Does Chitty go with a bang?

Yes, the car, good old Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, 飛行機で行くs over the 前線 立ち往生させるs, sprouting wings like a 幻覚的な bat.

And its first 外見, gleaming like the magnificent old antique of racing car legend, is 拍手喝采する with the clap-happy, sing-a-long enthusiasm of a （人が）群がる at an ice-skating 競争.

The 1968 movie has been transposed to the 行う／開催する／段階 - pretty faithfully and with some clever 改良s - and is likely to 証明する the most popular children's show in town.

It certainly delighted last night's audience, which 含むd Pierce Brosnan and Oscar-勝利者 Halle Berry, 星／主役にするs of the 最新の James 社債 film - 007 author Ian Fleming, of course, wrote the 初めの Chitty Chitty Bang Bang novel.

Parents will remember 刑事 先頭 Dyke and Sally Ann Howes in the film and be not at all 狼狽d by the jolly, chubby presence of Michael Ball and pert, 有望な new talented 十代の少年少女 Emma Williams in their stead.

Ball is Caractacus Potts, the Edwardian inventor who can never 攻撃する，衝突する the jackpot.

Williams is Truly Scrumptious, the rich girl next door who is 素早い行動d off as a surrogate mother to Caractacus's two children and 落ちるs in love with Dad.

They 追求する kidnapped Grandpa (Anton Rodgers) to the fantasy land of Vulgaria, where the Childcatcher (Richard O'Brien of Rocky Horror fame) is the biggest child hater since King Herod.

Adrian Noble's 生産／産物, ingeniously designed by Anthony 区, has already taken £8million in 前進する bookings, and is probably 免疫の to disrespectful comment.

But an 課すd prologue of Chitty's pedigree as a Grand Prix racer in Vulgaria 土台を崩すs the narrative unruliness of the story, pretending that there is some homogeneity to the 訴訟／進行s.

This is a 甚だしい／１２ダース 知識人 hoodwink. Noble runs the RSC and is anxious to 証明する his 信任状.

Mercifully, his choreographer, Gillian Lynne, who did Cats for Trevor Nunn, retreads old music hall 決まりきった仕事s and regresses into bo bbing up and 負かす／撃墜する quick steps.

Thank heavens, also, in the second 行為／法令／行動する, for Nichola McAuliffe, sensational as Baroness Bomburst in Vulgaria, who enlivens the Chu-Chi 直面する comedy number with Brian Blessed's tiresome old Baron and then 爆発するs sexily in a new samba number at the 城 birthday party.

Jeremy Sams, the adaptor, has squeezed the last half hour of the film into a clever finale; and the music box item for the disguised dolls is mightily 効果的な.

Mr Ball sings Hushabye Mountain, the best ballad, with real charm and relish.

But he has too little to do. And there is something finally unsatisfactory about a show that pleases so easily but fails to be a 広大な／多数の／重要な musical.
