Redemption boys: Oxlade-Chamberlain and Cleverley are 重要なs to Hodgson's new look England

Roy Hodgson, it seems, has the 手段 of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It should be said there is no malice about the boy: he is enthusiastic, 有望な and talented. But he is 19. And he does need to learn.

Hodgson 明確に likes him a lot ― Oxlade-Chamberlain will surely be one of his team’s 重要な creative players assuming England reach Brazil 2014 ― but he is not beyond reproaching him when necessary.

Learning curve: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has made a 広大な/多数の/重要な start to his England career but has a lot to learn によれば England boss Roy Hodgson

It was Oxlade-Chamberlain himself who 明らかにする/漏らすd last week that he received Hodgson’s first proper telling-off during Euro 2012, for showboating in training.

And although Hodgson (人命などを)奪う,主張するs he does not remember the 出来事/事件, he did lace 賞賛する for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s 陳列する,発揮する in the 5-0 勝利,勝つ against Moldova on Friday night with another small 思い出の品 of his 責任/義務s.

‘I thought Alex was very good first half,’ said Hodgson. ‘But we made it (疑いを)晴らす to him we were going to take him off after 60 minutes, so I think he forgot to play in the 15 minutes of the second half. But that will be an 利益/興味ing lesson for him 同様に: 特に when I tell him.’

It should be said Hodgson had the hint of a smile as he 配達するd his admonishment. And he 追加するd: ‘We’re very pleased with him anyway. He did what we 手配中の,お尋ね者 and I selected him to do what he 現実に did in the first half 極端に 井戸/弁護士席.’

There will be no need to tell him of his mistake when the squad gather in Watford today. The point has now been made, 公然と.

But Hodgson knows Oxlade-Chamberlain is an emotionally 円熟した 19-year-old, as he 論証するd with his self-depreciating line about 存在 told off. He can take it and will learn from it.

And he does need to learn, because he has the 可能性のある to be a 重要な player in England’s 発展させるing style.

His former 兵器庫 team-mate, コマドリ 先頭 Persie, underwent a 類似の tutorial when he was dropped by Arsene Wenger. When he asked Wenger’s assistants why, he was 簡単に told to watch Robert Pires.

Slowly it 夜明けd on the Dutchman, as it is beginning to on Oxlade- Chamberlain: there are times to play it simple ― that is, in your own half ― and times to take 危険s, in the final third of the pitch. And you can never just coast. If you do, there is always someone ― on this occasion Theo Walcott ― on the (法廷の)裁判 to take your place.

The build-up to the match in Chisinau was 支配するd by the return of the old guard who duly 配達するd, with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard utterly 支配的な in their わずかに deeper midfield 役割s.

Yet the younger players also caught. the 注目する,もくろむ. Along with Oxlade-Chamberlain, there was Tom Cleverley, building on his impressive Olympics and England debut against Italy last month in a 役割 somewhere between midfield and attack, looking very much the modern footballer.

伝統的な centre forw ards are 事情に応じて変わる out of fashion these days and Cleverley played as Cesc Fabregas often does for Barcelona, and as Santi Cazorla is for 兵器庫.

Of course, this was only Moldova and Hodgson now has to 査定する/(税金などを)課す whether he can do the same against かなり better players on Tuesday when England play ウクライナ共和国 at Wembley. But 明確に he has the footballing 知能 to understand the 役割.

‘I suppose you could say Tom Cleverley is an attacking midfield player, but he’s an attacking midfield player in the same way Cesc Fabregas is,’ said Hodgson.

‘He’s やめる 有能な of coming 支援する into a central midfield 役割 and やめる 有能な even, of coming 支援する to 勝利,勝つ a ball when it’s necessary.

‘He’s just a good midfield player and he took, I suppose, a bit more 責任/義務 for getting closer to Jermain Defoe and 許すing Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard to get on the ball in deeper positions where they are comfortable.’

‘The Olympics were important because that’s where I sort of discovered him. I knew him when he was at Watford and I’d seen him play a few games as 代用品,人 for Manchester 部隊d. But he got 負傷させるd very 早期に in the previous season.

'So I suppose the Olympics was the 適切な時期 for me, really, to cast the 支配する over him ― and it was good that I could do that because it means that when we were selecting squads, he was one of the 指名するs I 手配中の,お尋ね者 to 追加する to my 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる).’

Hodgson was 自然に delighted with their 業績/成果s ― he also 選び出す/独身d out James Milner ― 特に in 見解(をとる) of the 重要な players 行方不明の going into these World Cup qualifiers: Wayne Rooney, Andy Carroll, Ashley Cole, Ashley Young and Chris Smalling.

But with Oxlade-Chamberlain and Cleverley, there is a 4-2-3-1 形式 発展させるing with England that is much more 柔軟な and vibrant than the 伝統的な 4-4-2 with which Hodgson is associated.

With England 存在 out-passed at Euro 2012, when Hodgson had just taken the 職業, there was a 恐れる that they were 逆戻りするing to type under his 管理/経営.

But his message to players has been a different one to public perception: he 強調s the need to keep the ball, he encourages his 十分な-支援するs to attack 積極性, and he asks his attacking players to show fluidity and movement in their positioning. In short, he is no Luddite, resisting the flow of the modern game; he is pointing England in the 権利 direction.

Whether these players can 完全にする that 旅行 is a 討議する point. After all, this was only Moldova.

But with players like Oxlade-Chamberlain and Cleverley to the fore, it is at least a step along the road to redemption.
