Britain - in 楽園! Inside Bermuda, the island that 申し込む/申し出s pink beaches, turquoise waters, impressive shipwrecks - and familiar trappings of British life

People assume that Bermuda is in the Caribbean. In fact, it’s almost 1,000 miles to the north-east, 孤立するd 深い in the 大西洋 Ocean, about level with Charles?トン in South Carolina.

Yet its British 関係s feel even stronger than in most of the Caribbean.

Perhaps that’s because policemen still wear bobbies’ helmets (at 確かな times) to direct the traffic; 地元のs play cricket and the remote 解決/入植地 is 公式に a ??British Overseas 領土 run by a 知事 任命するd by the King. It’s the oldest of the 14 overseas 領土s, dating from the 早期に 17th century.

Bermuda’s pink beaches, turquoise waters and sherbet-coloured houses have been seducing 訪問者s for aeons.

As my 計画(する) touches 負かす/撃墜する on the 群島 構成するing 181 islands ? though the biggest are linked by 橋(渡しをする)s to form a main land-form of about 24 miles long and one mile wide ? the party begins.?

My arrival 同時に起こる/一致するs with a four-day carnival in June, although any time of year is pleasant to visit. It’s 23-27c in October and rarely 減少(する)s below 18-20c.

Bermuda was once known as the 小島 of Devils, 予定 to ferocious 嵐/襲撃するs, screeching seabirds and 背信の 珊瑚 暗礁s. The 嵐/襲撃するs 原因(となる)d many shipwrecks (which is why it is famously called the ‘Bermuda Triangle’) and today ?Bermuda is home to more than 300 難破させるs that 申し込む/申し出 みごたえのある 飛び込み and snorkelling 適切な時期s.

Staying at the chic Rosewood ?Bermuda, I step on board the hotel’s 32ft catamaran for a snorkel 巡航する, and spend a morning bobbing about in turquoise waters の中で 有望な-green parrotfish and multi-coloured 珊瑚. 支援する on 乾燥した,日照りの land, I 長,率いる to the nearby 水晶 and Fantasy 洞穴s, two of the island’s 星/主役にする attractions.

The に引き続いて day we 長,率いる to St George, the oldest continuously 住むd English town in the Americas. Here, we visit the Gothic Unfinished Church and Tucker House. The latter was once home to 陸軍大佐 Henry Tucker who ?finagled 供給(する)ing gun 砕く to the Americans during the War of Independence.?

Afterwards, Wahoo’s Bistro is perfect for a tasty fish 挟む made with 深い-fried wahoo and topped with tartar sauce and coleslaw.

Taxis are one way to get around Bermuda, but a Renault Twizy, a two-seater electric micro car, is much more fun. Jumping in one I 長,率いる to Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve, where chef Doreen ?Williams-James, who uses native fruits, vegetables and herbs in her cooking, 申し込む/申し出s a ?foraging 小旅行する in the 12-acre park.

Hamilton, the 資本/首都, is a must-visit for its boutiques, botanical gardens and rainbow-coloured 前線 Street, where restaurants and 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業s buzz until the 早期に hours.

A visit to the western tip of the main island, where the Bermuda 鉄道 追跡する starts, is a final day 扱う/治療する. Between 1931 and 1948, the ‘Old 動揺させる and Shake’ フェリー(で運ぶ)d islanders along the coastline. Today, 18 of the 鉄道’s 初めの 22 miles have been transformed into a walking and cycling path with sublime 見解(をとる)s.

Later, it’s cocktail time at the Swizzle Inn which serves ‘the best’ (によれば its owner, Jay Correia) potent Rum Swizzle cocktails.
