The Open and shut 事例／患者: Louis Oosthuizen shows the charm of a 前線-走者 to join ゴルフ's history men

There was a rather dishevelled England 旗，新聞一面トップの大見出し／大々的に報道する hanging from the stand at the 支援する of the 12th green. Who knows what 冒険的な horrors it had borne 証言，証人／目撃する to already this summer? At some point between Paul Casey’s sixth and seventh 発射, as the 勢力均衡 転換d inexorably away from the Englishman, it was packed away.

This was not a day for nationalistic fervour. This was a day to salute a very singular type of sportsman. This was a day for the 前線-走者. Done 井戸／弁護士席, 主要な from the 前線 looks 平易な. So simple, in fact, that it is 一般的に supposed that what Louis Oosthuizen 達成するd at St Andrews on Sunday? was, almost literally, a stroll in the park.

Oosthuizen started the day four 発射s （疑いを）晴らす and all but 二塁打d that 利ざや. He was never より小数の than three 発射s in 前線 at any 行う／開催する／段階 and in his 安定した しっかり掴む the 2010 Open became the 2010 の近くにd.

Yet to put the sheer excellence of his 業績／成果 into 視野, consider how many times the feat has been 達成するd since World War Two. In the past 64 years of Open 競争, there have been just 14 occasions when the 勝利者 has led 完全な, as Oosthuizen did for three days or more, and just 12 golfers have 支配するd as 完全に.

Jack Nicklaus never did it, neither did Tom Wats on. These 巨大（な）s aside, however, the 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる） is a directory of legends of the game: Tiger 支持を得ようと努めるd, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Peter Thomson, Henry Cotton.

Oosthuizen’s 指名する does not sit 特に comfortably in that company as yet, but the manner of his victory does.

Had 支持を得ようと努めるd produced a final 一連の会議、交渉／完成する as 保証するd as this before his personal unravelling, it would have been 前進するd as one more 推論する／理由 why his 同時代のs were 持続するing a futile 存在.

Had 支持を得ようと努めるd pulled off what Oosthuizen did at the ninth, many would have 結論するd mere mortals could no longer compete.

The ninth is the second shortest par four on the course but, even so, with Oosthuizen having dropped his first 発射 of the 一連の会議、交渉／完成する on the previous par three, the 楽天主義者s ― those who travelled north with England 旗s, no 疑問 ― sensed hope.

So it was an 行為／法令／行動する of wonderful audacity that Oosthuizen should 答える／応じる by 運動ing the green of the 352-yard 穴を開ける and 沈むing a 30-foot putt for an eagle two.

That is what 前線-running is about: 陳列する，発揮するing the pure 決意 to soak up all the 圧力, all the 可能性のある for humiliation, and send it 支援する out to the world as a snarl of 確信して 侵略.

Casey dared to challenge Oosthuizen, and the South African 直面するd him 負かす／撃墜する. On the 支援する nine, Casey then dropped four 発射s. Oosthuizen, 辞退するing to 屈服する to the cliche of the novice 倍のing under 緊張する, 発射 level par.

Steadiness personified, he could have been Nick Faldo, the last golfer whose 初期のs were not TW to so 全く 支配する an Open.

支持を得ようと努めるd, of course, is the daddy of 前線-走者s and has won The Open on three occasions while bludgeoning the field into submission. He led for three 一連の会議、交渉／完成するs in 2006 and 2000, and from start to finish at St Andrews in 2005.

支持を得ようと努めるd is such a natural 前線-走者, in fact, that he has never won a major without having at least a 株 of the lead on the final day. Where others are 減ずるd by the intensity of the occasion, 支持を得ようと努めるd 栄えるs on it.

Oosthuizen appeared to on Sunday, 同様に, keeping his game together and letting Casey make the mistakes as he tried to 軍隊 a 復帰.

Oosthuizen said he regarded the 12th as the turning point. It was the 穴を開ける on which Casey entered a large collection of gorse bushes from the tee, leaving his partner an age to consider a short 半導体素子 to the green to 始める，決める up a birdie 適切な時期.

So when did he feel happy that this would be his day and he was not 運命にあるd to be just another 次第に損なう who couldn’t 扱う the 圧力; an Open choker like the pitiable ジーンズ 先頭 de Velde or Sergio Garcia, who led for three 一連の会議、交渉／完成するs and by three 発射s at Carnoustie in 2007 before succumbing to Padraig Harrington in a play-off.

In his answer, the unseen torment of the 前線-走者 was 明らかにする／漏らすd, because

前線-running is the 推論する／理由 Paula Radcliffe 持つ／拘留するs a special place in the hearts of the nation. There is something so decent and noble about winning a マラソン from the 前線; about running as 急速な／放蕩な as one can and challenging the field to catch up.

It makes those races in which she is caught, 長，率いる bobbing ever more wildly, the 必然的な 影をつくる／尾行する 企て，努力，提案ing its time in her wake, almost unbearably sad.

前線-running seems such an honourable thing to do, it 控訴，上告s to our British sense of fair play. Even though Oosthuizen 勝つ／広く一帯に広がるd over a 大部分は British leaderboard, the （人が）群がる reaction was one of 是認, not 憤慨. They 高く評価する／（相場などが）上がるd the candour of his 活動／戦闘s.

It was impossible to 耐える such a 罰金 competitor a grudge. Looking 支援する, knowing what we now know, Oosthuizen could have borrowed one of Miguel Angel Jimenez’s cigars and 誘発するd it up flamboyantly after the 12th.

This became, as some 恐れるd, a 行列. Yet in Oosthuizen’s mind he was the hunter 追跡（する）d. He was in a tight corner, almost to the last. Every 発射, each undulation of these magnificent links, was fresh 適切な時期 for 大災害.

‘It’s 平易な now to say I had it in me to 勝利，勝つ a major,’ he pondered, ‘but first I had to believe that myself.’

And this is what makes the 2010 支持する／優勝者 so exceptional. 支持を得ようと努めるd had the belief; so did Palmer, Faldo, Player and Thomson. They were already the 広大な／多数の／重要なs of ゴルフ. But Lodewicus Theodorus Oosthuizen?

勝利者 of the Andalusian Open, and not much else? A 前線-走者? A closer? A deadeyed master of t he universe? Who knew? 本気で, who knew??
