in this two-match Ashes warm-up series.
