Manchester 部隊d legend George Best's 1968 European Cup 勝利者's メダル fetches £156,000 at auction

George Best's 1968 European Cup 勝利者's メダル has been sold at auction for £156,000.

It was arguably the greatest accolade won by the Northern Irish genius during a 騒然とした football career.

His goal in extra time of the final at Wembley put Manchester 部隊d on course for a 4-1 勝利，勝つ against Benfica which helped to create the legend of a club which had 苦しむd so horribly with the Munich 災害 10 years earlier.

The European Cup メダル was の中で 13 of Best's awards put up for sale by his sister Barbara McNally, who said she was 軍隊d to part with treasured mementos ーするために 支払う／賃金 off his 負債s. The items fetched almost £200,000.

Flamboyant on and off the pitch, Best died five years ago - 老年の just 59 - after a lifetime 戦う／戦いing alcoholism.

A replica of the European Cup 勝利者's メダル, which was made for Best by the PFA when he misplaced the 初めの メダル, fetched £9,000.

The BBC Lifetime 業績／成就 Award the 回復するing アル中患者 won in 2002 sold for £7,800; and the 2000 Belfast Telegraph Hall of Fame award raised £4,800.

Other important lots sold 含むd the 2000 International Hall of 支持する／優勝者s award, which made £3,960 and the Freedom of Castlereagh award, which fetched £4,560.

The last shirt worn by Best for Northern Ireland while a Manchester 部隊d player on November 14 1973, sold for £6,000.

The sale also featured the shirt worn by Brazilian footballer Pele in his final international 外見 for Brazil versus Yugoslavia on July 18 1971, which made £8,640; and a collection of Muhammad Ali memorabilia, 調印するd and 寄付するd by the celebrated former boxer to Parkinson's UK, which raised over £3,000 for the Parkinson's 病気 charity.

McNarry, 58, had told how she had no choice but to sell off the late Manchester 部隊d icon’s prizes at the Bonhams auction in Chester.

In a 声明, she said: 'I’m 絶対 荒廃させるd that the executor is having to arrange for the sale of George’s トロフィーs and memorabilia which 持つ／拘留する so many precious memories for myself and George’s many fans 世界的な.

'But I reluctantly have to 受託する that there is no 代案／選択肢 予定 to the 財政上の status of the 広い地所.'

Best’s £135,853 広い地所 went almost 完全に to McNarry when he died of 組織／臓器 失敗 in London’s 私的な Cromwell Hospital in November 2005.

At a previous Bonhams auction in 2003, Best himself sold his 1968 European Footballer of the Year トロフィー for over £150,000. Best said he would 'shed a 涙／ほころび' at losing the トロフィー, which he sold to 支払う／賃金 for a Greek holiday home.
