While the 残り/休憩(する) of Britain is bellowing the 半端物s about Meghan, Brexit and everything else (含むing the owner of that amazing 発言する/表明する inside the bee 衣装 on The Masked Singer), Louis Theroux has perfected the art of 存在 非,不,無-committal.

He doesn’t 申し込む/申し出 opinions. He barely asks questions. He just 星/主役にするs, 長,率いる わずかに drooped and gaze わずかに sideways, never breaking 注目する,もくろむ 接触する ― like a spaniel waiting to be fed.

The technique 作品 best when his interviewees want to be liked. The longer he stays silent, the more they give him.

Selling Sex (BBC2), an 調査 into the growing number of women who work from home as 売春婦s, was a masterclass in silent 尋問.

Each of the three women Louis met needed little 誘発するing to talk about why they chose to go to bed with strangers for money. All had 用意が出来ている answers that sounded 納得させるing enough at first.

Victoria, 33, was a 選び出す/独身 mum with four children to 料金d. As a sex 労働者, she could earn £250 an hour and still do the school run.

Caroline, 63, did it to spice up her marriage, with the 激励 of her husband. Ashley, a 23-year-old student, had a high sex 運動 and was fed up with dating.

If Louis had challenged them with 調査(する)ing, judgmental questions, the women might have stuck obstinately to their stories. But he said nothing. いつかs he nodded or compressed his lips, as though trying to understand.

He never looked 感情を害する/違反するd. He didn’t 反応する to the women’s nervous jokes. Most importantly, he never 表明するd his 是認 of anything . . . though he 絶えず seemed on the 瀬戸際 of giving it.

Trying to 説得する a smile out of him, the women kept 申し込む/申し出ing (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) ― 試験的に at first, then in 激流s. Ashley talked so compulsively and emotionally that I began to be afraid for her health. ‘I’m so desperate for people to 認める my 存在,’ she said, in 涙/ほころびs.

All three had 苦しむd horrible, abusive childhoods, something they might have 否定するd or 解任するd until Louis gave them the impetus to start talking.

Fireproof fabric of the 週末?

While a car lot 炎d on Vera (ITV), Brenda Blethyn went pottering between 燃やすing 乗り物s in search of 手がかり(を与える)s. The 炎上s didn’t bother her. What’s that mac made of, asbestos?

In his 最近の 文書のs from America, Louis chatted more, いつかs making weak jokes, to 勝利,勝つ the 受託 of his 支配するs. That may be why his 最近の shows have been いっそう少なく 効果的な than this at digging into the truth. But the disadvantage is that tangental 問題/発行するs don’t get 演説(する)/住所d.

I would have liked to know whether organised 罪,犯罪 plays a part in this 明らかに DIY 売春: do the women have to 支払う/賃金 保護 money, for instance? Does Caroline’s husband of 44 years, Graham the 借り切る/憲章d accountant, ever worry police might 告発する/非難する him of living off immoral 収入s?

But if Louis had started asking questions like that, we might not have got to the deeper answers.

The questions 流出/こぼすing over from the first episode of Deadwater Fell (C4) were too many to count. Most of all, I want to know how David Tennant is able to make me 不信 his character 深く,強烈に, when everything he says seems so 穏やかな and straightforward.

Is it because he pauses just a fraction too long before speaking . . . a hint that every anodyne 発言/述べる is carefully calculated?

Tennant plays a doctor in a Scottish village whose wife and three daughters are killed in a house 解雇する/砲火/射撃. All the 団体/死体s appear to have been drugged ― and the girls were locked in their room.

Surely our first impressions won’t be 権利? It can’t be that simple. But it will take more than the silent 治療 to get this creepy doctor talking.
