に引き続いて the death of Lizzie Watkins, why does ホッケー 辞退する to 保護する its players?

  • ホッケー player Lizzie Watkins died in 2012 after a ball 攻撃する,衝突する her on the 長,率いる
  • Similarities between Watkins' death and the passing of cricketer Phillip Hughes are uncanny
  • Hughes’s death 刺激するd an instant review of safety 基準s in cricket
  • However, ホッケー has carried on since the death of Watkins
  • Arsene Wenger (人命などを)奪う,主張するs 兵器庫 have played 180 支持する/優勝者s League games, more than the club appeared in before his arrival
  • Yet the 判型 of the 支持する/優勝者s League has?利益d?Wenger?
  • Raymond Verheijen has criticised 兵器庫 yet football's 最高の,を越す 経営者/支配人's have not called for his services
  • Englishman Gary Cahill and Adam Johnson both 避けるd 罰 after appearing to dive in 首相 League

You probably won’t have heard of Lizzie Watkins. Michael Clarke did not read the eulogy at her funeral, there was no 世界的な gesture to 示す her passing, no putting out of bats, or Twitter hashtags. She was not a 国家の hero like Phillip Hughes. She was just another young 競技者, who died of a 長,率いる 傷害, 老年の 24.

Watkins was a ホッケー player. On May 6, 2012, in a Western Australia 明言する/公表する league game for her club, North Coast Raiders, a ball deflected off her stick. Like Hughes, she must have instinctively flinched at the 決定的な moment because it then struck her on the 支援する of the 長,率いる. Watkins died the next day.

The similarities to the death of Hughes, struck by a short-pitched cricket ball, are uncanny. Like Hughes, Watkins had family at the game ― her sister Catherine was in the team with her. Like Hughes, she fell unconscious almost すぐに and did not 回復する. Like Hughes, the 長,率いる 外傷/ショック was very 広大な/多数の/重要な.?

Watkins' death was 類似の to the passing of cricketer Phillip Hughes yet 反して an instant review of safety 基準s in cricket was soon 刺激するd, ホッケー sails on

Yet 反して Hughes’s death 刺激するd an instant review of safety 基準s in cricket, with talk of 保護の helmet redesigns and steps to 確実にする the 悲劇 is never repeated, ホッケー sails on.

Watkins’ 傷害 may have been a fluke but it was hardly a surprise. Indeed, anyone who has watched the sport played to even a basic level of competence is probably mystified that fatalities, or at the very least 極端に serious 傷害s, are not more 流布している.

S ure enough, on November 29, two days after Hughes died, Sam Owen, playing for Blackpool 2nd XI against Bolton in North West ホッケー League 分割 Four, was placed in an induced 昏睡 after 存在 struck on the 長,率いる by a ball. The teams had 観察するd a minute’s silence for Hughes before the game. Owen is now 回復するing after 外科. A 地元の newspaper 報告(する)/憶測d that it was the second straight match in which he had been 攻撃する,衝突する on the 長,率いる.

The uninitiated may feel this makes Owen a klutz, but anyone who plays ホッケー will know he was 簡単に unlucky and that the same 運命/宿命 could 生じる any player, however 技術d. Ironically, the 抱擁する publicity around the death of Hughes has 後継するd in 促進するing the wider 審議 in another sport. Safety in ホッケー is finally 存在 診察するd.?

One coach, Ric Charlesworth, a former first-class cricketer ― winning three Sheffield 保護物,者s with Western Australia ― and an interna tional ホッケー player, is even 尋問 the 未来 of the most important 始める,決める-piece in the sport, the drag flick 刑罰,罰則 corner.

Charlesworth is no part-timer where ホッケー is 関心d. He 代表するd Australia in four オリンピック ― it would have been five but they ボイコット(する)d Moscow ― and as captain in 1984. He coached Australia’s women’s team from 1993 to 2000―― they won two Olympic gold メダルs ― and the men’s team from 2009 to 2014. He was the second 指名する inducted into Australian ホッケー’s Hall of Fame. So when he 会談 of abandoning the means by which the 大多数 of goals are 得点する/非難する/20d ― 純粋に on safety grounds ― this is no madman howling in the wilderness.

The 刑罰,罰則 corner, known as a ‘short’, is awarded おもに for 違反s in and around the goalmouth D. These can be very minor, such as the ball hitting the foot of an 対抗者. So 広大な/多数の/重要な is the 適切な時期 現在のd, however, that if an attacking player cannot go for goal in open play, his next best 選択 is to try to 勝利,勝つ a ‘short’. In ホッケー of any 基準, most goals come from these 始める,決める-pieces.

From a 刑罰,罰則 corner, members of the attacking 味方する line up on the 辛勝する/優位 of the D, while the defending team is 許すd four players, 加える the goalkeeper, on the goal-line. The ball is then 挿入するd by an 攻撃者 from a position 10 yards wide of the goal.?

伝統的に one defender remains guarding each 地位,任命する, and two 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 out to 封鎖する the strike. A 攻撃する,衝突する must be kept low ― but flicks, scoops and 押し進めるs have no 制限s beyond dangerous play. Sandeep Singh, India’s 刑罰,罰則 corner specialist, has a drag flick 速度(を上げる) 手段d at 90mph. The 保護の 器具/備品 for those running に向かって this 弾丸 is 限られた/立憲的な to gum 保護物,者, 向こうずね pads and a 直面する mask, but not one of these items is 義務的な.

The ball is as hard as in cricket but the distance much 減ずるd, around 12 yards. It is a 奇蹟 that 傷害 is not 普及した.

Certainly, Charlesworth thinks so. ‘直面する facts, in cricket 22 yards separate the bowler and a 井戸/弁護士席- 保護するd batsman,’ he says. ‘At a 刑罰,罰則 corner, the distance is shorter and the 走者 is then asked to fend off a ball travelling at almost the same 速度(を上げる). Isn’t that dangerous?

‘What happened to Lizzie Watkins is 最近の and we せねばならない be vigilant. If a deflection can be 致命的な, a pre- meditated flick can be doubly so. The 刑罰,罰則 corner has to go.’

Charlesworth 支持するs 義務的な 取調べ/厳しく尋問する helmets as worn by the catcher in baseball, or 取って代わるing penal ty corners with a 25-second four versus two shoot-out. That change may be extreme, but compulsory 保護 isn’t.

So far, all Charlesworth’s ideas have met with 抵抗. ホッケー’s 治める/統治するing 団体/死体, the FIH, while finding no 推論する/理由 to make any form of 保護 compulsory, go to 広大な/多数の/重要な lengths to make plain the 限界s on headwear. At short corners, a ‘smooth preferably transparent or white but さもなければ 選び出す/独身-coloured 直面する mask which closely fits the 直面する’ is permitted. They might 同様に 追加する ‘you big sissy’.

Incredibly, more time is 充てるd to the colour than to 確実にするing safety. The FIH say 取調べ/厳しく尋問する helmets could 原因(となる) 傷害 if players (機の)カム into 接触する ― yet goal-keepers wear them without hazard.

The death of Phillip Hughes was a 悲劇. Through it all, though, cricket’s only solace was the 無作為の nature of his misfortune: a sequence of freak circumstances that no-one had 熟視する/熟考するd even in our safety-conscious modern age.

Changes will be made but, even if they were not, the chances of a repeat are tiny. And no sportsman can be made invincible. ‘There is only so far you can go with helmets until 見通し is impaired,’ as Nasser Hussain pointed out.

Yet ホッケー has already had its Phillip Hughes moment and nothing altered. Lizzie Watkins was not famous enough to make the sport rewrite its code of safety. When the time (機の)カム, her death was 示すd 負かす/撃墜する as an exceptional occurrence, and no more. Still, at least she wasn’t wearing the wrong-coloured 直面する mask.

TIMES HAVE CHANGED, ARSENE?

There are many ways for Arsene Wenger to defend his 記録,記録的な/記録する at 兵器庫: two 4-1 勝利,勝つs in a week are a fair start. Specious (人命などを)奪う,主張するs about the 支持する/優勝者s League, however, are not. ‘Since I arrived we have played over 180 支持する/優勝者s League games,’ Wenger said. ‘You will see that before then they didn’t play too many.’

Yes, and there is a 推論する/理由 for this. Wenger arrived at 兵器庫 in 1996. Until season 1997-98 only the 支持する/優勝者s were 許すd to enter UEFA’s main 競争 ― unless the league 勝利者s had already qualified as European Cup 勝利者s. In 1999-2000 that was 拡大するd to three 首相 League qualifiers, and later four. So how many times would Wenger have made it into Europe under the 制限s placed on every previous 兵器庫 経営者/支配人? Four.

He would have qualified with 兵器庫 as 支持する/優勝者s in 1997-98, 2001-02 and 2003-04. In 新規加入, the year Manchester 部隊d won the 競争, 1998-99, 兵器庫 would have made it in the に引き続いて season as 走者s-up.?

兵器庫 経営者/支配人 Arsene Wenger celebrates after winning the FA Cup and 首相 League 肩書を与える 支援する in 1998

一方/合間, had previous 兵器庫 経営者/支配人s played by Wenger’s 支配するs over the same time period, they would have qualified on eight occasions. In 1988-89 and 1990-91 as 支持する/優勝者s, but also in 1979-80, 1980-81, 1986-87, 1989-90, 1991-92 and 1993-94 by finishing in the 最高の,を越す four.

Wenger also overlooks that the first time 兵器庫 won the 肩書を与える under George Graham they were not 許すd to take their place in the European Cup 予定 to the 禁止(する) on English clubs.

And, no, what went before does not compare to Wenger’s 16 straight 支持する/優勝者s League qualifi cations, but they were different times, and the 財政上の stranglehold of the エリート clubs was not in place.?

Wenger has done wonderful things at 兵器庫 but he has been 補佐官d by an 時代 that has placed Europe’s most prestigious club tournament beyond the reach of all but a few. If his 前任者s had been given that advantage they would surely have played more European football; had Wenger worked with their 制限s he would 誇る nowhere 近づく 180 外見s.

RAYMOND ALL TALK AND VERY LITTLE ACTION

Raymond Verheijen, who we inexplicably need to hear from on all manner of 支配するs these days, has again turned his attention to 兵器庫.

The Dutch fitness coach 地位,任命するd a succession of scathing tweets about their 扱うing of Aaron Ramsey, who 直面するs another lay-off after 緊張するing a hamstring against Galatasaray.

‘His 傷害 記録,記録的な/記録する at 兵器庫 is 簡単に shocking for such a young player,’ he said. ‘Thankfully, Cesc Fabregas was able to escape 兵器庫 after a few years, so the amateurs in London did not get a chance to destroy his 団体/死体.’

In the past, Verheijen has been 批判的な of David Moyes, 加える the 政権s at Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Chelsea, Feyenoord and むちの跡s ― where he rose to outspoken prominence as 権利-手渡す man to Gary 速度(を上げる).

As Verheijen is 明確に so knowledgeable it makes one wonder why other high-profile Dutch 経営者/支配人s such as Louis 先頭 Gaal and Ronald Koeman are not clamouring to work with him ― or any 経営者/支配人s at all, considering Verheijen’s account 現在/一般に 促進するs only his work with something called the World Football 学院.

AND WHILE WE'RE AT IT...

It is 平易な, によれば the Football 協会’s new 長,率いる of 業績/成果 Services ― yes, 本気で ― to be 冷笑的な about 革新.

‘My 職業 here is to ask “why”?’ says Dave Reddin. He made his 指名する as Sir Clive Woodward’s 長,率いる of Fitness at the 勝利を得た Rugby World Cup in 2003.

Reddin takes one of his questions from that period. Why do football 経営者/支配人s 指名する the team so の近くに to kick-off when in rugby the starting XV is known for days??

The Football Association's new Head of Performance Services David Reddin pictured before the Olympics

‘‘I look at that, 特に at international level, and say, why would we do that?’ says Reddin.

‘Why would we not 発表する it 早期に internally, which 許すs everyone to understand what their 役割 is that week? 承認する, if it 漏れるs, the 対立 understand a little bit about the way you’re going to play.

‘But, for me, how do we 準備する best? Are there areas we can 調査する which might give us an advantage? That’s a very generic example. Is there a bit of dogma in there? Yes, there probably is. That’s the way it’s been done.’

新聞記者/雑誌記者s ask ‘why’ a lot, too. So over dinner with Woodward during the British Lions 小旅行する in 2013 I asked him why rugby teams were 指名するd days before the match, meaning the chance of surprising the 対立 with a 戦術の or 職員/兵員 転換 was 減ずるd? He said he didn’t know. It certainly wasn’t his choice. Indeed, he had asked the RFU if he had to 指名する his team 早期に when he was England coach, because he 手配中の,お尋ね者 to keep a few tricks up his sleeve.

To his 失望/欲求不満, he was told it was 議定書.

So it isn’t football that is beset with dogma. England’s 経営者/支配人 could 指名する his starting line-up days, even weeks, in 前進する if he wished ― as Brazil’s Luiz Felipe Scolari did 事前の to the 2002 World Cup, giving the XI for the first game at the same time as he 発表するd his squad ― but they choose to keep it hidden. Rugby coaches, 一方/合間, have no such freedom.?

Brazil 経営者/支配人 Luiz Felipe Scolari (third left) 明らかにする/漏らすd his starting line-up weeks 事前の to the 2002 World Cup

平等に, England’s rugby coach has been 指名するing his teams in 前進する since 2003, too, and in that time has won no World Cups and no Grand 激突するs.

So maybe it’s not about when you 指名する the team at all. Maybe it is a combination of factors from fitness, to insightful 管理/経営 and gifted players and the real dogma is this need to keep looking outside the box, rather than getting the basics 負かす/撃墜する first.

Reddin remained an 従業員 of the RFU for three years after Woodward 出発/死d, during which many of the best players retired and England finished third, fourth and fourth in the Six Nations. He was 解雇(する)d in 2006, along with Woodward’s 後継者 Andy Robinson. With hindsight, did they ever think of not telling everyone what the team was?
