Brumbies cull backflip a '災害': prof

Letting thousands of brumbies roam wild through the 雪の降る,雪の多い Mountains and abandoning 計画(する)s for controlled culling is "madness" and "災害" for the nation's natural 遺産, says a 主要な professor.

副 NSW 首相 John Barilaro has backflipped on the 明言する/公表する 政府's 提案するd culling 計画(する) in Kosciuszko 国家の Park, 特記する/引用するing the cultural significance of the brumby.

"Wild brumbies have been roaming the Australian アルプス山脈 for almost 200 years and are part of the cultural fabric and folklore of the high country," he said in a 声明 on Sunday.

主要な scientists from around Australia have long supported 計画(する)s to cull the brumby 全住民 from 6000 to 600 over 20 years, arguing it's needed to 保護する the delicate Alpine 環境.

Professor Don Driscoll, from Deakin University, says Sunday's 決定/判定勝ち(する) will 影響する/感情 natural 種類, natural fauna and water 供給(する), which could also 影響する/感情 the 雪の降る,雪の多い 2.0 計画/陰謀.

"It's a 災害 to our 国家の 遺産," he said.

"(It's) a 非難する in the 直面する for wild horses, it's a 非難する in the 直面する to the people who care about Australia's natural 遺産 and a 非難する in the 直面する for the 明言する/公表する's 脅すd 種類."

Prof Driscoll 警告するd it could even do the horses more 害(を与える) than good.

"It's also cruel to thousands of horses because of the 増大するing 全住民 that will 餓死する to death 予定 to the 拒絶する/低下する in food 資源s," he told AAP.

"Kosciuszko 国家の park not only 含む/封じ込めるs the nation's highest mountain but rare animal and fauna 種類 that 発展させるd in the 地域 over tens of thousands of years."

For Mr Barilaro to sacrifice those things for feral horses introduced in 1820 is "madness", he 追加するd.

Prof Driscoll is part of a group of 41 scientists from 16 universities who wrote to former NSW 首相 マイク Baird in 2016 説 the only way to save the unique ecosystem was to cull 90 per cent of the brumby 全住民.

Brumbies in Kosciuszko have degraded 48 per cent of the 国家の park.

The brumby 全住民 増加するd from 4200 in 2009 to 6000, にもかかわらず 450 存在 除去するd each year, Prof Driscroll said.

But Mr Barilaro said that if the brumby 全住民 climbed too high in 高度に-極度の慎重さを要する alpine areas then 資源s would be 配分するd に向かって their 移転 and re-homing.

"Kosciuszko 国家の Park 存在するs to 保護する the unique 環境 of the 雪の降る,雪の多い Mountains, and that unique 環境 含むs wild brumbies," he said.

環境 大臣 Gabriell Upton is 推定する/予想するd to introduce a いわゆる "Brumbies 法案" to 議会 next week 禁じるing lethal culling of the animal.
