‘I’m an older 競技者 who was trying to make the team at 陸上競技 and didn’t やめる get there and gets 選ぶd up by a bobsleigh coach and taken on the ride of his life.’
At Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, where 吊りくさび-Francis has trained with the Birchfield Harriers since he was a child, there is not a soul around, only the hum of the M6 motorway muffled by woodland as he 反映するs on a new challenge.
It was here that he finished third in the 国家の 選手権s as a 17-year-old before running a 勝利,勝つd-補助装置d 9.97sec over 100m the next year, the fastest ever by a 十代の少年少女 at the time.
吊りくさび-Francis is 的ing a メダル at the next winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018
The move by 吊りくさび-Francis has been compared to the film 冷静な/正味の Runnings about the Jamaican bobsleigh team made up of former (短距離で)速く走る人s who competed at the 1988 Winter オリンピック in?Calgary
Over the years he has won many 国家の 肩書を与えるs にもかかわらず not やめる 配達するing on the 驚くべき/特命の/臨時の 約束 he showed as a youngster.?
This year, for the first time in more than a 10年間, 吊りくさび-Francis 行方不明になるd out on the 裁判,公判s for the World 選手権s in Beijing.
‘I was a bit 負かす/撃墜する at the time and a text from Michael Khmel arrived asking if I’d consider joining the British bobsleigh 体制/機構 and it took me いっそう少なく than a second to 令状 支援する 説 I’d be up for it,’ says 吊りくさび-Francis, who 錨,総合司会者d 広大な/多数の/重要な Britain to a shock 4x100m gold メダル at the Athens Olympics in 2004 when Khmel was relay coach.
The 33-year-old trained for 広大な/多数の/重要な Britain bobsleigh team in September and (機の)カム sixth out of 35 competitors
‘I remember watching the Sochi Olympics last year and the bobsleigh more than anything else, because it’s like the winter sport 同等(の) of the 100m, the blue riband event.?
'I was thinking, “I wouldn’t mind giving that a go” and then the Canadian team 衝突,墜落d 不正に and slid all the way 負かす/撃墜する to the finish line.
‘On YouTube they only show the 衝突,墜落s so it is a bit scary but I’m a bit of a daredevil, I like to go out there and try different sports. I’m a little bit of a petrolhead, too, I shouldn’t really be on motorbikes but it’s my passion.?
He 収容する/認めるs the 移行 has been harder than he imagined as it 連合させるs strength, technique and spped
'On a motorbike I have 支配(する)/統制する of steering, ブレーキs and gears 反して in bobsleigh I’m 持つ/拘留するing on for dear life and that’s the difference.
‘When I first 押し進めるd on the 押し進める 跡をつける I was 極端に nervous and when you 追加する the three other people I was like, “承認する, what are you doing, 示す?”
‘I think as sportspeople we いつかs arrogantly think we can do whatever, but your 団体/死体 is used to doing one thing and for me it’s running in a straight line on a 跡をつける, no t on ice.?
'Going to bobsleigh, I thought with the 速度(を上げる) I’d be up there with some of the best but that’s not the 事例/患者 ― it’s 50 per cent strength, 25 per cent technique and 25 per cent 速度(を上げる).’
吊りくさび-Francis still 計画(する)s to come 支援する into sprinting and has not given up hope of making the Rio Olympics
吊りくさび-Francis had never tried any winter sport until September, when he (機の)カム sixth out of 35 in a bobsleigh 押し進める 競争 in Switzerland.?

As a (短距離で)速く走る人 he occasionally struggled with his 負わせる. ‘I was いつかs a bit 激しい,’ he says. ‘I 現在/一般に 重さを計る 94kg and the ideal for a (短距離で)速く走る人 is 88kg, but for the bobsleigh it’s 95/96kg so I’m spending a lot of time in the gym at the moment.
‘I’ve pulled a tyre in sprint training but not done anything to do with 押し進めるing at all, 陸上競技 is about pulling through, getting to the finish line.
‘With the (頭が)ひょいと動く it’s 肉親,親類d of like transferring the 力/強力にする and 速度(を上げる) into the sled, which is not as 平易な as it sounds. My shoulders, biceps and triceps are all 燃やすing but I hope it’s going to help with my sprinting. Over the first 60m I’m going to be 爆発性の and that’s usually my weak point.’
The (短距離で)速く走る人 believes he is the calibre of 競技者 that can keep g oing 深い into his thirties
Unlike (短距離で)速く走る人s such as Simeon Williamson and Craig Pickering who have switched to bobsleigh at the end of their careers, 吊りくさび-Francis 計画(する)s to come 支援する to the 跡をつける and 試みる/企てる to make the team for the Rio Olympics next summer.
‘When I was young I didn’t have to put in so much hard work because it (機の)カム 自然に and I definitely took that for 認めるd,’ he says.
‘Now as an older 競技者 I have to 回復する 井戸/弁護士席 because if I don’t I’ll get 負傷させるd. But I still feel I can run the 100m in 10.3sec and if I train as hard as I know I can, then maybe I can do it in 10.1sec.
‘Marlon Devonish and Jason Gardener 奮起させる me because they retired at an older age and Kim Collins is still running world-基準 times. I believe I’m that calibre of 競技者.?
'I know there’s a lot of 競争 with the younger guys and I’m no spring chicken but I believe I can get into the relay team. It’s been two years since I competed for 広大な/多数の/重要な Britain so it would be amazing, standing on the start line 審理,公聴会 a stadium 十分な of people, ready to compete, 神経s running through my 団体/死体.’
The (短距離で)速く走る人's career high (機の)カム in 2004 when he 錨,総合司会者d the 4x100m men's relay team to gold in Athens
If 吊りくさび-Francis is able to 勝利,勝つ an Olympic メダル in the four-man bobsleigh in 2018, he will deserve his place in the history 調書をとる/予約するs.
American (短距離で)速く走る人 Lauryn Williams won 4x100m gold in 2012 and silver at the Sochi Olympics in the two-woman (頭が)ひょいと動く just two years later, but he would be the first Brit.?
‘I think I am 有能な of really 追加するing to a team,’ says 吊りくさび-Francis. ‘In 2004 we were underdogs and went into the Games believing we could 達成する one of the biggest things in 陸上競技.?
'I held off the world’s fastest man Maurice Greene on the 錨,総合司会者 脚 in the last 20m and I believe I can take that over to bobsleigh.’
Although not 現在/一般に a 基金d 競技者, 吊りくさび-Francis has wisely used his 収入s from a long 運動競技のs career.?
吊りくさび-Francis, Marlon Devonish, Darren Campbell and Jason Gardener 提起する/ポーズをとる with their gold メダルs in 2004
‘I made a lot of money out of 陸上競技 and 投資するd it the 権利 ways, with a couple of 所有物/資産/財産s, but I will need some 後援 to carry on over the next four or five years. I have three children 老年の 13, seven and eight months.
‘I’m definitely not doing this to 証明する anything to anybody, I’m doing it for me and my family. I’m a strong, quick 競技者 that can 押し進める a (頭が)ひょいと動く decently so if I can help someone 達成する their goal then I’m going to do it.
‘Everybody leaves school and finds their 職業 and 役割 in life but we’re always looking for that next challenge as human 存在s ― and I think I’ve 設立する 地雷.’
