Savvy and stylish: Kate Nash, whose 選び出す/独身 Girl Talk is out now

The first time I met Kate Nash, she was a bundle of youthful energy: an endearing mix of knowing and naivete, who punctuated her chatter with exuberant bursts of laughter.

That was almost seven years ago, when the 十代の少年少女 from Harrow, North London, was on the brink of becoming one of the pop 直面するs of her 世代.

With her catchy choruses, retro-chic dresses and cheeky personality, she became a 星/主役にする at the same time as Adele, Lily Allen and Florence Welch.

Her 打開 選び出す/独身, 創立/基礎s, was a monstrous 攻撃する,衝突する; and Made Of Bricks, the album from which it was taken, topped the charts in 2007. The に引き続いて year, quirky Kate was 栄冠を与えるd Best British 女性(の) at the Brits. But, 反して Adele, Lily and Florence 達成するd 全世界の fame, Kate’s career nosedived.

Finding it hard to 対処する with success, she ‘went a bit crazy’, and developed an obsessive compulsive disorder. An 実験の second album flopped, thanks in part to one 跡をつける, Mansion Song, which degenerated into a shocking, foul-mouthed rant. And last year she was dropped by her 記録,記録的な/記録する label, Fiction.

But Nash is made of sterner stuff and now, at 26, she is 支援する with her third album, a new, all-女性(の) 支援 禁止(する)d and a 新たにするd hunger to rediscover success.

‘I look 支援する at the things I experienced at 19 and think: “血まみれの Hell! How did that happen?!”’ she tells me when we 会合,会う at her publicist’s office. If you consider she only started 令状ing songs when she became housebound after 落ちるing downstairs and breaking her foot, her incredulity is 理解できる.

‘The Brit Awards were exciting but I always felt people were trying to 土台を崩す me,’ she says. ‘I was young, I liked wearing vintage dresses, I loved my look ― but I wasn’t 存在 taken 本気で. But that period did give me the 壇・綱領・公約 to 開始する,打ち上げる a music career, so I’m 感謝する.

‘And, even though 存在 dropped (機の)カム as a shock, it has 証明するd a blessing. These things happen for a 推論する/理由, and I’ve since become a lot more savvy. The past 12 months have 許すd me to reshape my career.’

Nash’s new album, Girl Talk, is a 記録,記録的な/記録する made on her 条件. Out on her own label, Have 10p 記録,記録的な/記録するs, it was 記録,記録的な/記録するd in Los Angeles with Grammy-winning 生産者 Tom Biller, and 連合させるs 運動ing, West Coast 激しく揺する with 声の harmonies that 借りがある much to the girl groups of the Sixties.

Girl Talk is also Kate’s first 記録,記録的な/記録する with her new 禁止(する)d, 新採用するd from the 学院 Of 同時代の Music, a Guildford music college that counts 星/主役にするs Newton Faulkner, Ed Sheeran and Sugababe Amelle Berrabah の中で its alumni.

‘I want to encourage girls to start 禁止(する)d, so I’m 主要な by example,’ says Nash. ‘I played the Reading and 物陰/風下d Festivals over the bank holiday, and there were より小数の women on the 法案 this year. There’s a growing gender gap but I don’t want to moan about sexism ― I want to do something about it.’

With her music career getting 支援する on 跡をつける, Kate, who got a diploma in 演劇 at the BRIT School, is 注目する,もくろむing up other 壇・綱領・公約s, too. She will appear と一緒に Jaime Winstone and Sheridan Smith in the British comedy film 砕く Room, 予定 in cinemas at the end of November. It was, Nash says, a rewarding detour.

‘Making 砕く Room was such fun. You could tell that Ja ime and Sheridan have plenty of 事実上の/代理 experience, because they could adjust to a new scene so quickly.

‘But they are also wicked girls, and they were really welcoming. I didn’t want to get into movies just because I am a singer. I 手配中の,お尋ね者 it to be more 有機の. It also 証明するd to be an 利益/興味ing contrast with music, because I was part of somebody else’s 見通し. On 始める,決める, I couldn’t be a 支配(する)/統制する freak.’

Kate is also about to begin work with a Broadway choreographer on a 行う/開催する/段階 musical based around Girl Talk and 早期に songs such as 創立/基礎s and Mouthwash. Tying her songs to a story 始める,決める in Twenties Paris, she 乗る,着手するs on the 事業/計画(する) in New York later this year.

With her U.S. profile growing 速く ― she divides her time between LA and her London home ― she has also written a son g, I Am Me, for child 星/主役にする Willow Smith, the daughter of Hollywood 王族 Will Smith and his wife Jada.

‘I drove to their house and couldn’t やめる believe what was happening,’ Kate laughs. ‘It was weird! But the people around Willow were very 養育するing and loving. And she is the coolest 12-year-old you could hope to 会合,会う.

‘She has amazing style. She also wants to 令状 her own songs ― but I still had to pinch myself when Will Smith (機の)カム by. He walked past us, then said: “Bye baby girl!”

‘It’s 広大な/多数の/重要な fun to 令状 for other artists, but I’m not finished as a performer yet. I still want to 押し進める myself. I’d love to make a soul album or an electronic 記録,記録的な/記録する. There’s still plenty for me to do.’

Girl Talk is out now. The 選び出す/独身 Fri-End? is 解放(する)d on October 7. Kate’s UK 小旅行する starts on October 10 at the Waterfront, Norwich (myignorantyouth.com).
