Fergie is planning next season before Moscow has even sunk in

Moscow 2008 has already disappeared, locked somewhere in the endless and priceless memory bank of Sir Alex Ferguson.

As soon as Edwin ÀèƬ der Sar ÀßΩ¤¹¤ë himself Êñ°Ï¤¹¤ëd and ¡Ê³¤¡¤±ì¤Ê¤É¤¬¡Ë°û¤ß¹þ¤àd by his team-mates in the Luzhniki Stadium ¤Ë°ú¤Â³¤¤¤Æ his »Ù»ý¤¹¤ë¡¿Í¥¾¡¼Ôs League-winning ·ºÈ³¡¤È³Â§ save, Manchester ÉôÂâd¡Çs tsar ¹¶·â¤¹¤ë¡¤¾×Æͤ¹¤ë the button ¼¨¤¹d exhilaration and< br />switched it off again straight away.

¡ÈThe ¹¬Ê¡´¶ drains away almost ¤¹¤°¤Ë,¡É pondered Ferguson.

Cup and away: Sir Alex Ferguson arrives with the UEFA »Ù»ý¤¹¤ë¡¿Í¥¾¡¼Ôs League ¥È¥í¥Õ¥£¡¼ at Manchester Airport last night

¡ÈBut the ¹Âç¤Ê¡¿Â¿¿ô¤Î¡¿½ÅÍ×¤Ê »ñ»º I¡Çve got is that I won¡Çt get carried away with it and the next morning
I will be thinking about next season.¡É

There in a couple of lines lay the ÁÏΩ¡¿´ðÁà of his greatness.

The last ¥È¥í¥Õ¥£¡¼ is all ȳ¶â and dandy but it¡Çs the next one he cares about.

So his second European Cup could, alarmingly for the »Ä¤ê¡¿µÙ·Æ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë of ÉôÂâd¡Çs ¹ñÆâ¤Î pursuers, make the old master more of a menace than ever now.

The feeling that he¡Çd underachieved in Europe with ÉôÂâd had kept gnawing away at him for nine years since their ¾¡Íø in Barcelona but now that he¡Çs taken his rightful seat ¤ÎÃæ¤Ç the ¥¨¥ê¡¼¥È group of two-time winning ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Ís, you could feel a new sense of ²ò·è¤¹¤ë and ambition ¹ÈϰϤˤ錄¤ë through him.

Because where there was a second ¸ª½ñ¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ë with what he considered this ÀøºßŪ¤Ë best-ever ÉôÂâd Ì£Êý¤¹¤ë, there is the strong scent of a third next year in Rome¡Çs Olympic Stadium, the scene of the first of ¡ÊƬ¤¬¡Ë¤Ò¤ç¤¤¤ÈÆ°¤¯ Paisley¡Çs £³Çܤˤʤë European Cup ¾¡Íøs with Liverpool in 1977.

Paisley remains the only ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í to have won it three times so, suddenly, a new personal ÌÜ°õ ¤Ü¤ó¤ä¤ê¸½¤ì¤ës large for a man who shows abs olutely no Ä´°õ¤¹¤ë of Èè¤ì¤¿¡¿¤¦¤ó¤¶¤ê¤·¤¿ing.

It¡Çs not the only challenge. First, there¡Çs Liverpool¡Çs 18 League ¸ª½ñ¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ës »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë to be equalled and should ÉôÂâd ¾¡Íø¡¤¾¡¤Ä in Rome, they would be the first team to ÊÝ»ý¤¹¤ë the European Cup since Arrigo Sacchi¡Çs AC Milan in 1990 and the first ever to ¼óÈø¤è¤¯ defend it since the »Ù»ý¤¹¤ë¡¿Í¥¾¡¼Ôs League Ƚ·¿ was introduced.

¡ÈIt is not Ê¿°×¤Ê but the young players who have tasted success here will want to do it again,¡É he said.

¡ÈI think we are good enough. We have made one step º£¸å ¤Ë¸þ¤«¤Ã¤Æ getting a respectable ¿Íʪ¡¿»Ñ¡¿¿ô»ú ¡¼¤Ë´Ø¤·¤Æ¡¿¡¼¤ÎÅÀ¤Çs of »Ù»ý¤¹¤ë¡¿Í¥¾¡¼Ôs League ¾¡Íø¡¤¾¡¤Äs and we want to Äɲ乤ë more and get up there ¤È°ì½ï¤Ë the Liverpools, Bayern Munichs and Ajaxs.

¡ÈAnd then you never know what ambition can do to you. Real Madrid have nine ¾¡Íø¡¤¾¡¤Äs and it is a Ū you take for ǧ¤á¤ëd ¡½ perhaps not in my lifetime ¡½ but it is ²ÁÃ͡ʤ¬¤¢¤ë¡Ë chasing.¡É

¸ø¼°Ê¸½ñ¡¤Ç§¤á¤ë the careful insertion of the word ¡Æperhaps¡Ç. Ferguson has never »Ï¤á¤ë¡¤·è¤á¤ë ¸Â³¦s on what he believes is possible; you wouldn¡Çt put it past him to think he¡Çd only be 72 when they won their ninth.

Like Steve Waugh¡Çs old Australian cricket team, he goes by the motto ¡ÆNever Ëþ¤µ¤»¤ëd¡Ç and though it may be more for the greater glory of club and not for himself that he keeps Äɵ᤹¤ëing success at the age of 66, the ²ÄǽÀ¤Î¤¢¤ë by-À½ÉÊ is that over the next few years before his Â࿦ he could make redundant any serious argument over who¡Çs the greatest football ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í of them all.

Wednesday¡Çs ¾¡Íø, of course, only ¶¯²½¤¹¤ëd any »öÎã¡¿´µ¼Ô to be made that he may already »ý¤Ä¡¿¹´Î±¤¹¤ë that accolade.

¤Þ¤Ã¤¿¤ÀÃæ¤Ë all the emotion Èô¹Ôµ¡¤Ç¹Ô¤¯ing about over the 1958 Munich and 1968 Wembley ¼þǯµÇ°Æüs, much ¤¤¤Ã¤½¤¦¾¯¤Ê¤¯ attention was paid to how it was also 25 years since he¡Çd ²ò½ü¤¹¤ëd his first European ¥È¥í¥Õ¥£¡¼, the Cup ¾¡Íø¼Ôs¡Ç Cup, with Aberdeen.

Those days of ¶Ã¤¯¤Ù¤¡¿ÆÃÌ¿¤Î¡¿Î×»þ¤Î overachievement at Pittodrie where he won 10 ¥È¥í¥Õ¥£¡¼s and Ê´ºÕ¤¹¤ëd through the Old ²ñ¼Ò¡¿·ø¤¤ duopoly will always be the ºÇ½ªÅª¤Ê answer to anyone who dares ¼¨º¶¤¹¤ë that, at mighty ÉôÂâd, he¡Çs never had to build bricks from straw in the way that, say, the ¹Âç¤Ê¡¿Â¿¿ô¤Î¡¿½ÅÍ×¤Ê Brian Clough had to do at more homespun Derby and Nottingham Forest.

The simple fact is that, in club ´ÉÍý¡¿·Ð±Ä, Ferguson has done the lot.

He¡Çs done a Clough, winning in Europe with an unfashionable club; he¡ Çs done a Fabio Capello, ²ò½ü¤¹¤ëing league ¸ª½ñ¤òÍ¿¤¨¤ës in two different countries; he¡Çs done a Rafa Benitez and a Jose Mourinho, collecting European silverware with two clubs; he¡Çs done a Giovanni Trapattoni, ÊÌ´Ûing ¥È¥í¥Õ¥£¡¼s in three Ϣ³¤¹¤ë £±£°Ç¯´Ös.

There is an argument to ¼¨º¶¤¹¤ë that he has not yet ¤ä¤á¤ë matched the ¶ÈÀÓ¡¿À®½¢s
of ¡ÊƬ¤¬¡Ë¤Ò¤ç¤¤¤ÈÆ°¤¯ Paisley, who won three European Cups in his nine years in ¹ðȯ¡Ê¤¹¤ë¡Ë¡¤¹ðÁʡʤ¹¤ë¡Ë¡¿ÎÁ¶â of Liverpool.

But Ferguson has built ·à¤Î teams and then rebuilt them even more compellingly
so that, as his assistant Carlos Queiroz É۹𤹤ëd yesterday, we have to talk about ¡Èwithout µ¿Ìä the best ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í of his À¤Âå¡É.

Maybe any À¤Âå? The sheer Éé¤ï¤»¤ë of the Åý·×¡Ê³Ø¡Ë would say so. Wednesday¡Çs was the 32nd major ¾¡Íø¼Ôs¡Ç ¥á¥À¥ë of his ´ÉÍý¡¿·Ð±Ä career, 21 more than Capello and 11 more than even that venerable serial ¾¡Íø¼Ô, 櫡ʤˤ«¤±¤ë¡Ë ¡½ but no stats can ÅÁ¤¨¤ë the attractive bouquet of each Ϣ³¤¹¤ë

Ferguson vintage. Chateau Fergie 2008 will doubtless be ²þÁ±¤¹¤ëd this summer with the Ⱦüʪ ·à¤Î Ä´°õ in the goalscoring department.

Like the thrilling young Lyon striker Karim Benzema, perhaps?

Or a brilliant enigma who thinks he deserves a sparkling new home? Yes, Fergie could make Dimitar Berbatov the »Ù»ý¤¹¤ë¡¿Í¥¾¡¼Ô he ¤»¤Í¤Ð¤Ê¤é¤Ê¤¤ be.

And even while there may be a little Ãϸµ¤Î difficulty to sort out with Cristiano Ronaldo still seemingly playing silly b¡Çs about his ̤Íè ¡½ I wouldn¡Çt contest Ferguson¡Çs bet that he¡Çll »Ù»ý¤òÆÀ¤è¤¦¤ÈÅؤá¤ë the Portuguese to still be at the club next season.

ºÇ½ªÅª¤Ë the only real ´Ø¿´ at Old Trafford would be not if the best player in the world left tomorrow, but if the best ·Ð±Ä¼Ô¡¿»ÙÇÛ¿Í in the world suddenly decided it was time to retire tomorrow.

And that¡Çs about as likely as Chelsea embracing the ³µÇ° of ´ÉÍý¤Î °ÂÁ´ and Ϣ³.
