季節風 Wedding (Cert 15)

by JASON SOLOMONS, Mail on Sunday

After the hangover comes the 選ぶ-me-up. Mira Nair's 季節風 Wedding will (疑いを)晴らす the 長,率いる, and get the heart tingling for life and cinema again.

始める,決める during the three-day festivities of a 井戸/弁護士席-to-do Delhi family wedding, the film is a 感覚的な delight that 入り口s the テレビ視聴者 with colours and fragrance.

Nair, director of Salaam Bombay! and Mississippi Masala and 勝利者 of the Lion d'Or at Venice last year, brings the whole of modern India together: grandmothers 固執するing to tradition; parents with one 注目する,もくろむ on their brood, the other on their social standing; daughters for and against arranged marriages, striking out for careers, having dangerous sex but dreaming of romance; actors, doctors, golfers, beggars, servants, 建設業者s, children, kitchen and garden staff.

This is an India on the move - TV studios, 動きやすい phones, e-mails and quick 取引,協定s. But it's also a culture redolent of 遺産: 儀式s, 祈りs, morality, warmth of spirit.

Nair pulls off an admirable feat of directorial juggling, the sort of thing only Robert Altman at his best can manage - see his 来たるべき Gosford Park.

But Nair has a more emotional and sensual camera that 一打/打撃s the atmosphere, the 肌, the hair, feeling the 湿度 and cloudbursts, tasting the food, smelling the marigold 花冠s, stepping lightly to the (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域s of a wonderful soundtrack.

If the 残り/休憩(する) of the cinema year continues like this, it will be a happy one.
