Never throw anything out, Your Majesty, it might be 価値(がある) a 造幣局, 令状s CHRISTOPHER STEVENS?

Antiques Roadshow (BBC1): ****

The Real Noah's Ark (C4): ***

The trouble with Antiques Roadshow (BBC1) is that it’s too polite to 提起する/ポーズをとる the question we’re all dying to ask: ‘Madam, now that you know Granny’s heirloom is 価値のある enough to put a dent in the 国家の 負債, are you going to sell it?’

Everybody 断言するs they’ll never part with their treasure, that it’s the sentimental value that 事柄s, even if they 選ぶd it up last Saturday at a car boot sale.

What the show 欠如(する)s is a cheeky 告訴する Perkins type who will chivvy the honest answer out of people, and perhaps even 秘かに調査する on 地元の auction houses to see what lots turn up in the wake of a Roadshow visit.

Fiona Bruce, who can be a hard-nosed interviewer on BBC News, is too polite to ask people if they plan to sell the prized herilooms which are valued on the programme

Presenter Fiona Bruce can be a hard-nosed interviewer, of course, when she’s in Serious News 方式. But on the Beeb’s stately old 旗艦, she is never いっそう少なく than genteel.

Mind you, it was a little disappointing to 位置/汚点/見つけ出す her as a guest on Friday night’s Would I 嘘(をつく) To You?, joining in the joke as comedian Micky Flanagan 麻薬中毒の a 脚 over her shoulder and mimed a striptease. There’s only so far you should let your hair 負かす/撃墜する, Fiona.

She has tried to 満足させる our nosiness by introducing Antiques Roadshow 暴露するd, a segment where lucky folk who learned they were sitting on a small fortune in a previous episode return to 明らかにする/漏らす what happened next.

When a mother and daughter turned up last year with a 乱打するd wristwatch, they were 推定する/予想するing to hear it was 価値(がある) no more than 捨てる value, and were thrilled to discover from jewellery 専門家 John Benjamin that it was made by Cartier and might be 価値(がある) £5,000. Their 広大な/多数の/重要な uncle Bert had 選ぶd it up while working as a barman in a London club during the Thirties ― an aristocratic lush had 手渡すd it over to settle his booze tab.

They returned with the timepiece miraculously 回復するd. Dozens of craftsmen at Cartier’s 社債 Street workshop had 労働 ed to 修理 it to its 十分な glory ― and it was now 価値(がある) between 40 and 50 grand.

Good 職業 the family didn’t chuck it out, really.

Another splendid 投資 was the ワイン 瓶/封じ込める 選ぶd up for its unusual 形態/調整 in a bric-a-brac sale: it 時代遅れの from the Queen Anne 時代 and was valued at up to £3,000.

Not every story was so happy. One lady dug out a Victorian (犯罪の)一味 in a leather 事例/患者, the evening before the Roadshow, and placed it on her bed for a moment. While her 支援する was turned, her dog started chewing it.

The 星/主役にするs of the show were, reputedly, two of its greatest fans ― the Queen and Prince Philip. The episode was filmed at Hillsborough 城 in Northern Ireland, a 王室の 住居, and the show’s 専門家s ferreted through the 明言する/公表する rooms for pieces to please the 君主.

Her favourite was a lithe sculpture of a racehorse, 描写するing the 1863 Derby 勝利者, Macaroni. The 専門家s explained that this race was 著名な because there were 32 誤った starts. ‘Sounds very incompetent,’ murmured the Queen.

There was no valuation, of course. That would be crass. And Professor Irving Finkel, of the British Museum, didn’t talk about cash on The Real Noah’s Ark (C4) either, when a 訪問者 showed him the clay tablet his dad had 選ぶd up in an Iraqi marketplace in 1948.

The priceless briquette was inscribed with Babylonian heiroglyphs, telling the story of the 広大な/多数の/重要な Flood, with 指示/教授/教育s on how to build an Ark. And it was at least 1,000 years older than the Bible.

The professor is 抱擁する fun to watch. With his Father Christmas 耐えるd and white locks tied 支援する in a ponytail, he marches 一連の会議、交渉/完成する the 宗教上の Land in a pair of neatly 圧力(をかける)d Austin Reed trousers, a jacket that doesn’t match, and no tie. You could 位置/汚点/見つけ出す him as a British archaeologist from ten miles off.

It’s a pity the 文書の was rather disjointed, with a team of boatbuilders 建設するing an Ark that looked like a gigantic tractor tyre, and then sailing away without any animals.

But both these shows were 完全に 安心させるing to an inveterate hoarder like me. Broken watches, ワイン 瓶/封じ込めるs, lumps of brick... never throw anything out.

Movie goddess of the 週末: Lauren Bacall 記録,記録的な/記録するd her final 業績/成果 for Family Guy (BBC3), as a randy ol d lady who 減少(する)s dead while trying to 誘惑する the irreverent 風刺漫画’s main character, Peter, into an 事件/事情/状勢. Wonderful to know that ‘Betty’ Bacall never lost her wicked sense of humour.
