Fez for under £100 per night! How to visit the 中世 Moroccan city on the cheap

Lesser-known than its famous sibling Marrakech, Fez is home to the world's largest car-解放する／自由な 都市の area and the mother of all medinas with few trapping of the modern world except electricity.?

Tourists are still a 少数，小数派 in this 中世 city ― yet it's just a three-hour flight from the UK.

Where to stay

Dar Roumana

High 天井s, mosaic tiled 床に打ち倒すs, four-poster beds, stained glass windows and berber rugs are on of fer at this boutique hotel. You'll find homemade shampoo, conditioner and 団体／死体 lotion in the pretty ensuite bathrooms and will quickly become part of the family (the hotel even has its own 居住（者） tortoise called Eddy). Riad Laaroussa

The peace of this central 17th-century former palace is in 完全にする contrast to the mayhem of the medina outside its lofty 塀で囲むs. Colour-主題d stately rooms surround an impressive three-storey 中庭 filled with blossoming orange trees. Dar Seffarine

One of the first boutique hotels to open in the medina, the rooms of this 回復するd 15th-century former home feature mosaic 床に打ち倒すs, cedar 支持を得ようと努めるd 天井s and 初めの features. What to see and do

The streets of Fez are bursting with an amazing array of leather, rug and aromatic food 立ち往生させるs

Get lost and shop in the medina.

Start at the Blue Gate that 示すs the 入り口 to the 9th-century labyrinthine medina and make your way 負かす／撃墜する the hill which leads to the Chouara Tannery.

Go off 跡をつける and 調査する the tiny streets bursting with an amazing array of le ather, rug and aromatic food 立ち往生させるs that 支店 off the main road. Of course buy a rug, but 避ける the famous, but overpriced, Coin Berbere.

Instead, 長，率いる to the no-圧力 Rainbow Street Art Fez selling rugs, 地元の art and leather goods. The alley itself, with wildly painted 床に打ち倒すs and 塀で囲むs, is truly a work of art.

小旅行する the Chouara Tanneries

There are three leather tanneries in and around Fez but the largest and best-known is the 11th-century Chouara Tannery at the foot of the medina.

Follow your nose and watch 労働者s 乾燥した，日照りのing out saffron-dyed leather and using their 団体／死体 負わせる to mix the brightly coloured liquid around the tannery 炭坑，オーケストラ席s in the searing heat.

Make sure you 選ぶ up some 解放する／自由な sprigs of 造幣局 to 持つ／拘留する under your nostrils as you walk out の上に one of the many terraces to 見解（をとる） the pungent 炭坑，オーケストラ席s below.

The world-class leather shops that surround the tannery form a 協同組合 with those 労働者s below.

Sunset at Riad Fes

Watch the sky turn pink over the medina and on to the Atlas Mountains with a cocktail or surprisingly tasty Moroccan ワイン on Riad Fes's famous roof terrace.

Though rooms are on the pricey 味方する, drinks aren't and the barmen will 確実にする you get 伴う／関わるd in the festivities as 地元の musicians strum their guitars and sing in Arabic (riadfes.com).

Have a hammam

A trip to Morocco is not 完全にする without a 伝統的な hammam. The bathing ritual at Yuba Cyn Spa 伴う／関わるs 存在 scrubbed and then washed with 黒人／ボイコット soap made from olive oil before settling 負かす／撃墜する for a massage with argan oil. From £32 (yubacynspa.com).

Sip sugary 造幣局 tea

据えるd in a former rubbish tip with no roof, The 廃虚d Garden serves some of the best food in the city. Dreadlocked waiters bring マリファナs of spices and 鎮圧するd green chilli to go with crusty bread and olive oil. The garden is おもに shaded by large foliage. Dar Roumana

Start with a drink on the roof terrace with 見解（をとる）s of the medina before dining in the hotel's restaurant decorated with colourful mosaic tiling and carved cedar 支持を得ようと努めるd. The menu 申し込む／申し出s mains such as smoked octopus on paprika avocado, lamp kefta and 幅の広い bean and artichoke salad (from £5.50). Staff can collect you from your riad (darroumana.com).

Cafe Clock

Lanterns hang from the 天井 of this quirky restaurant 始める，決める on a 一連の shaded terraces. W alls are decorated with Arabic scripture and hipster 絵s. Try the delicious Fez platter of roasted egg 工場／植物, olives, spiced beetroot, green beans and dates (£4.90, enough for two) ― and the famous camel burger (£7.70)(cafeclock.com).

Dar Hatim

This authentic, welcoming restaurant with ornate painted 天井 is 始める，決める in the ground 床に打ち倒す of the Bouaa family home. It serves several three-course 始める，決める menus (from £18) 含むing juicy lamb tagine, chicken pastilla and seasonal salads. 19, Derb Ezaouia Fandak.
