He fled General Augusto Pinochet’s 軍の クーデター in Chile, played a part in taking Kevin Keegan to Hamburg and discovered Tony Yeboah. One of his proudest moments (機の)カム as Rwanda coach, when he watched Hutus and Tutsis hugging in Kigali’s Amahoro Stadium six years after the country's 野蛮な 集団殺戮.

His 遺産/遺物 began at the 結論 of his playing career in 1953, learning his (手先の)技術 from Sepp Herberger, the architect of the 奇蹟 of Bern.

'Sepp was a father 人物/姿/数字 for me, even in my days as a player,’ the 88-year-old said. ‘I did my coaching licence from Sepp after my playing career as the youngest professional coach of the nation. It's what may have made me stand out from many coaches who were keen on getting a position in the first Bundesliga season.’

It was 1963 and Gutendorf was 雇うd by unfancied Meidericher SV (now MSV Duisburg), one of the 16 創立者 teams of the newly-created league. Against all 半端物s they finished second behind FC Cologne.

‘It was a street-team, with almost all players out of the same neighbourhood. They grew up playing together. All from working-class families, that were hungry and eager for success like it is rarely 設立する,’ Gutendorf explained.

‘To bring more 信用/信任 in the team, when we qualified for the first Bundesliga season, I bought Helmut Rahn, who 発射 the winning World Cup goal for us in 1954. Though he was past his prime, it also brought the 集まりs into our stadium and he still had it! Success with underdogs is the only time where a coach can really 向こうずね.’

After spending time at Stuttgart and Schalke, with whom he lost to Manchester City in the 半分-決勝戦 of 1970’s Cup-勝利者s’ Cup, Gutendorf’s nomadic 傾向s took 持つ/拘留する.

His travels took him to club teams in Tunisia and Peru, but in 1972 he crossed the 狭くする 国境 to Chile where he would drink whisky with 社会主義者 大統領,/社長 Salvador Allende, 栄冠を与える 行方不明になる Chile and lead the country to the brink of the World Cup.

But he could not watch the two-legged play-off with the Soviet Union as Gutendorf was 軍隊d to 逃げる the country に引き続いて Pinochet’s US-支援するd クーデター in 1973.

‘I developed a friendship with Allende during my time as 国家の coach there. In South America, they almost 扱う/治療する you like foreign 大統領,/社長 with such a position. He used to 飛行機で行く me in to his country house, where we drank whisky together, or he’d 招待する me to 栄冠を与える 行方不明になる Chile or open 橋(渡しをする)s.

‘During the 反乱 it became quickly (疑いを)晴らす that as I was a friend of his I was trying to be 設立する. The German 外交官/大使 managed to get me on the last Lufthansa 計画(する) that left the country.’

Gutendorf had built a 塀で囲む in the 国家の stadium for his players to practice 狙撃. But he later discovered it was used for a more macabre 目的.

‘I learnt that the 軍の used my practice 塀で囲む which I had built for ball-training, to 遂行する/発効させる their 囚人s,’ he said.

In a quirk of 運命/宿命, Gutendorf returned home to watch his former 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s from the stands of Berlin’s Olympiastadion as they 辛うじて lost 1-0 to 結局の 勝利者s West Germany in the group 行う/開催する/段階.

Fresh from their Cup 勝利者’s Cup 勝利,勝つ, the players were loyal to their former 経営者/支配人. And they weren’t sold on the arrival of a curly-haired Yorkshireman, either.

‘Dr Peter Krohn, the 大統領,/社長 of HSV 支援する then had a 見通し to make the club a 最高の,を越す-four club of the world. He also 手配中の,お尋ね者 to do it with extravagance, playing in pink jerseys and with musical shows in the half-time, ’ said Gutendorf?

‘So I told him I will do the 職業 if he gets me Keegan, whom I felt was one of the best in the world at the time, and he got him for me. Much to the dislike of the other players, who felt it wasn’t necessary. They ボイコット(する)d me from that moment on, along with the 大統領,/社長 結局.’

Gutendorf lasted just three months in the 地位,任命する. With Keegan 最初 ostracised, the tightly-knit group 辞退するd to pass to their high-収入 輸入する and 反乱d against the coach.

‘Felix Magath was one of the 主要な players. They were sad that their much loved coach Klotzer left. The whole 一時期/支部 of HSV was unlucky for me. It made me 逃げる to the furthest play かもしれない away from there: 国家の coach of Australia!’
