What's Cooking? (Cert 12)

by LYNNE TRUSS, Daily Mail

British film-製造者 Gurinder Chadha's belated follow-up to Bhaji On The Beach is a 熟達した comic 演劇 of four Los Angeles families - Latino, Vietnamese, African-American and ユダヤ人の - celebrating Thanksgiving. The 肩書を与える 言及するs not only to the monstrous turkeys in 準備 but also to the family 問題/発行するs seething under the many の近くにd lids.

What's Cooking? is a small 奇蹟. Rather like those rich, コンビナート/複合体 meals that are somehow all ready on time and come hot to the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, this is a 抱擁する film ーに関して/ーの点でs of 範囲 and ambition (41 speaking parts), yet it is kept beautifully under 支配(する)/統制する.

How will Elizabeth (Mercedes Ruehl) introduce her new boyfriend to her large, 熱烈な family, now her estranged husband has turned up? 'Hi,' she 迎える/歓迎するs him.

'Feeling strong? Good.' How can Trinh (Joan Chen) keep her teenage children 安全な? Will Rachel (Kyra Sedgwick) ever get her parents to 受託する she is a lesbian?

Under all the humour, Chadha makes a 強烈な and 楽観的な point about the inclusiveness of American 身元. After all, this is a Los Angeles you rarely see in movies: 郊外の American families with children called Jimmy and Jenny - who just happen not to be white, Anglo-Saxon or Protestant. The food looks gorgeous, by the way.
