広大な／多数の／重要な galleries galore

Art, or, more 特に, architecture, put the Basque port of Bilbao on the tourist 地図／計画する when Frank Gehry's Guggenheim opened in 1997.

Hoping to cash in on "the Bilbao 影響", towns from Turin to Fort 価値（がある） are 開始 sensational galleries that may 証明する that it's not just what you've got, it's how you flaunt it.

TURIN

When Gianni Agnelli, the 名誉として与えられる chairman of Fiat, died in January, he lay in 明言する／公表する not in a church but in the new art gallery he opened to the public last September.

The Pinacoteca Gianni e Marella Agnelli (Tel: 00 39 011 0061735) appears to balance on the roof of Fiat's 初めの car 工場／植物, Lingotto, transformed by Renzo Piano (co-architect of the Pompidou Centre) to support a glass-andsteel "scrigno", or "jewel box", with a striking curved underside, that looks as though it has alighted from space.

Inside hang 25 remarkable 作品 by Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Manet, Renoir, Canaletto, Tiepolo, Severini and others - once Agnelli's 私的な collection, now 寄付するd to the city. Also in the building is a concert hall, shopping 商店街 and M?ridien hotel.

MUNICH

Munich has a new art gallery in the Pinakothek der Moderne (Tel: 00 49 89 2 38 05 360, www.pinakothek-der-moderne.de) which opened last September to house, の中で other 作品, a fascinating collection of 絵s 押収するd and 非難するd as degenerate by the Nazis.

Munich architect Stephan Braunfels's design is an 厳格な，質素な if impressive box, whose uncompromising 固める／コンクリート-and-glass exterior hardly 準備するs you for the intriguingly luminous, sky-lit, white galleries that 支店 off a stark, threestorey rotunda, lit by a central oculus or "注目する，もくろむ" that 事業／計画（する）s spider's-web 影をつくる／尾行するs.

This is a mu seum where architecture 認めるs that it is 第２位 to art and yet in doing so より勝るs itself. If the 現在の Max Beckmann show at Tate Modern has given you a taste for German Expressionism, go now.

EINDHOVEN

再開するd in January after a five-year 終結, the hitherto little-known 先頭 Abbemuseum (Tel: 00 31 40 238 10 00, www.vanabbemuseum.nl) 設立するd by a cigar 製造業者 in 1936, is 先触れ（する）d as one of Europe's best 同時代の-art museums.

It helps that its collection 含む／封じ込めるs work by Joseph Beuys, Donald Judd, Gerhard Richter, Bruce Nauman, Douglas Gordon, Rachel Whiteread and Frank Stella, 同様に as Picasso, Kandinsky, Chagall, Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky.

Abel Cahen's 積極性 angled, grey-tiled 拡張 juxtaposes strikingly with the staid, symmetrical red brickwork of the 初めの. Inside, there's a 類似の 衝突／不一致, not least in the 床に打ち倒すing: dark, polished 支持を得ようと努めるd versus squeaky grey resin.

FORT WORTH

Art 資本／首都 of Texas, the Fort 価値（がある） Modern Art Museum (Tel: 001 817 738 9215, www.themodern.org) opened last December, designed by Tadao Ando, his largest 事業／計画（する） outside his native Japan. Opposite the Louis I Kahn-designed Kimbell Art Museum, five majestic, lantern-like, flat-roofed, concreteand-glass pavilions seem to float on water.

Inside, the exquisitely lit 5,000sq metre space will host 展示s 同様に as house a 永久の collection of 2,600 作品 by Anselm Kiefer, Jackson Pollock, Gerhard Richter, Susan Rothenberg, Sean Scully, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol.

BEACON, NEW YORK

Think you're au fait with all that New York has to 申し込む／申し出? Think again. On 18 May, Dia:Beacon (Tel: 001 212 989 5566, www.diabeacon.org) opens. It is larger than the 連合させるd galleries of the Guggenheim, Whitney and Museum of Modern Art, on a 31-acre 場所／位置 と一緒に the Hudson River, 80 minutes from Grand Central 駅／配置する.

The space has been 変えるd from a 1929 functionalist Nabisco printworks by architects Open Office in 共同 with the artist Robert Irwin to produce 3,200sq metres of still palpably 産業の-feel, roof-lit space, 会社にする／組み込むing 3,700sq metres of glass and a forest of columns.

The collection 焦点（を合わせる）s mostly on outsize 作品 by American artists Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Bruce Nauman, Richard Serra, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol and others.
