Shameless scoops TV awards - shame about EastEnders

The man behind the Channel 4 演劇 Shameless was today celebrating after stealing the show at the 王室の Television Society Awards.

Paul Abbott, who 工夫するd the 演劇, walked away with a hat-trick of awards for best 演劇 series, best writer and the 裁判官s' award for 優れた出資／貢献 to TV 演劇 over two １０年間s.

At last night's 儀式 in London, the man whose career has 含むd working on 攻撃する，衝突するs like Cracker, 明言する／公表する of Play and Clocking Off, and who started out on 載冠（式）／即位（式） Street 21 years ago, said that the 裁判官s' award had left him "絶対 speechless".

The night was a good one for the BBC, which walked away with 11 awards followed by Channel 4 with nine, ITV with six and channel 5 with one for best children's programme.

But its 旗艦 soap EastEnders lost out to 載冠（式）／即位（式） Street in the best soap 部類.

The BBC's ballroom dancing show 厳密に Come Dancing took best entertainment over Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway (ITV) and Derren Brown's Tricks Of The Mind (Channel 4).

'Masterful presenters'

But Ant and Dec were given the award for best entertainment 業績／成果 for Saturday Night Take Away over Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and Derren Brown's Seance.

The 裁判官s said: "They were 簡単に masterful at 現在のing a hugely 複雑にするd live show with 巨大な likeability and 技術 while making it look effortless and 広大な／多数の／重要な fun to watch".

Dec joked afterwards: "It's not surprising that we （警官の）巡回区域，受持ち区域 Jonathan Ross. He needs a haircut and he needs to get himself a decent 控訴."

"This means a lot to us. It keeps us on our toes."

Peter Kay's Channel Four show Max and 米，稲 and Little Britain's Max Lucas and Matt Walliams, who last year won a stream of awards, lost out to the いっそう少なく井戸／弁護士席 known Tamsin Greig for the Green Wing for the best comedy award 業績／成果.

裁判官s 賞賛するd Greig for "the way she 住むs the character 完全に".

Abbott was awarded best writer for Shameless over Jed Mercurio for 団体／死体s (BBC 3) and Guy Hibbert and Paul Greengrass for Omagh (Channel 4).

Shameless, 述べるd by 裁判官s as "exciting, intelligent, mucky, poignant, raw, amusing, 伴う／関わるing and always entertaining", scooped best 演劇 series over 団体／死体s and Life Begins (ITV).

After receiving his 裁判官s' award, Abbott said: "I'm just 絶対 speechless".

Shameless, he said, was not about "表明するing personal stuff, but about putting people on TV that I'd never seen, but I knew 存在するd, but were never seen there (on TV)".

He 追加するd: "It's the 肉親，親類d of thing where you give an embarrassed speech, but I really 港／避難所't got one. I'm just so proud."

He said that he had tried to 令状 the acclaimed 演劇 ten years ago but that it was a "maudlin mess".

BBC success

The BBC's other 勝利，勝つs 含むd Catherine Tate for the Catherine Tate Show (BBC2) for best on-審査する網状組織 newcomer, best presenter for Michael Palin for Himalaya, and best 文書の series, The 力／強力にする of Nightmares (BBC2).

BBC3's Nighty Night won two awards, for best 状況／情勢 comedy and for best comedy writer for Julia Davis.

Anamaria Marinca won best 女性（の） actor for Sex Traffic on Channel 4 and the programme also won best 演劇 serial.

When 載冠（式）／即位（式） Street wreaked more 悲惨 on EastEnders by winning best soap, 裁判官s 賞賛するd the ITV show for "the cast's impeccable 業績／成果s and the effortless gear changes with the juxtaposition of the storylines".

Paul O'Grady, whose 競争相手s Richard and Judy were not even on the shortlist, had brought a "breath of fresh 空気／公表する in the daytime schedule" and O'Grady was "undoubtedly the 推論する／理由 for its 抱擁する success" 裁判官s said.

O'Grady said afterwards: "I'm in shock. I've got no axe to grind against Richard and Judy but they can say what they like about me. They're the bosses."

The awards were hosted by Kate Thornton in the Grosvenor House Hotel in central London.
