In The （刑事）被告 on Channel Five, Kenzey, 22, 直面するd 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金s of failing to 保護する her seven-week-old baby. Her child 苦しむd a fractured skull and was left brain-損失d and blind

The （刑事）被告

率ing:

Judgment. It’s a dirty word for an entire 世代. Social マスコミ （犯罪の）一味s with the words: ‘You ain’t got no 権利 to 裁判官 me!’

Twenty-two-year-old Kenzey said it 繰り返して in The （刑事）被告 (C5). The young mother was aggrieved beyond all endurance that 完全にする strangers thought they had the 権利 to 裁判官 her.

Kenzey’s slight diffic ulty was that these ‘完全にする strangers’ were a 栄冠を与える 法廷，裁判所 陪審／陪審員団, and she was 直面するing serious 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金s of failing to 保護する her own seven-week-old baby.

The 幼児 苦しむd a fractured skull and was left brain-損失d and blind, 明らかに from 存在 shaken vigorously.?

Both Kenzey and her boyfriend, Kyle, professed total ignorance of how the 傷害s were （打撃，刑罰などを）与えるd.

Cameras 観察するd Kenzey (whose last 指名する was withheld for 合法的な 推論する／理由s) minutely during the months 主要な up to the 裁判，公判. The （映画の）フィート数 gave us an 前例のない 適切な時期 to 裁判官 for ourselves.

Not that she ever 受託するd that anyone had any 権利 to form an opinion. Resplendent in Fifties retro fashions, wearing more make-up than Cleopatra, Kenzey considered herself above 批評.

When she heard her 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金, she was foul-mouthed and indignant: ‘I’m not f****** having that!’ She 辞退するd to 収容する／認める that police, doctors or social 労働者s had anything valid to say. ‘The only person who can make a judgment here,’ she 主張するd, pointing skywards, ‘is God.’

And when her 裁判，公判 finally began and the 起訴 started to 輪郭（を描く） its 事例／患者, she stood up and tried to shout the barrister 負かす／撃墜する ― until the 裁判官 警告するd that one more 爆発 would see her thrown straight into a 独房.

This was a sad, sordid 事例／患者. Social services had been called to the couple’s flat すぐに after the baby was born, because Kenzey called the police and （人命などを）奪う，主張するd Kyle had slapped her. She later 否定するd her boyfriend was 肉体的に abusive, and the social 労働者s decided the 23-year-old father 提起する／ポーズをとるd no 脅し to the child ― a strong point in Kenzey’s defence.

The fascination in this programme was not 単に experiencing a serious 犯罪の 事例／患者 first-手渡す, through the 安全な filter of TV.

It was in trying to decode the real facts from watching an 情熱的な, いつかs articulate young woman who was, we 徐々に realised, in 完全にする 否定. She knew her baby had 苦しむd appalling 傷害s, and that if she had not （打撃，刑罰などを）与えるd them then her partner must have done.

The 陪審／陪審員団 設立する her 有罪の and she was 宣告，判決d to three-an d-a-half years in 刑務所，拘置所. Her boyfriend Kyle was 刑務所，拘置所d for 18 years for grievous bodily 害（を与える）

But she could not 受託する it. She became furiously 防御の when anyone 示唆するd he was violent. And even when Kyle published an unprompted 自白 on Facebook, branding himself a ‘child abuser’, Kenzey would not believe it. By then, incredibly, she had already had another baby with him ― a girl who was taken straight into care.

By Kenzey’s logic, if she 辞退するd to 裁判官 her boyfriend, then nobody else should 推定する to 裁判官 her. Slowly we began to see her as a clever manipulator with a short fuse. The 陪審／陪審員団 certainly did, and 設立する her 有罪の. She was 宣告，判決d to three-and-a-half years in 刑務所，拘置所. Kyle got 18 years for GBH.

The beauty of this one-off 文書の was that it enabled us to form our own judgment before the 判決 was 明らかにする／漏らすd. The 失望／欲求不満 was that so much 詳細（に述べる） had to be condensed to fit it into a 90-minute episode.

Apple Tree Yard

Apple Tree Yard (BBC1) also built to a 法廷，裁判所 事例／患者, though it was drawn out to an excruciating degree. The long silences, the repetitions, the dreary, self-pitying voiceover... and just when you thought it couldn’t become any more of a slog, there were moments of slow 動議.

The big 新たな展開 in the final scene was that scientist Yvonne (Emily Watson) had 現実に told her lover Costley (Ben Chaplin) to kill the man who 強姦d her ― but she hadn’t meant it really. It wasn’t 殺人, just a miscommunication, so that’s all 権利 then.

A pple Tree Yard was 深く，強烈に pretentious and painfully slow, but worst of all were its characters. It was impossible to like anything about any of them. And so ― 有罪の, not 有罪の, grey area in between... I just couldn’t care.
