FLETCHER: 沼? I knew he'd be vindictive

Last updated at 23:10 31 October 2007

The first 実験(する) of the 2002-03 Ashes 小旅行する will be remembered for captain Nasser Hussain winning the 投げ上げる/ボディチェックする in Brisbane and surprisingly deciding to bowl first. 一般に, I am a 'bat first' man, but there were mitigating circumstances and I agreed we should bowl first.

Many of the other 上級の players agreed and I think it is opportune that I should 許す you to read these words. 'Brisbane - if there is to be any lateral movement off the seam it will be on day one.

Rod Marsh

'However, the pitch is 一般に slow on the first day and the bounce tennis-ball like. The best days for batting are two, three and four. It has turned に向かって the end of the match in 最近の years but is by no means a 激怒(する)ing turner.'

棒 沼 wrote those words. We had asked him to give us an 評価 of every pitch and what we might 推定する/予想する. I am not 全く 非難するing him for our decison to bowl, which 不正に backfired, but it is 否定できない that his comments were a small contributory factor.

I knew 沼 would be vindictive on our most 最近の Ashes 小旅行する, after he had left the England 始める,決める-up. An article by 沼 appeared in a newspaper during the first 実験(する).

It began: 'It 傷つけるs me to say this but the England 始める,決める-up looks a shambles at the moment. And they have played accordingly. Take the 選択 過程. It's a farce...'

I am glad 沼 について言及するd 選択. He was a very 普通の/平均(する) selector; some of his suggestions and comments about players in 選択 会合s 反抗するd belief. Once, he was 支持する/優勝者ing one of his 学院 players and, when asked why, said: 'I've got to have 信用性 with my 学院 players.'

Nothing to do with selecting the best 味方する, of course. I felt that, for him, 棒 沼's 学院 was much more important than the success of the Eng land cricket team.

And what did he 現実に do as 長,率いる of the 国家の 学院? 認めるd, he 調印するd Troy Cooley. That was a smart move, a 広大な/多数の/重要な 調印 for England cricket and an 平等に grievous loss when he left.

What about the 学院's (or A team's) 記録,記録的な/記録する on 小旅行するs? It has been poor.

Because he was not accountable to anyone, this was soon glossed over. With the depth of England's 高度に-paid professional structure, they should be able to field A teams which (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 most other 同等(の) teams from other countries.

What about the statistic that 上向きs of 80 per cent of the batsmen who …に出席するd the 学院 then 成し遂げるd worse the に引き続いて season than in previous years?

The only one who showed any real 改良 was Middlesex's Owais Shah, who put that 改良 負かす/撃墜する to speaking to India's Mohammad Azharuddin.
