Castaways return to the wild
During his year as one of TV's Castaways on a remote Hebridean island, former butcher Colin Corrigan dreamed 絶えず of 沈むing his teeth into a Big Mac.
But on his return to the 本土/大陸 with his wife and daughter, he 設立する he could not even 直面する crossing the threshold of a (人が)群がるd burger restaurant.
Ever since leaving Taransay at the end of last year, the Corrigans have felt stifled in their home town of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
So stifled, in fact, that they have sold up and moved to remote 中央の-むちの跡s. They have bought a 300-year-old cottage in the wilds of Carmarthenshire to try to recreate the sense of freedom they felt in the Hebrides.
Mr Corrigan, 47, his wife Julia, 42, and nine-year-old Natasha 計画(する) to support themselves by selling homegrown vegetables and chickens.
They say it was their welcome home party, after a year on the island, which made them decide they could no longer がまんする living の中で (人が)群がるs of people in a town.
Mrs Corrigan, a former English teacher, said she suddenly felt breathless as the music blared, the ビデオ 審査するs flickered and the disco lights flashed. 'I saw my husband in a corner with his 長,率いる in his 手渡すs,' she said. 'We just 手配中の,お尋ね者 to get 支援する to our beloved island where we were 安全な, sound and happy.'
She said they 設立する on their return that they were more worried by everyday 都市の events - 押し込み強盗s, 衝突,墜落s and other stressful 出来事/事件s which modern city folk take in their stride. And they 設立する themselves more 関心d for their daughter's 福利事業.
'At first I thought the feeling was just a passing 段階 and we would get over it. But we didn't - we craved the simple 存在 we had left behind and we longed to 再度捕まえる it.'
They have been helped by other former Castaways - 含むing TV presenter Ben Fogle, who helped them scythe 負かす/撃墜する the long grass around the cottage.
Dublin ソフトウェア 顧問 Padraig Nallen also arrived and helped them chop firewood.
'We have created our very own piece of Taransay but this time in むちの跡s,' said Mr Corrigan, who worked as the slaughterman for his fellow islanders. He said money would be tight - they received only £4,000 from the BBC for taking part in Castaway.
'But we are happy again.' he said. His wife 追加するd: 'We have come to realise the value of money - and it's not much.
'The last few months 支援する in いわゆる civilisation have made us realise what are the important things in life.'
Mr Corrigan also 明らかにする/漏らすd that his homecoming to Cheltenham had been marred by one of the 天罰(を下す)s of modern city life - wheel clampers. They struck the day after he had bought a car to 取って代わる the one he sold before leaving for Taransay.
'It was so dark I didn't realise that the 後部 end of the car was overhanging the 隣人's 境界 by a few インチs,' he 解任するd.
He 設立する the H-登録(する)d Ford Granada clamped when he got up the に引き続いて morning - and had to 支払う/賃金 £50 to have the wheel lock 除去するd and £7 on a taxi to get Natasha to school.
Castaway 2000 saw 28 adults and eight children travelling to Taransay to fend for themselves for a year while a BBC1 飛行機で行く-on-the-塀で囲む 文書の team charted their 進歩.
All the volunteers received 必須の 供給(する)s, 含むing eggs, milk and meat from the 本土/大陸, until they were able to 供給する for themselves.
They were also given a year's 供給(する) of 洗面所 paper along with livestock and seeds to 工場/植物 vegetables and fruit.
The group relied on 代案/選択肢 力/強力にする sources, 含むing a windmill and a 水力電気 turbine 力/強力にするd from the nearby loch.
