MARTIN SAMUEL: Why 未来 of Eddie Jones as England 長,率いる coach is the real elephant in the room ahead of the Six Nations

  • No team has won the Six Nations on the 支援する of losing a Rugby World Cup final
  • England 長,率いる coach Eddie Jones will look to buck that 傾向 but it won't be 平易な
  • Jones was telling friends he felt his 雇用者s were looking to 緩和する him out?
  • The Saudis want the wrong 部隊d, they should be 的ing Man Utd instead
  • Marcus Rashford was 準備するing to 飛行機で行く to Miami this 週末 for 最高の Bowl LIV?
  • Novak Djokovic is a true wizard of Oz after reaching the Australian Open final?

The last team to 勝利,勝つ the Six Nations on the 支援する of a losing Rugby World Cup final was ― oh wait, sorry, there isn't one.

England won in 1992, having 以前 lost the final to Australia, and フラン 株d the トロフィー with むちの跡s in 1988 not long after 敗北・負かす by the All 黒人/ボイコットs, but these 勝利s were in the days of the Five Nations.

In the modern 時代, three teams from Europe have gone into the 競争 as losing World Cup finalists and all have been beaten in two of their five games.

Eddie Jones's England side begin their Six Nations campaign away at France on Sunday

Eddie Jones's England 味方する begin their Six Nations (選挙などの)運動をする away at フラン on Sunday

On Sunday, Eddie Jones's England will begin a (選挙などの)運動をする to buck that 傾向. For all his 約束s of brutality and experience to sweep aside the callow French, it will still not be 平易な.

In 2000, フラン lost matches to England and Ireland at home and finished Six Nations 走者s-up.

In 2008, England lost to むちの跡s at Twickenham for the first time in 20 years and were beaten 15-9 by Scotland ― they squeaked home 23-19 against Italy, too.

In 2012, having already lost to England, フラン 苦しむd the 侮辱/冷遇 of a 22-21 逆転する to Italy, the first time they had lost in that fixture, away.

World Cup final 後退s can 配達する aftershocks. Are the team emotionally and mentally exhausted? Does the hunger remain? Does a bread and butter 競争 now underwhelm? These are all valid 審議s.

To which England can 追加する one more ― a coach on a two-year 契約. In a four-year cycle, what happens to the dynamic of the group when the coach might leave at the 中途の 行う/開催する/段階?

This is a problem 純粋に of the RFU's making.

Having put such inten se 強調 on World Cup 業績/成果 with the 新規採用 of a gun-for-雇う coach from Australia, how can they afford such 不確定 at the halfway point before フラン in 2023?

No wonder there appears such 混乱 with Jones feeling 攻撃を受けやすい one moment ― as if 支配(する)/統制する is 存在 ひったくるd from him ― then 納得させるd and settled that his time is coming to an end the next.

Recently, Jones was telling friends that he felt his 雇用者s were looking to 緩和する him out, that an 任命 would be made over his 長,率いる to make his position の近くに to untenable.

A big hitter, a 脅し to his 当局, his mind was spinning with unjustified 共謀 theories. Yet ask him about a 状況/情勢 more than two years hence and he will say it is 非,不,無 of his 商売/仕事.

England are looking to be the first team to win the Six Nations after losing a World Cup final

England are looking to be the first team to 勝利,勝つ the Six Nations after losing a World Cup final

He has two years left on his 契約 and then it will be on to the next 職業. This 現在の 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 is about 扱うing a smooth 移行.

Yet who could 取って代わる Jones, like for like? And s urely that person needs more than two years with his squad ― 特に if the Saracens 次第で変わる/派遣部隊 have been experiencing the ramifications of their 禁止(する), with no prospect of European rugby for at least another year.

Rassie Erasmus was いっそう少なく than two years in 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 of South Africa before 解除するing the Webb Ellis トロフィー last November, but he was に引き続いて the unimpressive Allister Coetzee. It will be far harder erasing or adapting the methods of a coaching personality as strong as Jones.

Saracens' 運命/宿命 has 支配するd rugby talk since the World Cup final, yet they are in many ways the least of Jones's problems.

As much as he 小衝突s 憶測 away, his own 未来 is the elephant in the room.

Jones is again talking about creating the best team in the world, but how, when the last two years of its 開発 is in the 手渡すs of ― who? A stranger, as yet unknown.

Jones has already identified three 可能性のある problem areas ― complacency, 打ち勝つing 増加するd 期待 and the 改良s 伸び(る)d by 競争相手s through 法廷の examination.

Jones was recently telling friends that?he felt the RFU was looking to ease him out of his job

Jones was recently telling friends that?he felt the RFU was looking to 緩和する him out of his 職業

Jones thinks a team who have reached a World Cup final might believe they do not have to go through that 過程. Yet a fourth problem is the players' reaction to what is now an 暫定的な 経営者/支配人.

Even Sir Alex Ferguson felt his Manchester 部隊d team lost their way the first time he 発表するd his 退職, which is why he kept it a secret until after the league was won, second time around.

After England's last match in Yokohama, Jones spoke about the way teams 発展させる across four-year cycles between World Cups. Players age, lose form, younger 代案/選択肢s 現れる.

Yet England's starting XV in Paris on Sunday will make a virtue of 連続, with Jones 約束ing a physical shock for フラン's young players.

What does that mean? Are フラン already in the 過程 of 準備するing for a home World Cup in いっそう少なく than four years?

And England? What is Jones 準備するing for? Is he now in the 商売/仕事 of 選ぶing this team up or 運動ing it 今後? Is this the start of a two-year 移行 or a two-year audition? One gets the feeling nobody knows, even him.

It could be the start of something big, it could be two years unmoored and drifting.

It's no way to lose a World Cup, let alone 勝利,勝つ one.

SAUDIS WANT THE WRONG UNITED??

More bemusement around the Saudi Arabian 引き継ぎ/買収 of Newcastle when it 漏れるd that the new owners would 回復する fan favourite Rafael Benitez as 経営者/支配人.

Why does a man 価値(がある) £300billion need to 勝利,勝つ 支持者s over with blatan tly 人民党員 stunts? And why is such a 買い手 not in the market for another 部隊d, すなわち Manchester?

There is 広大な/多数の/重要な 可能性のある in Newcastle, true, but Manchester 部隊d have かなり more to 申し込む/申し出, 含むing a 抱擁する 全世界の fan base.

And the Glazers are 投資家s, not custodians. They will have a price, and the Saudis are の中で the few who could afford it.

FLIGHT OF FOLLY FOR RASHFORD??

'Rashford off to 最高の Bowl as he steps up fitness 戦う/戦い,' read the headline. The story 確認するd that, yes indeed, Marcus Rashford was 準備するing to 飛行機で行く to Miami this 週末 for 最高の Bowl LIV between the Kansas City 長,指導者s and the San Francisco 49ers.

やめる where stepping up any fitness 戦う/戦い (機の)カム in was 不明瞭な. Rashford has a 強調する/ストレス fracture of his 支援する. How a 22-hour return 旅行 to Manchester helps that, who knows? All the 脚 room in the world isn't much use to 支援する 条件s on long 運ぶ/漁獲高 flights.

Michael Atherton, who has been troubled by inflammation 問題/発行するs all his life, rose like a 90-year-old from his 商売/仕事 class seat at the end of the flight home from Johannesburg.

Rashford is some weeks away from 十分な 回復, but even so. He doesn't need this and it is amazing Manchester 部隊d are 許すing it.

DON'T AIRBRUSH KOBE'S PAST?

On social マスコミ this week, a lot of people who had never met Kobe Bryant 申し込む/申し出d their thoughts on his sad passing.

There is no question that a hotel maid working at the 宿泊する & Spa at Cordillera, a 訴える手段/行楽地 in Edwards, Colorado, did 会合,会う Bryant on June 30, 2003.

Yet it is her very real memories these same folk want airbrushed from memory.

Felicia Sonmez, a reporter from the Washington 地位,任命する, tweeted a link to a 法廷の account of events that night ― which ended in an 主張 of 強姦 ― and 設立する herself the 犠牲者 of another 肉親,親類d of 強襲,強姦.

Her newspaper 一時停止するd her, shamefully, and tens of thousands directed their 怒り/怒る at her 明らかな insensitivity, calling for her to be 解雇(する)d. The phrase #ByeFelicia ― stolen from the film Friday ― began 傾向ing on Twitter, often from the fingertips of people not 勇敢に立ち向かう enough to use their own 指名するs.

The (激しい)反発 against the (激しい)反発, however, appears to have saved Sonmez from her 臆病な/卑劣な 雇用者s.

The Washington 地位,任命する, 直面するd by an 内部の 反乱 from hundreds of her 同僚s, 含むing Pullitzer Prize 勝利者s, have since 発表するd Sonmez was 有罪の of no more than bad タイミング.

A lot of people who had never met Kobe Bryant offered their thoughts on his sad passing

A lot of people who had never met Kobe Bryant 申し込む/申し出d their thoughts on his sad passing

Even that seems to stretch it a little. Anyone who has read the 詳細(に述べる)s of the 事例/患者 would find them problematic. Bryant, too, 明らかに.

'I want to apologise 直接/まっすぐに to the young woman 伴う/関わるd in this 出来事/事件. I want to apologise to her for my behaviour that night and for the consequences she has 苦しむd in the past year. I now understand how she feels that she did not 同意 to this 遭遇(する),' he wrote, 事前の to settling a 民事裁判所 活動/戦闘.

So まっただ中に the deluge of words eulogising Bryant the 競技者, and the man, there was surely also room for this shade. Sonmez had written about her own experiences of 性の 乱用 in 2018; in the circumstances, her reaction to the unquestioning 祝賀 of Bryant in death was hardly out of character.

Yet this remains the 窮地. Separating the 競技者 from the human 存在.

It can happen in life, too, as the organisers of the Australian Open are discovering as they grapple around the 承認 of Margaret 法廷,裁判所.

I wrote this newspaper's 尊敬の印 to Bryant on Sunday, the one that appeared in the sports pages the next day. Three 4半期/4分の1s in, I paused and wondered whether to 含む について言及する of the 強姦 主張 against him.

I decided it didn't feel 権利 to 記録,記録的な/記録する that, but not other 面s of his personal life. So the piece 限られた/立憲的な itself to Bryant the baller, to his 影響(力) on the sport, his 運動競技の style, the 尊敬(する)・点 of his peers. But that doesn't mean there are not other stories to be told; and because some 会葬者s do not want to hear them, it does not mean they do not 存在する.

This newspaper has received a (民事の)告訴 from 行方不明になる Chiara Giuffrida in relation to an article from January 15 headlined: 'Manchester City 星/主役にするs flew 22 Italian models to £150-a-night Cheshire hotel for 'Bunga-Bunga' party to cele brate 6-1 勝利,勝つ.'

SALA'S WORTH TO CARDIFF: NOTHING?

Cardiff made a 深く心に感じた show of sadness and noble 記念 on the 周年記念日 of Emiliano Sala's death. That has been their 戦略 all along: admirable dignity in 前線 of the cameras.

Yet, in 法廷,裁判所 papers, it is 明らかにする/漏らすd what Sala's life was really 価値(がある) to them: nothing.

This is what the club now want to 支払う/賃金 for Sala, who believed he was 飛行機で行くing to a 未来 in the 首相 League when he died. Cardiff began by 要点説明 they would 会合,会う their 義務s regarding Sala and 明言する/公表するing 公然と that they were an honourable club.

This 速く degenerated into a horrid 合法的な squabble about money. Now a year on, Cardiff paint themselves as 選挙運動者s relating to the use of flights in football and the 役割 of intermediaries in 移転s; neither of which seemed to 大いに 関心 them until they were landed with a dead striker and a £15m 法案. For his family, the 影響 must be almost as heartbreaking as the 悲劇.

THE ERIKSEN DILEMMA?

Soon after Christian Eriksen 調印するd for Tottenham in 2013, I met a group of Ajax fans. I asked their opinion of him. They extolled his many virtues as one of the finest players in the Eredivisie, but said in some games, 特に some of th e big ones, he went 行方不明の.

Now Eriksen has 調印するd for の間の Milan. One wonders if an Italian 新聞記者/雑誌記者 idly chatting with some Tottenham fans might elicit the same answer.

CRAZY COST OF DAFT DEADLINES?

West Ham had agreed their 料金 for Tomas Soucek, and then the call (機の)カム. Slavia Prague would like this to be a Czech 記録,記録的な/記録する, it was said ― so they would only do a 取引,協定 for an 付加 £200,000.

Reluctantly, it was agreed. Then another call. Now the 料金 was rising by a その上の £500,000. If this was the summer, West Ham would have told them to get lost. But the January 移転 window is different.

Clubs buying in January are 普通は 事実上の/代理 out of necessity and under 広大な/多数の/重要な 圧力. So Slavia got their bit extra and West Ham got their player. This can only happen while clubs 課す 人工的な, unnecessary 最終期限s o n their 商売/仕事. Yet, bizarrely, some of them want even more.

NOVAK'S A TRUE WIZARD OF OZ?

Novak Djokovic has reached the 半分-final of the Australian Open eight times. He has never lost.

As impressive is his 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of vanquished 対抗者s: Roger Federer, Federer, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Stan Wawrinka, Federer, Lucas Pouille and Federer. Not many rabbits in that 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) ― and やめる a lot of Federer.
