Car for Carey Mulligan! New British 'It-girl' and girlfriend of Shia LaBeouf is 運命にあるd for big things in Hollywood

Film studios are throwing scripts at Carey Mulligan. She's the new British 'It-girl' and Hollywood has always been able to 位置／汚点／見つけ出す the new 直面する from across the pond.

'It's the Julie Christie thing. We loved her 支援する in the Sixties in Darling and kept on loving her,' a member of the 学院 of 動議 Picture Arts and Sciences told me.

'There's a 確かな type of British actress we embrace - like Kate Winslet, Emily Blunt or Keira Knightley. Carey's the new girl and people are 落ちるing in love with her.'

And this （機の）カム after the 学院 member had …に出席するd an Oscar 審査 of An Education - the film that has propelled London-based Carey from 'Who's she?' to 'Must see' when it comes to 会合 studio 長，率いるs, directors and 影響力のある casting directors.

U.S. Vogue 明確に thinks she's hot. Fabled fashion tsarina Grace Coddington styled six pages of photographs of Carey in the January 問題／発行する.

In a couple of the 発射s, she looks just like Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. But, in fact, in a few scenes in An Education, Carey channels Audrey.

'She' s fresh and she's hot,' Peter Rice, who was 長，率いる of Fox サーチライト, told me when we watched the world 首相 審査 of An Education at the Sundance Film Festival 12 months ago.

Not so long ago, elfin-直面するd Carey, 24, would use public-輸送（する） to get to auditions in Los Angeles. Now, film companies send a car.

Yet 非，不，無 of the high-octane attention has gone to her 長，率いる. She turned up on the 始める，決める of Never Let Me Go (Rice 示唆するd she be auditioned) on her day off because she felt it would help the young actress who was playing the younger 見解／翻訳／版 of her character.

So instead of staying at home in North London, she 旅行d across town to Ham, Surrey. And she got there by Tube and bus.

But she'll be riding in a リムジン to the 国家の Board of Review's 年次の shindig in New York next Tuesday, when she'll collect the best actress honour for An Education.

And, by the way, the film's been a 勝利 for director 孤独な Scherfig, BBC Films, 生産者s Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey, and screenwriter Nick Hornby.

The movie has 指名／任命s from the 審査する Actors Guild (SAG), while Dwyer and Posey are up for best film from the 生産者s Guild of America - a good 指示する人（物） of a possible best picture 学院 Award 指名／任命. And かもしれない a best actress one for Carey.

But before all that she has the Golden Globe, SAG, U.S. Broadcast Critics, London Film Critics' Circle and Bafta awards - 同様に as a handful of other shows - to …に出席する.

一方／合間, she's having the 時折の singing lesson because it helps keep her 発言する／表明する in 削減する for all the red carpets she has to sashay along.

At the same time, Carey Mulligan is giving Hollywood a master-class in grace.

Phantom Of The オペラ sequel Love Never Dies is like a theatrical 見解／翻訳／版 of Avatar, in that it's a long-を待つd work from a 巨大（な） of the genre, it will (hopefully) 押し進める musical theatre 今後 as Phantom did in its day, and it will (hopefully) make lots of money.

The 生産者s are 明白に looking at how many tickets have been sold - so far, the 前進する is £8.5 million. But the 最初の／主要な 焦点（を合わせる） is on getting the show 権利 and the behind-the-scenes work has been going on for more than a year, so it is more than '権利' by 開始 night.

The 得点する／非難する／２０ is certainly melodic and finds Andrew Lloyd Webber at his most haunting and romantic. Director Jack O'Brien was at pre-rehearsals on Monday working with singers and ダンサーs, and going over さまざまな circus stunts and illusions.

Next week, the 十分な company will 組み立てる／集結する and be divided up into groups at a theatrical rehearsal コンビナート／複合体 in South London.

Centrepiece in the largest of the halls 存在 used is a 巨大（な） '回転する', costing some £100,000, which will 似ている the 回転するing 行う／開催する／段階 that is about to be 任命する／導入するd at the Adelphi Theatre, where Love Never Dies will begin previews on February 20.

The 回転する will be used only for the four weeks the Love Never Dies folks are south of the river, although it can be 取り去る／解体するd and shipped for LND 生産／産物s in New York and Sydney.

It's certainly the biggest - and most important - musical of the year. And, as O'Brien 観察するd, 'it brings 十分な circle what Andrew has been doing for the past ４半期/4分の1 of a century'.

It's a 得点する／非難する／２０ 十分な of the emotion of the 作曲家's life.

Kate Winslet: British actress will play Mildred Pierce

Kate's tasty recipe to show why she's not just an upper-crust girl

Kate Winslet has been honing her pie-making 技術s - for a 役割 in which she has to appear as if she was born knowing how to make a crust. The Oscar-winning actress will play the eponymous Mildred Pierce in a television miniseries based on the novel by James M. Cain.

Joan Crawford won an 学院 Award for the 1945 movie 見解／翻訳／版 of the story about a 離婚d working mother in 不景気-時代 southern California who is 軍隊d to bake pies and work as a waitress to 持続する her middle-class lifestyle.

In fact, Kate is already a pretty good cook and when I first met her she was in her teens waiting （米）棚上げする／（英）提議するs at a cafe in Regent's Park. 狙撃 will begin in New England - handy to be 近づく Kate's children - in 中央の-March after Kate has 実行するd her 義務s as a presenter at the Hollywood Foreign 圧力（をかける） 協会's Golden Globe awards event on January 17 and the Oscars 儀式 on March 7.

The 初めの movie 異なるd from Cain's hard-boiled 調書をとる／予約する. For starters, in the Forties filmmakers could only hint at some of the things Cain was 調査するing on the page.

The new adaptation - scripted and directed by Todd Haynes - will follow Cain's structure more closely, and Haynes will 示す it with his own glossy, stylish stamp. And it's a helluva catch to get the most 最近の best actress Oscar, Bafta and Golden Globe 受取人 (she won some for The Reader, others for 革命の Road) to play Mildred.

Movie 星／主役にするs often shun TV, but a 広大な／多数の／重要な 役割 is a 広大な／多数の／重要な 役割, whether it's on the small or big 審査する. And, 率直に, there aren't that many classy big-審査する pictures 存在 made in which actresses have the central 役割s.

Mildred is a stupendous character to play. She's not afraid of hard work, is attracted to unsuitable men, has a bonedeep 核心 of toughness (running your own 商売／仕事 in the dirtpoor Thirties wasn't 平易な), but her 致命的な 証拠不十分 is giving in to her 年上の daughter, Veda.

Veda's a manipulative monster of a child. We first 会合，会う her in the 調書をとる／予約する 老年の 11; by 13 she's like a devil child, screeching at her mother about 'your chickens and your pies and your kitchens and everything that smells of grease'.

It's marvellously trashy stuff, and between them Haynes and his 主要な lady will spin it into small-審査する art.

Saucy escape from the Twilight zone

Robert Pattinson begins rehearsals next month with a line-up of 主要な ladies 含むing Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci.

And that's just for starters. They will be 準備するing for a 審査する 見解／翻訳／版 of Guy de Maupassant's 19th-century novel Bel Ami about a 完全に shameless Lothario who goes through life with an open 飛行機で行く.

Pattinson, who saunters through those Twilight movies like a tomcat who lapped up a lot of cream, will play Georges Duroy, a Frenchman of humble beginnings who 作品 his way up from 存在 a minor office clerk to become a powerful editor 所有するing 広大な／多数の／重要な political 影響（力）.

Each rung up the ladder 代表するs the 影響（力） of a powerful woman. More often than not, once he has finished with them he starts on their daughters. Thurman will play Madeleine, Duroy's first conquest.

Ricci takes on the 役割 of Clotilde, whose husband is often away, and Scott Thomas plays Virginie, the wife of Duroy's editor-in-長，指導者. He likes her daughter, too.

Directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod are 会合 three other actresses who will play women with whom Duroy also associates.

The directing 二人組 are from the theatre and are adept at working with classic texts and making them entertaining and accessible. More importantly, they also know how to get the best work out of their cast.

The picture is 存在 produced by Uberto Pasolini, but pop visionary Simon Fuller is (n)役員／(a)執行力のある 生産者 in what is his first foray into big-審査する films.

Mother of a nation: Sophie Okonedo plays Winnie Mandela

Sophie's choice is a real Winnie

Sophie Okonedo said she admired Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's 'don't give a f*** 態度 and bravado', but there were other 特徴 about the oncebeloved former wife of Nelson Mandela that she didn't care for.

After the Oscar-指名するd actress (pictured) 完全にするd filming her portrait - a sort of Lady Macbeth 人物／姿／数字 in the bush - in the excellent BBC4 film Mrs Mandela, she went surfing 'as a 肉親，親類d of detox'.

The film is a scorching 描写 of a woman who to some became the mother of the nation; to others a woman drunk on 力／強力にする.

Yet Mrs Mandela also 示唆するs Winnie's abandonment because of her husband's 監禁，拘置 and how her 治療 by the police changed her 見解（をとる） of the world.

What she 耐えるd was intolerable and there's a sense these 問題／発行するs drove her to become 伴う／関わるd in things that went 'horribly wrong', as she put it to South Africa's Truth and 仲直り （売買）手数料，委託（する）／委員会／権限.

Parts of Sophie's 業績／成果 remind me of my assertive African aunts (believe me, they had to be) and I can only imagine the dark 軍隊s that drove Mrs Mandela to associate with 凶漢s called the Mandela 部隊d Football Club.

The film shies away from 非，不，無 of this. David Harewood portrays Mr Mandela. The film will be 審査するd on BBC4 on January 25.

OmiGod You Guys! The 有毒な pink candyfloss called 合法的に Blonde at the Savoy Theatre is not for me. I saw it in New York and loathed it. On Monday night I was 感謝する for Sheridan Smith and Peter Davison but, really, Ms Smith - a comic firebom b - shouldn't have to stoop to this. She's far superior than the 病弱な shade of bubblegum-pink on 陳列する，発揮する at the Savoy. It gave me gum rot. But I must 報告（する）／憶測 that Elaine and her daughter 足緒 from Surrey, who were sitting next to me, while admitting it was silly, loved it. The 公式の／役人 first night is next week. I hope it has enough box office to 生き残る the 堅い winter.

Musical: Les Dennis will 星／主役にする in a new 生産／産物 of Hairspray

Watch out for...

Les Dennis, who will play Wilbur Turnblad opposite Michael Ball, Brian Conley and Phill Jupitus - the actors who will 株 the 役割 of Edna Turnblad - in the 小旅行するing 生産／産物 of 攻撃する，衝突する musical Hairspray. Laurie Scarth will play their daughter Tracy, with Danny Bayne as Corny Collins, Sandra Marvin as Motormouth Maybelle and Liam Doyle as Link Larkin. The show, which opens at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff in April, will also visit Glasgow, Southampton and Manchester. 小旅行するs are big money these days. The sales for Les 哀れなs and the 来たるべき Calendar Girls road 小旅行する are phenomenal.

Samuel Barnett, Chris Larkin, John Stahl, Kate O'Flynn and Simon Merrells, who are in James Graham's play The Whiskey Taster. James Grieve will direct at the Bush Theatre in West London, with previews beginning on January 20 and the 開始 night on January 26. The play is about how 圧力 c an squeeze out natural gifts - and I don't mean 勝利，勝つd. Graham looks at the world of advertising and how too much of a good thing can be squandered.

David Ames, Ashley George, Sean Verey, Bradley Taylor and Krupa Pattani, who are part of the ensemble company of Philip Ridley's play Moonfleece, which, 初めは, was part of the 脚本家's 物語を話す人／作家 Sequence trilogy. Kathryn Bigelow, the director of the much-acclaimed The 傷つける Locker, who seems more 保証するd of receiving a best director Oscar 指名／任命 now she's on the Director's Guild of America shortlist along with James Cameron for Avatar, 物陰／風下 Daniels for Precious, Jason Reitman for Up In The 空気／公表する, and Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds. It would be やめる something if Ms Bigelow became the first woman to 勝利，勝つ.
