In the 最新の of our 時折の series on the travel wheres and whys of the celebrity world, 新聞記者/雑誌記者 John Simpson 明らかにする/漏らすs how getting away becomes more exciting the older he gets and why his four-year-old son is the ideal travel companion...

FAVOURITE DESTINATION?

Africa ― from Algeria, Egypt and Ghana through to its southern tip. Its infinite variety, natural grandeur and people 与える/捧げる to a unique mix of 解放する/自由な-spirited fun and adventure. I always feel the continent evokes big emotions.

Nature's Valley in South Africa is the finest place to have a holiday.

DESCRIBE IT?

A small village in a nature reserve in the southern Cape, 残り/休憩(する)ing behind a large, sandy dune with the Indian Ocean on the other 味方する. The beach is a perfect half-moon 港/避難所 between mountains and sea, 砂漠d for much of the year.

It's a last stop for jellyfish washed up from the 深い and the 半端物 human straggler.

BEST ACTIVITIES?

Get knocked 負かす/撃墜する and dragged under by the 広大な/多数の/重要な breakers of the 冷静な/正味の sea or wear fins and, on a 静める day, swim と一緒に イルカs.

Play like a child on the lagoon in a canoe in the 中央の-day sun, take a 法外な walk up the mountains, bring a telescope and look at the 星座s of the southern sky at night ― the 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) is endless.?

STILL INSPIRED?

The older I get, the more I marvel at the 可能性s that a 旅行 opens up.

Yes, it's harder these days to 避ける the sameness that globalisation has exacted all over the 惑星, but if you do choose to take the B-roads you'll almost certainly not be disappointed.

IDEAL COMPANION?

My four-year-old son Rafe. He's my boy, the one I like to carry on my shoulders. He's open to all his 注目する,もくろむs can take in, he's friendly to all that is foreign and is really excited to be going, and arriving, somewhere. He do esn't complain, doesn't 裁判官 and doesn't bore me.

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS?

Electronic 調書をとる/予約するs, my laptop with a growing library of films 範囲ing from the Marx Brothers to Woody Allen and an iPod or two.

HOLIDAY READ?

Peter Fleming's News From Tartary, a marvellous 調書をとる/予約する with the rare ability to 輸送(する) the most jaded individual into his space and time. And always Dickens.

Unreliable Sources ― How The 20th Century Was 報告(する)/憶測d, by John Simpson (Macmillan, £20).
