How the Eagles tore each other to shreds: Fights, 麻薬s and girls - the '70s rockers never did take it 平易な

When the Eagles decided to make a career-spanning 文書の, their music was only ever going to be one part of the warts ’n’ all story.

The Eagles redefined West Coast 激しく揺する after forming in Los Angeles in 1972. They sold 120 million albums and 供給するd the soundtrack for a 世代 of baby boomers with 攻撃する,衝突するs like Take It 平易な, One Of These Nights and Hotel California.

But History Of The Eagles, out now on DVD, doesn’t neglect the extra-curricular 味方する of an outfit who lived up to the 肩書を与える of their 1976 song Life In The 急速な/放蕩な 小道/航路. As singer and drummer Don Henley 収容する/認めるs, ‘麻薬s, girls and fights’ ぼんやり現れるd large.

Take the 悪名高い concert in Long Beach, California, in 1980, when 緊張s between guitarists Don Felder and Glenn Frey (機の)カム to an ugly 長,率いる.

Before the show, Frey broke a beer 瓶/封じ込める against the dressing room 塀で囲む. Afterwards, Felder 粉砕するd his guitar before 嵐/襲撃するing off into the night.

The concert - a 利益 gig, no いっそう少なく - was played out まっただ中に muttered onstage 脅しs (all 逮捕(する)d on the DVD). At one point, Frey is caught whispering he is going to kill Felder after ‘three more songs, ass****!’.

The Eagles didn’t play together for another 14 years, Don Henley famously commenting that they would only 再会させる ‘when hell 凍結するs over’. No prizes for guessing what they called their 1994 復帰 小旅行する.

‘We were never really at each other’s throats,’ 主張するs Frey, 64, rather unconvincingly. ‘We specialised in a 静かな turbulence. That Long Beach concert was unfortunate. We fought because we were 熱烈な about the 禁止(する)d.’

‘Men grow up slowly, 特に in the music 商売/仕事,’ 追加するs Henley, 65. ‘We started this 禁止(する)d in our 20s, but we were kids, really. We’ve learned how to 許容する one another now. Our differences are not as 劇の.’

The film’s best (映画の)フィート数 is its 早期に 古記録 構成要素, telling the tale of how Detroit-born Frey (pronounced ‘Fry’) and the Texan Henley met in LA.

They 小旅行するd as Linda Ronstadt’s 支援 禁止(する)d before 開始する,打ち上げるing the Eagles with guitarist Bernie Leadon and bassist Randy Meisner. ‘We lived for the moment,’ Henley tells me. ‘Our label, 亡命, 調書をとる/予約するd us into a club in Aspen, Colorado, because we needed to play to people. It was a 木造の shed, but we had some wild times there. It was a hippy town, and everybody was on 麻薬s.

‘We tempered our bad habits, though. We never let bingeing get in the way of work. I’d drink and take 麻薬s all 週末, but I’d go to the gym on Monday morning to clean it all out. We had a 生き残り instinct ― every 現在の and former member of the Eagles is still alive.’

Mixing country 激しく揺する, catchy pop and finely wrought harmonies, the Eagles 安全な・保証するd an 予期しない 攻撃する,衝突する with their self-肩書を与えるd debut album, but fared 貧しく, 最初 at least, with its follow-up, Desperado, 解任するd as ‘a cowboy 記録,記録的な/記録する’ on account of its Western-style sleeve.

‘We didn’t want to be pigeonholed, so there was a lot of variation on the 早期に albums,’ says Henley. ‘We played bluegrass, country, 激しく揺する, blues and soul. It was an 有機の way of developing as we searched for a direction.’

If Joe Walsh’s 1976 arrival gave the Eagles a keener 激しく揺する ’n’ roll 辛勝する/優位, the wild-card guitarist’s 予測できない streak brought new problems. With friend Keith Moon, Walsh became known as the king of the hotel room-trash. Soon, the 禁止(する)d were 閉めだした from all the best 設立s.

Now 65, a clean and sober Walsh 収容する/認めるs his antics were fuelled by his insecurity around Frey and Henley ― superior talents in his 注目する,もくろむs ― although things took a darker turn after the 禁止(する)d’s 1980 分裂(する).

‘When we stopped, I was sad and didn’t know what to do,’ he says. ‘So I kept going. I became an アル中患者 and 扶養家族 on 麻薬s. I 攻撃する,衝突する 激しく揺する-底(に届く).’

It took the 禁止(する)d’s 1994 再会 to 納得させる Walsh that there was an 代案/選択肢 to oblivion. Schmit, also 65, explains: ‘He looked so bad. I think the 申し込む/申し出 to 再結合させる the 禁止(する)d saved him.’

Since then, the Eagles have 急に上がるd, and 奮起させるd by the 文書の (to be shown on BBC2 in June), they are gearing up for a two-year world 小旅行する.

‘As a 禁止(する)d, we had so many 問題/発行するs I’m surprised we ever wrote any songs,’ says Henley. ‘But, somehow, we got it done.’
