What would happen if the 宣言 of Independence 可決する・採択するd by the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs wasn't the 見解/翻訳/版 written by Thomas Jefferson? pictured.

It's a long time since I cast an 注目する,もくろむ over the U.S. 宣言 of Independence. But one thing I hadn’t 高く評価する/(相場などが)上がるd until seeing this fascinating new play by Timberlake Wertenbaker is that the 見解/翻訳/版 of the 宣言 written by Thomas Jefferson wasn’t the one 可決する・採択するd by the 政治家,政治屋s.

The differences are small but 重要な and Wertenbaker uses them to give the 設立するing fathers a 徹底的な workout in a play that’s as 熱烈な as it is big-hearted.

She also paints a panoramic social landscape, に引き続いて a young Quaker man who leaves his devoutly 平和主義者 family to fight for freedom ― 落ちるing in love with a slave girl on the way.

The play is certainly no fairy tale. The struggle was a squalid 商売/仕事 of 有罪の 妥協 and, even when it was won, it meant freedom for white folks only. Jefferson, a 長年の 対抗者 of slavery, kept his slaves on because he’d 投資するd so much money in them.

William Hope’s Jefferson is a serious, genial man with insouciant 二塁打 基準s, while David Burnett has a 抱擁する, Liam Neeson-esque 行う/開催する/段階 presence as the 主要な man driven by love and ideals. And Mimi Ndiweni is strong but sorrowful as the slave girl history betrays.?
