It started at 5pm last Monday. The first of the two groups of 10 girls waited for a moment while we took their picture and then marched off across the 橋（渡しをする） over the 急ぐing, gurgling River Nevis and away into the もや and the rain of a 荒涼とした evening.?

A few minutes later, the second group 始める，決める off. Soon, they, too, had disappeared into the gloom.

I didn’t know it then but it was the beginning of one of the most 奮起させるing 冒険的な adventures I’ve ever 証言，証人／目撃するd. The Three 頂点（に達する）s Challenge, where walkers have 24 hours to try to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, is frowned on by some because it 法廷，裁判所s danger and exhaustion but then the 願望（する） to 打ち勝つ adversity is often what defines the best of sport.

After we had watched them go, Murray, who was 運動ing the 小型の-bus for the first group, and I drove 支援する to Fort William and had some fish and 半導体素子s, 星／主役にするing at the rain （警官の）巡回区域，受持ち区域ing up off the pavement and thinking about the girls, all members of the University College London Women’s ホッケー Club, who were climbing Britain’s highest mountain in this filthy 天候. I wondered if they might turn 支援する.

Up on the mountain, the same thought occurred to a few of the girls. When they got 近づく to the 首脳会議, other walkers gave them 緊急の 警告s about staying away from the collections of ice and snow that hid sheer 減少（する）s but by then the visibility was so bad they could barely see ten paces in 前線 of them. The first group （機の）カム running out of the もや soon after 9.30pm. My group, bedraggled, sodden and relieved, （機の）カム over the 橋（渡しをする） about 45 minutes later. にもかかわらず the terrible 天候, they knew they had 交渉するd the first part of the challenge in good time. They were still on course to （警官の）巡回区域，受持ち区域 24 hours. They crammed into the 先頭 and we started the long 旅行 south.

It was dark now but on the road to Glencoe, it was still impossible to 行方不明になる the majesty of the mountains rising out of Loch Linnhe beside us.?

The Three 頂点（に達する）s is an extreme physical 実験（する） for walkers who climb 10,000ft and walk 23 miles of 堅い, 法外な 地形 on their 追求（する），探索（する）. But for the drivers, it is a 旅行 through some of the most beautiful of British landscapes, scenery that takes your breath away.

We made it to Wasdale 長，率いる, at the foot of Scafell Pike, just after 4.15am when the first hints of light were starting to illuminate the fells that tower over Wastwater. Sheep and their lambs lay sleeping in the road, 気が進まない to rouse themselves for our 小型の-bus. The girls clambered out and started on their ascent. They were hoping to be 支援する in four hours.

I slept in the 小型の-bus for a while. When I woke, just after 7.30am, the other bus was pulling out of the car park. I wandered out に向かって the mountain to gaze at the scenery and noticed a Mountain 救助（する） 先頭 parked at the 辛勝する／優位 of a nearby field. A group of men were pulling on backpacks. Soon another 乗り物 arrived and more men got out. Then a ヘリコプター appeared over one of the crags. One of the mountain 救助者s lit a ゆらめく and waved it in the 空気／公表する and the ヘリコプター landed in the field, scattering sheep and lambs to its four corners.

I について言及するd to one of the mountain 救助者s as casually as I could that my daughter and a group of her friends were on the mountain. ‘It’s not your daughter,’ he said briskly. ‘Don’ t worry.’

I got a text soon after that. The girls were struggling. Their pace had slowed because one of them had 新たな展開d a 膝 and couldn’t climb any その上の. When they returned, the ones who had stayed took their turn to go to the 最高の，を越す. Then they all walked 負かす／撃墜する together. They got 支援する to the car park at 9.15am and we 始める，決める off for Snowdon.

During the 旅行, one of the girls was scrolling through her phone when she noticed a news item. The 団体／死体 of a 35-year-old man, the 登山者 the Mountain 救助（する） teams had been searching for, had been 設立する on Scafell Pike.
